Family Fun Day! - Guilderland Public Library

GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
Volume 16 Issue 5
It’s ‘Tweet’!
Here’s a really cool way to find
out what’s going on at the Library:
We’ll “tweet” you!
We’re introducing Twitter, an opt-in
message system that enables you to stay
on top of upcoming special events at
the Library through text messages you
can receive on your cell phone. To get
Library “Tweets,” all you need to do is
go to our Website at www.guilpl.org and
click on the little blue “t” in the
upper left corner of the home
page. Or you can visit http://
twitter.com/GuilderlandLib
We’re using Twitter to remind
patrons of concerts and special events.
One of the great things about these
messages is that you’ll get them ONLY
when something important is going on.
These are event-driven reminders, not
regularly scheduled messages.
Need a Reminder?
Did you know? You can get e-mail
reminders about GPL events through
our Evanced system. Next time you
visit our website and
find a calendar event
that you want to attend,
take advantage of the
“Remind Me” feature at the top of the
event’s listing.You’ll get an e-message
shortly before the occasion.

Adults: What are You Reading this Summer?
Share your thoughts, maybe win dinner!
Why should the kids have all the fun? Adult summer reading is a joy in
itself! No competition, no stress, just share your thoughts about what
you’ve read on our Summer Sizzlers web page.
Everyone who posts a review will be entered in a drawing for prizes
(does a free dinner sound good?) at the end of the summer. But the big reward is finding
out about all the great books your GPL friends are reading that you might enjoy, too.
Go to the Adults tab on our website at www.guilpl.org to post your thoughts or get
hints about what you might like to read next!

The Quadricentennial Continues
Two special book discussions about the explorations of
Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain
There was a short period of time in 1609 when Henry
Hudson and Samuel de Champlain could have met. Hudson
was exploring the river later named for him sailing from the
south, while Champlain was documenting New York waterways
coming from the north. They got close, but did not meet.
Hudson and de Champlain were two very different men. Did
you know that Hudson’s crew abandoned him in the Bay that
bears his name? Or, that the only place Champlain named
Island at the Center of the World,
by Russell Shorto
Thursday, July 16 @ 7:30 pm
While no portraits of Henry Hudson
are known to exist, the Cyclopedia of
Universal History offers this popular
image to be of the man, above. At
right: Samuel de Champlain.
Resources found in the New York
State Archives by curator of historical
manuscripts, Peter Christoph, provided
many of the resources and much of
the documentation underpinning this
excellent book written by Russell
Shorto. More than 25 years went
into the study and translation of the
materials originally written in Dutch.
The Dutch brought their values of
tolerance, openness and free trade to
the New World. This book illuminates
many previously unknown aspects of
the life and times of settlers in our area
400 years ago. Peter Christoph will
join us for this discussion.

Champlain’s Dream,
by David Hackett Fischer
Monday, August 10 @ 7:30 pm
David Hackett Fischer, Pulitzer Prize-winner for Washington’s
Crossing, has written the definitive biography of Samuel de
Champlain (1567-1635). By the time he made his way to North
America, Champlain was an experienced
sailor and cartographer. He had formed
ideas about creating a peaceful society
that would trade on par with the native
peoples whom he so admired. In order
to deal with the politics of the French
court and rival nations, Champlain had
to be a supreme diplomat. Dr. JeanFrancois Brière, Professor of French
Studies at the University at Albany, will
join us for a discussion of this outstanding book. He will also share
his perspective as an historian of French overseas expansion. R
Historic Maps
This map of Champlain’s exploration is just one of the more than
200,000 high-resolution, full-color historic maps – dating from
the 15th century to the present – that you can access through
our website.
