The First Thanksgiving
Festivals with the spirit of
giving thanks have been common
in many cultures, so determining
the original Thanksgiving
celebration proves difficult. But
tradition recognizes the 1621 feast
between the Pilgrim settlers at
Plymouth Colony and
neighboring American Indians as
America’s first Thanksgiving.
Sailing from England aboard
the Mayflower, the Pilgrims
arrived in present-day
Massachusetts in the fall of 1620,
yet remained on the ship for
several months. When the
colonists moved ashore the
following spring, they were visited
by two English-speaking Indians,
Samoset and Squanto, who
showed the Pilgrims how to hunt
and grow their own food. Squanto
also served as an interpreter and
mediator between the settlers and
the neighboring Wampanoag
tribe.
Sometime between Sept. 21
and Nov. 1, the Pilgrims
organized a feast to celebrate the
success of their first crop. Around
90 Wampanoag, including Chief
Massasoit, joined the colonists for
the festivities, which lasted for
three days and included games,
singing and dancing, in addition
to the elaborate meal.
The Pilgrims’ records indicate
that regional fowl, such as ducks,
geese, swans and, yes, probably
turkey, were served at the feast,
along with venison brought by the
Wampanoag. Historians believe
that other foods present at the
meal included fish and shellfish,
beans, onions, porridge made
from cornmeal, berries, squash
and pumpkin—but no pumpkin
pie.

As I mentioned last month, I
will try to help you communicate
with people who are experiencing
dementia.
I may oversimplify a lot of
things, but like always, please feel
free to give me feedback if you
need me to clarify something.
Whenever you’re trying to
communicate to a person who is
experiencing dementia, you have
to always be centered.
This means clearing yourself of
all inner “noise,” putting aside
your own feelings, quieting the
thoughts that are running through
your head, and finding your inner
strength and resourcefulness.
If you meditate, do yoga or do
some form of martial arts, then
these words are familiar to you.
You may already be trained in
centering, and that is an extremely
important tool that you will need
to use often.
Centering is what you do when
you do not know what to do.
Centering is the way to handle
shocking, scary events. Centering
is the first step toward empathy.
Please feel free to see me; I can
teach you how to center.
Thank You to

Congratulations to Sarah
Greenseid Who Celebrated Her
105th Birthday Last Month!
Sarah Greenseid
When I told Sarah happy birthday, she
smiled, held my hand and gave me a genuine
“thank you.”
When I asked her if she had any tips on life,
she looked at me and said, “Try your best to be
happy and enjoy every day you get.” Beautiful
words from a beautiful soul.
Happy birthday Sarah.

Tips for A Thinner
Thanksgiving!
Gaining weight during the holiday
season is a national pastime. Did
you know that most people gain
at least a pound during the
holiday, some even gain more.
Worst is most people keep that
weight on permanently.
The good news is with a little
knowledge you can indulge
yourself in traditional holiday fare
and still enjoy a guilt-free
Thanksgiving feast. After all, being
stuffed is a good idea only if you
are a turkey.
Get Active: Eat less and exercise
more during the holidays to
prevent weight gain. Boost the
frequency of your fitness routine
the weeks ahead of the feast.
Take a walk early Thanksgiving
Day and then again after dinner if
you are up to it. It is a wonderful
way for families to get physical
and enjoy the holiday at the
same time.
Eat Breakfast: Eating a small
meal in the morning may give you
more control over your hunger.
Start your day with a healthy
breakfast, preferably one with
protein and fiber which may help
take the edge off your cravings
and allow you to be more sensible
later in the day during the
“big feast.”
Watch your Portions: Before
filling up your plate, evaluate the
buffet table and decide what
you’re going to choose.
Don’t squander your calories
on foods that you can have all
year long. Indulge with small
portions of holiday favorites so
you can enjoy your traditional
favorites
Best Bets on the Table: White
turkey meat, plain vegetables,
roasted sweet potatoes, mashed
potatoes and de-fatted gravy tend
to be the best bets because they
are lower in fat and calories.
Skip the Seconds and
Leftovers: Try to resist the
temptation to go back for second
helpings or leftovers. You are less
likely to overeat and have more
room for a delectable dessert. But
only one slice of that pumpkin
pie!!!
