WINTER 2016 NO. 23 Sometimes It Takes A Village Sometimes it takes a village to rescue an animal. That was the case on a gloomy Saturday afternoon when we received a phone call from a Good Samaritan who had found a kitten in her garage who appeared to be only a few days old. After an exhaustive search, neither the mother nor any other kittens were found. The needs of this newborn were critical and the caller could not provide the care it needed. Jan, our Shelter Manager and quick response “team”, immediately set out to bring the kitten back to Second Chance. The weather was cold, and this little one needed warmth. She wrapped the wee kitten inside her jacket to keep her warm until she arrived back at the shelter. Every little life matters, and we were concerned about how we were going to tend to the immediate needs of this little gray ball of fur. Our foster parents at that moment had more kittens then they could handle, and the shelter was at capacity. We needed another foster home, one experienced in neo-natal care. Little did we know our prayers were about to be answered when the doorbell rang. In walked three of our supporters to “just look around”. Jeanne, one of the visitors, had recently made the difficult decision to relieve her 17 year old magnificent yellow Maine Coon, Fizzer, of his pain and suffering. With Fizzer gone, she felt that Harry, the remaining Maine Coon, needed a new companion, and Jeanne needed another kitty to fill the animal silence she was feeling. It was love at first sight. Jeanne agreed to take the as yet unnamed little one home, along with all the accoutr ements a new baby needs…..bottles, formula, receiving blankets, a tiny pink carrier lined with a pet heating pad, and lots of moral support. Jeanne went home prepared to do whatever was needed to keep the kitten alive. We have called her often, and she mentions she remembers what it was like to be a new mom and get very little sleep with feedings every four hours. She named the female kitten Gelfling after a character in the movie The Dark Crystal. The kitten’s new grandmother made fleece pouches on a cord to hang around Jeanne’s neck so Gelfling could go everywhere her mother went. This included board meetings, seminars, and all the day to day duties required in her new position as a “working kitten”. This heartwarming story doesn’t end here. Jeanne has decided she can not part with the irresistible kitten who makes her cry tears of joy and her heart swell……they are bonded for life. This is just one example of why Second Chance exists and why we need your help. We continue to volunteer to cuddle frightened animals who don’t understand why the home they lived in just went away or why the family that loved them can’t keep them anymore. We carefully tend the feral cats who have never known human touch, the traumatized, the abused, the ill and the forgotten. As another cold winter sets in, we are ready to care for the cats “out there” in our villages. We hope that with your help, we can continue our mission to demonstrate in deeds, not just words, that all lives matter. ~Sally Syren & Jackie Allison Gelfling thriving at 4 weeks old The Scoop Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinics 1517 Meadow Street Littleton, NH 03561 603-259-3244 www.secondchancear.org email: [email protected] www.facebook.com/secondchancear www.twitter.com/SCARLittletonNH www.instagram.com/secondchancear Call us at 603-259-3244 to schedule your cat or dog Dec. 19, Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 6, March 27, April 17, May 15 2017 Low Cost Shot Clinics Saturday, April 22 Lisbon Town Hall, 10am-noon & Bethlehem Fire Department, 1:30-3:30pm Saturday, April 29 Second Chance, 1:30-3:30pm Saturday, October 7 Second Chance, 1:30-3:30pm ShoeBox Recycling SHELTER HOURS Monday through Saturday Noon to 3pm or by appointment Drop off your unwanted shoes We raise $20 for every 40 lbs we collect! Homer’s Homilies Dear Friends: Is your cat getting in the Christmas Spirit? Well, I am! Christmas trees will be going up in homes around the North Country soon which means that the humble house cat's favorite time of year has begun. All of us shelter cats have been texting and tweeting about the impending joyous season and checking our lists at least twice. Let me help reduce your gift shopping stress level by sharing with you our list of things cats really want for Christmas. Number one is a nice warm and snuggly place to nap, with room for a friend. Ranking right up there is a good place to hide (especially when you are calling me), and something to sit on - the taller the better, please! The long dark days of winter do get boring, so maybe a shelf full of plants and knick-knacks to prance over would liven