Lexington Concord Staff Ride – 4 APR 09
1. Situation
a. Enemy Forces: None
b. Friendly Forces: MIT Army ROTC Cadre
c. Attachments/Detachments: None.
2. Mission
Paul Revere Battalion’s MSIVs conduct the Lexington-Concord Battle Staff Ride NLT
041600APR09 in order to complete this pre-commissioning requirement.
3. Execution
Intent: It is the Commander’s intent that all MSIV’s complete the Staff Ride Precommissioning requirement with an emphasis on the study of military history and while
accomplishing the military task of conducting a foot march.
a. Concept of the Operation:
1. Phase I: Preparation - This phase consists of all preparatory actions for the staff
ride including: cadet and cadre personal preparation, gathering of all resources
and communication of the plan. This phase begin upon the beginning of the
semester and ends upon departure from MIT Army ROTC.
2. Phase II: Preliminary Study - This phase commences upon departure from MIT
Army ROTC. This will include travel to the battlefield site, and preparatory
briefings on the battlefield prior to commencement of field study. This phase
ends upon commencement of discussion of battlefield activities.
3. Phase III: Field Study - This phase commences upon discussion of battlefield
activities. It will consist of activities on Lexington’s Battle Green, battle activities
at the Concord’s North Bridge, and battle activities along battle road. It will also
consist of both vehicle and foot transportation to all battlefield sites. This phase
ends upon completion of discussion of battlefield activities at Lexington Battle
Green.
4. Phase IV: Consolidation and Esprit Event - This phase begins upon vehicle
transportation to a picnic site and ends upon completion of transportation to MIT
Army ROTC. It consists of discussion of lessons learned from the battle, and a
battalion barbeque.
5. Phase V: After Action Review - This begins upon arrival at MIT Army ROTC
and ends upon completion of AARs.
b. Maneuver:
1. Phase I: Cadets and cadre will all meet at 201 Vassar Street NLT 0645 for safety
brief and breakdown into chalks
2. Phase II: Cadets and cadre will move via 3 GSA vehicles from 201 Vassar Street
to Battle Green. Strip Map is in Annex C, Appendix 1. Upon arrival, cadets and
cadre will discussion the background of the battle, review biographies of key
personnel, discuss the plan of battle from both sides.
3. Phase III: While at Battle Green, cadets and cadre will commence discussion of of
what happened in Lexington. After completion of the Lexington portion, cadets
and cadre will move by van to Concord’s Old North Bridge. Strip map and
directions are in Annex C, Appendix 2. Upon arrival at Old North Bridge, cadets
and cadre will discuss battlefield actions at the Old North Bridge. Cadets and
cadre will commence a foot march along route shown in Annex C, Appendix 3.
Cadets and Cadre will make periodic stops at the following locations: Merriam’s
Corner, Hardy’s Hill, Bloody Angle, Hartwell Tavern, Paul Revere’s Capture
Site, Parker’s Revenge, The Bluff, Fiske’s Hill, and Lexington Battle Green.
4. Phase IV: Cadets and Cadre will move to the community park at Hanscom AFB
by GSA vehicle. Upon arrival cadets and cadre will conduct the integration
portion of the staff ride while cooking for the barbeque. Upon completion of the
barbeque, cadets and cadre will move by GSA to 201 Vassar Street and be
released.
5. Phase V: Written AAR comments will be collected and sent to the PMS.
c. Tasks to Maneuver Units:
1. All MSIV Cadets:
i. Conduct personal preparation IAW MS402 Syllabus and

ii. Arrive at staff ride in full uniform
iii. Be prepared to brief the following areas:
1. background of the battle;
2. events precipitating the battle to include: French and Indian War,
Coercive Acts, Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre, British move
to Salem, Provincial Congress meeting in Concord;
3. biography of your assigned person;
4. specifics on their role in each of the key parts of the battle;
5. terrain (OCOKA) for each of the battle sites;
6. principles of war displayed at each point.

d. Coordinating Instructions:
(1) Uniform will be ACU with soft cap, LBE and Rucksack
(2) Rucksack should include, at a minimum:
a. Wet weather top and bottoms
b. Poncho
c. Complete change of ACUs
d. Any additional items/weight desired, not to exceed a total of 30lbs.
(3) Cadets should eat breakfast prior to arrival at 201 Vassar Street
(4) Medevac will be to Emerson hospital. Map is enclosed at Annex C, Appendix 4
