Full Marks helps Vigar double up
HORSE RACING
IT WAS a winning double for leading
apprentice Raymond Vigar at Pioneer
Park on Saturday.
The young rider has been riding
the crest of a winning wave since returning to the Northern Territory
after a stint in Queensland throughout the major portion of last season.
Vigar opened his account when
the Kevin Lamprecht-trained Full
Marks cracked it for his first victory in
the Bart Cummings Tribute Maiden
Handicap (1200m).
Full Marks had been racing without much luck lately and the made
the most of his opportunity, although
his supporter’s were given a fright at
the end.
Full Marks made a rampant charge
around the home bend to tackle the
leader, Never Pointless.
He looked like racing away for a
big win, but his effort was short-lived
and the race became a real battle over
the final 200m.
With Vigar throwing everything
he had at Full Marks, the gelding
scrambled home to just win.
Not too many meetings pass
without Lisa Lefoe winning a race and
Vigar rang up his double on Maboots
for the premier trainer.
Maboots has made improvement
since arriving here and ran decent
time in winning.
He hurtled over from an outside
barrier and sailed away for an
effortless victory.
Royal Choice was first up from a
spell and ran an eye catching second.
Just Froff, the red-hot favourite,
struggled into third spot.
She was not the same horse that
created a lasting impression in
winning her maiden just two weeks
before.
Engine Fifty Five has only had
five runs here and won three of
them and in the process created a
fair impression.
Just four weeks ago, the gelding
beat Via Mazzini and Seth’s Special in
a Class B race.
He won a difficult to win 0/76
Class on Saturday and did it on his
ear.
He left good galloper’s Lucerne
Vale, Bel Vuitton and The Hummel
grasping at thin air as he slipped away
at the 400m.
Make no bones about it, Engine
Fifty Five has a motor that revs on
high and he will put a significant
dent in a few reputations in the
coming months.
Another very good win was that of
the Will Savage-trained Gala Arch
who went coast to coast in winning
the final race on the card.
Felicia Bergstrand had the long
striding galloper moving along in
the lead all race and his rivals lacked
the foot speed to chase him down.

TOUCH FOOTBALL
TAMA Wakelin’s portfolio
has taken yet another addition.
Just months after being appointed as the NRL’s development officer in Alice Springs,
Wakelin has taken up a
development role for Touch
Football Australia.
His aim is to raise the profile of the sport in conjunction
with rugby league in Central
Australia.
“Anthony Jennings from
Touch Football Australia in
Canberra touched base with
me and said ‘hey, we know
you’re employed by the NRL
and we’d like you to come on
board with Touch Football
Australia’,” Wakelin said of
the offer.
“(I’m going) to do clinics in
schools, primary schools, intermediate and the senior colleges and I am pretty fortunate to
jump on board.”
TFA operates under the
NRL umbrella and Wakelin
will also look at getting local
competitions up and running.
“The social and schools
competitions and after-school
stuff have been quite successful and I’ve been involved with
Yirara College, but it’s all
about participation numbers,”
Wakelin said.
He said having one of Australia’s leading touch footy referees, Samantha Hacon, on
board was a real bonus.
“It’s good having the
support based from her and
support from Tim Pearson and
also Karen Kent who runs the
secondary schools programs,”
Wakelin said. “There’s also
that support structure in place
for me and they’ve been great
so far in terms of supplying
equipment.”
Wakelin holds a busy
5am-11pm work day as he juggles his roles as a Yirara College sports co-ordinator and
fitness instructor at Lasseters.
“It’s good to be involved
with this sort of add-on sport
and I should know in the next
few weeks whether my NRL
role will continue as part-time
or it might become fulltime,”
he said.
Jockey Raymond Vigar gives Trainer Kevin Lamprecht a winner in the first race at Pioneer Park on Full Marks.
