B18 — THE MUSKOKA SUN: Thursday, May 15, 2008 Lake Jo Centre needs your help May 30 By Amy Johnston F ood? Check. The outdoors? Check. A worthy cause? Double-check! If any of the above criteria interests you, come on out to the Lake Joseph Centre with friends and family on May 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for a fun and fulfilling day of volunteering. The centre is looking for willing members of the community to help out and ready the camp for its summer season and its hundreds of campers. The CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) Lake Joseph Centre is a recreational and rehabilitation facility that offers a specialized camping experience for people of all ages with vision loss. It’s a chance to develop new skills, learn new activities and make new friends. Activities include canoeing, water-skiing, sailing The Rock Golf Club reopens Refinements enhance playability, conditions and aesthetics throughout the course T he Rock Golf Club, a Marriott golf-managed property and part of the Red Leaves Resort complex, will officially reopen its award-winning 18-hole Nick Faldo design on Thursday, May 22, after undergoing a series of refinements. Highlighting the refinement project was the strategic redesign of six holes to feature modified approach shot views and increased landing areas, while eliminating certain blind shots and sloped landing areas. Additional renovations included the expansion of tee areas and widening of fairway landing zones, all designed to increase visibility, maximize playability and improve shot-making opportunities, while still maintaining the integrity of the Rock’s original, chal- lenging layout. The overall project included alterations to a total of 14 holes, the removal of 16,480 square feet of surface rock, and the reconstruction of all greenside bunkers. “Refinements made to the Rock will enhance the overall playing experience for golfers of all skill levels,” said Greg Downer, the Rock’s director of golf. “We have been eagerly awaiting the completion of this project and I am confident that the enhancements will offer a challenging and fair test of golf, further establishing the Rock’s reputation as one of the most spectacular courses in Canada.” Originally opened in 2004 and sculpted out of breathtaking pine forests and stunning granite cliffs on the shores of Lake Rosseau, the Rock has been revered for both the challenge it provided to golfers, as well as its allaround natural beauty. Red Leaves Resort will follow the reopening of the Rock with the grand opening of the Rosseau, a JW Marriott Resort and Spa, Silver Stream Farms F A M I L Y R U N S I N C E 1 9 2 3 which is slated to occur in late summer. Visitors to the 221-room resort, the first-ever JW Marriott Resort Hotel in Canada, will enjoy additional worldclass amenities including a spa, marina, a 700-acre nature reserve, and much more. and kayaking, along with more traditional camp activities such as marshmallow roasting and arts and crafts. Jennifer Baggetta, an associate member of the camp, says the tasks for May 30 will include raking, painting, moving beds and furniture, cleaning the waterfront and an overall organization of some areas. All you need to bring is a smile and a readiness to work. The day begins bright and early with volunteers gathering in the dining hall of the Lake Joseph Centre for a morning meeting to outline the day’s schedule and to assign the tasks. It is recommended that people come prepared for all types of weather, rain or shine, as most of the work will be outdoors. Break out the overalls and shirts used for painting because clothes that can get dirty are a must. This day is a chance for people to learn about the centre, get involved in their community and help out a worthy cause. Food and coffee will be provided, but no dogs are allowed. The camp also requires volunteers who want to help for the remainder of the summer in whatever capacity they can. As Baggetta says, “We love our volunteers!” The weekend of June 7 and 8 is of particular importance as the camp is hosting the national board meeting on the Monday. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and facilitate the meeting. Anyone interested can contact Baggetta for more information. The Lake Joseph Centre has been operating from its location in Muskoka since the summer of 1961 and relies on the generosity of volunteers. Continued community support is crucial. Jen Batchelor, a Lake Jo staff member, describes the purpose of the camp perfectly: “Camp has made me realize that there is so much someone can do to help someone else, even though sometimes it feels like something small.” So if you’re tired of sitting around and want to get outdoors and experience the beauty of Muskoka while helping others, clear your calendar on Saturday, May 30 and come out to the Lake Joseph Centre. They’ll be sure to thank you with a smile of their own.