things up a bit. And who doesn't enjoy some yummy treats? Most importantly, we all want someone who loves and spends time with us. As for me, the only thing I want this year is cardboard boxes. Seriously, boxes. You might think I'm crazy, but a good, only-open-on-one-end box can be anything I want it to be. I can't wait for Christmas! Love, Homer Page 2 Jameson’s Third Chance Jameson’s story begins in a “drug house.” It takes little imagination to picture what life was like for him in this situation. But happily for Jameson, a kind young couple learned of his plight and took him home to live with them, where he became a beloved part of their little family. The young lady of the couple had been on dialysis for some time and was waiting for a kidney transplant. At last a match was found for her, and this past spring surgery was successfully performed. Her immune system became compromised due to the anti-rejection medication she had to take. Her doctor advised the couple to find a new home for Jameson to avoid any chance of scratches, infections, or the like. With heavy hearts they reluctantly brought him to the shelter in June. Jameson, a handsome black and white domestic short hair, is a little over two years old. He’s adjusted well here even though he has had no experience with other cats. He’s okay with kids but timid around dogs. We feel he would thrive in a quiet home. This sweet boy deserves a Third Chance for a safe and happy life. Please come by the shelter and meet Jameson. Once you do, we’re pretty sure you’ll be ready to welcome this quiet, brave survivor into your family! Cat Tails: Tessa "Thank you again for all that you do for cats and for helping them find their forever homes. Tessa is my once-in-a-lifetime cat and I just absolutely adore my little companion. I can't imagine life without her and I can't thank you enough for saving her and bringing her into my life! Laura J." Follow Tessa's adventures at www.facebook.com/tessathecat Life In Many Colors From Pablo Picasso to Frida Kahlo to Salvador Dali, there appears to be a historic friendship between cats and artists. Peggy Moore is no exception. Peggy grew up in New York City and was interested in art from an early age. After high school she traveled extensively, then graduated from Rice University in Texas where she studied architecture and art. In the mid-nineties, she moved to the North Country from Martha’s Vineyard. Peggy and her first cat Joy lived happily together for 20 years. When Joy passed away, Peggy missed having a cat in her life, and so filled out an application at Second Chance. Under requests she wrote “male, orange, healthy, young, and friendly”. At Peggy’s first visit, Sandy (formerly Clancy) walked right up to her and since he fit her description of the perfect cat to a T, he found his forever home. Her decision was also influenced by a volunteer who said “this one just needs to be loved”. Peggy tells us that Sandy has a grateful heart and a great sense of humor; and that her second time around loving a cat has proven to be as much of a miracle as the first time. Peggy is a gifted artist whose preferred medium is acrylics. She has created four quirky and abstract cat portraits that have been made into greeting cards. They are for sale at Little City Thrift Store in Littleton (down behind the bookstore) and all profits go to Second Chance. During February of 2017 Peggy will display her art in an exhibit at Ammonoosuc Community Health Services in Littleton. In lieu of charging for her work, she will ask that a donation be made to Second Chance. We feel very lucky that this talented woman found Second Chance and adopted Sandy, and continues to find, through her art and generous heart, a way to contribute to the welfare of our beloved shelter cats. Thank you, Peggy! Cat Tails: Rusty Cat Tails: Peppersass & Jefferson “Just wanted you to know that Peppersass (formerly Pepper) and Jefferson (formerly UConn) have settled in beautifully! They purr constantly and preen against us. They even met our two Cardigan Welsh Corgis and after a snout-smacking for Lucy, everyone now knows their place. Thank you! We love them! Allison & Guy G.” Volunteers at the shelter called these two “The Butterball Twins”. Allison now calls them “The White Mountains”! Winter 2016 “Rusty, formerly Monterey Jack, has been a wonderful addition to our family! Healthy and happy, he is incredibly playful, yet so gentle and loving! We are so happy, lucky, and blessed to have found such a treasure! Thank you Second Chance for all you do! Alison G.” Cat Tails: Tanzey “Here is a picture for you of our baby. She is doing great and everyone here loves her. I am sure she is happy and content. Thank you for bringing her into our lives.
