• Sir Muir Grey
• A strategy we use to recall common pieces of
information
• Kernels: small chunks of useable knowledge
• Aphorisms
Aphorisms
• An aphorism is an original thought in a concise and
memorable form
• First used in the Aphorisms of Hippocrates. The oftcited first sentence of this work (see Ars longa, vita
brevis) is:
– Life is short, art long, opportunity fleeting,
experience deceptive, judgment difficult.
• In modern usage an aphorism is generally
understood to be a concise statement containing a
subjective truth or observation cleverly and pithily
written.
Medical Aphorisms
• Time is generally the best doctor.
– Ovid
• If you don't put your finger in it, you'll put your
foot in it
– Gastroenterologist
• Collected medical sayings from Hippocrates to
Osler
Aphorisms
• It is easy to get a thousand prescriptions, but
hard to get one single remedy
• In a dangerous illness, call in three doctors.
– Chinese sayings
