2-cycle – An internal combustion engine that utilizes two distinct strokes to complete an operating cycle. Requires the mixture of oil and gas. NOTE: B & S no longer produces 2–cycle engines. B &S has not manufactured this type of an engine for 20 years. 4-cycle – An internal combustion engine that uses four piston strokes to complete an operating cycle. (Intake, compression, power and exhaust). Oil and gasoline are added separately. ELS (stands for “Extended Life Series”): A series of engines that have a cast iron cylinder sleeve, special coated pistons, a linear balancing system and other technological advances to extend the lifespan of the engine. Horsepower (HP): Maximum rated horsepower (US) for engine model series (actual HP label on engine may be less than maximum rated HP). This number is typically found on a large label/sticker on the engine. See also “Model” Intek (stands for “Innovative Technology”) – The Intek line of engines is Briggs & Stratton’s performance line. All Intek engines are overhead valve, but not all over head valve engines are Intek. L-Head engine (also known as “Side Valve” or “Flathead”): An engine that has Valves and related components located in the Cylinder Block. The Valves are installed into a chamber next to the Piston under the spark plug. NOTE: All Quantum, Sprint, Classic and Quattro engines are of L-head design Long Life Platinum Spark Plug: A premium spark plug that aids in easier starting, results in reduced wear, resists fouling and improves ignition performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Model: typically the first 5 or 6 numbers STAMPED on the sheet metal of the engine either by the spark plug, OHV cover, blower/rewind housing, or on muffler heat shield. STAMPED Model numbers OHV (stands for “Overhead Valve”): An engine that has Valves and related components located in the Cylinder Head. The Valves are located in the Head directly above the Piston. Overhead valve cover (located by spark plug) Overhead valve cover Older Models: Typically for engines made prior to 1965 Opposed Twin: An engine that has two horizontal cylinders that is on opposite sides of each other. Outboard – An engine that is positioned outside the hull of a vessel. Briggs & Stratton outboard motors come in electric (3HP) and 4-stroke (5HP). Spark plug gap: The distance from the center electrode to the ground electrode on a spark plug. Vanguard: The Vanguard Series of engines is Briggs & Stratton’s top-of-the-line overhead valve engine. These engines are made with premium parts and are only installed on premium products. or V-Twin Cylinder OHV (Overhead Valve): An engine that has two Cylinders with Pistons that are angled to each other to form a “V” design.
