Today he wants to go snorkeling in the ocean. Snorkeling is a way to swim in the ocean and see the plants and animals underwater. Simon will wear a mask over his eyes. Simon will use a tube to help him breathe underwater. 2 Simon stays with a guide who will help him learn to snorkel. Simon is ready to jump into the ocean. He hopes to learn about the ways that plants and animals in the ocean need each other. 3 Simon sees algae and seaweed in the ocean. These are plants that need sunlight so they can turn it into food. Algae and seaweed grow in shallow water so they can get energy from the Sun. 4 Simon sees a shrimp swimming around rocks and coral. The shrimp is eating algae. The shrimp eats the algae and turns it into energy. This helps the shrimp grow and swim. The shrimp eats the algae growing on the rocks and coral. There goes the shrimp. It is gone. Where did it go? 5 Simon turns his head and sees a butterfly fish. It is looking for the shrimp to eat. That must be why the shrimp disappeared. The butterfly fish will eat the shrimp and turn it into energy. This helps the butterfly fish grow and swim. Suddenly, the butterfly fish disappears too. Where did it go? 6 Simon sees a dolphin. Why did the butterfly fish go away when the dolphin came? The snorkeling guide tells Simon that dolphins eat butterfly fish. The dolphins will eat the butterfly fish to get energy. This helps the dolphins grow and swim. Now Simon understands. The butterfly fish disappeared so the dolphin wouldn’t eat it! 7 Simon has enjoyed his snorkeling adventure.
