The Boston Preservation
Alliance has learned that
Emmanuel College is in the
process of purchasing the
historic William Lloyd
Garrison house and grounds,
with the intention to use the
property as a spiritual retreat
and service-learning center for
students. Constructed in
1854, "Rockledge" is the only
remaining building in Boston
associated with the famous
abolitionist.
The house faced an uncertain future after its former owners, the
Society of St. Margaret convent, made a decision to relocate to
Duxbury. A 2011 plan by a charter school to purchase the property
raised concerns from neighbors, specifically the proposed construction
of a bus drop-off zone and playground on the grounds directly in front of
Rockledge that would have severely impacted the leafy, semi-rural
setting of this National Historic Landmark. The new proposal by
Emmanuel College has been embraced by the Alliance, as well as the
Society of St. Margaret, the Roxbury Highlands neighborhood, and the
historic preservation community.

Fenway Studios Tour - A Boston Art &
Architectural Treasure
When: Tuesday, August 7th
Where: Fenway Studios, 30 Ipswich Street
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
What does Fenway Studios have in common with the Federal Reserve
Bank? The answer is that most people who know about the building
have not been inside. While the Board of Friends of Fenway Studios
can't get you inside the Federal Reserve, we can offer you an insiders
tour of Fenway Studios, co-sponsored by Friends of Fenway Studios

Looking for fun ways
to explore, celebrate,
or learn more about
Boston's history and
architecture?
and the Boston Preservation Alliance.
Located at 30 Ipswich Street, in the
Fenway Cultural District, the tour is
designed to introduce visitors to the
wonderful Arts & Crafts building, some
of today's artists and, as one visitor
called them, the "ghosts of artists
past". Through the generosity of the
artists, visitors will see the works of
four artists on the tour. The selection
of artists is made with a view toward
showing the variety of art that is being
done in the Studios today and ample
time is provided for talking with each
artist in his or her studio so that visitors can gain an understanding of
the artist's creative spirit.
This event is free for members of the Alliance and $10 for nonmembers. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by August
3rd to reserve a spot. Members and non-members may register
securely via Eventbrite.
For more information, please email Christine Piontek or call
617.367.2458.
