Page 2 Guilderland Public Library Newsletter :: Summer 2009 Adult Services The Quadricentennial Continues Two special book discussions about the explorations of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain There was a short period of time in 1609 when Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain could have met. Hudson was exploring the river later named for him sailing from the south, while Champlain was documenting New York waterways coming from the north. They got close, but did not meet. Hudson and de Champlain were two very different men. Did you know that Hudson’s crew abandoned him in the Bay that bears his name? Or, that the only place Champlain named Island at the Center of the World, by Russell Shorto Thursday, July 16 @ 7:30 pm While no portraits of Henry Hudson are known to exist, the Cyclopedia of Universal History offers this popular image to be of the man, above. At right: Samuel de Champlain. Resources found in the New York State Archives by curator of historical manuscripts, Peter Christoph, provided many of the resources and much of the documentation underpinning this excellent book written by Russell Shorto. More than 25 years went into the study and translation of the materials originally written in Dutch. The Dutch brought their values of tolerance, openness and free trade to the New World. This book illuminates many previously unknown aspects of the life and times of settlers in our area 400 years ago. Peter Christoph will join us for this discussion. R Save the Dates! Champlain’s Dream, by David Hackett Fischer Monday, August 10 @ 7:30 pm David Hackett Fischer, Pulitzer Prize-winner for Washington’s Crossing, has written the definitive biography of Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635). By the time he made his way to North America, Champlain was an experienced sailor and cartographer. He had formed ideas about creating a peaceful society that would trade on par with the native peoples whom he so admired. In order to deal with the politics of the French court and rival nations, Champlain had to be a supreme diplomat. Dr. JeanFrancois Brière, Professor of French Studies at the University at Albany, will join us for a discussion of this outstanding book. He will also share his perspective as an historian of French overseas expansion. R Historic Maps This map of Champlain’s exploration is just one of the more than 200,000 high-resolution, full-color historic maps – dating from the 15th century to the present – that you can access through our website.
