The National Hispanic Cultural Center offers a variety of fieldtrip oppor tunities for
students of all ages and abilities. We include home school, public, char ter, private
schools, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and other organizations. We can provide a Spanish
speaking educator or docent upon request.
SCHOOL DAY EDUCATION PROGRAMS
NHCC’s education depar tment offers local and international, culturally
engaging theatre, music, dance, and hands-on ar t making experiences
that provide a rich fieldtrip experience. All programs are free, unless
otherwise noted.

and Domenici Education Center
Schedule a tour of the Ofrenda Installation created by local schools and
community groups. Tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays and typically
run 20-30 minutes. Tours of the ofrendas can be requested in conjunction with a
tour of the museum and/or the entire Center.

includes a shor t lecture on the histor y of the

Salomé Mar tínez-Lutz’ stor y of three
generations of a Hispanic family who struggle
with alcohol abuse begins with a young man
who, as a child, lives in pover ty and in a home
where love is mixed with anxiety, fears, and
unfulfilled dreams. The conflict between father
and son repeats itself years later when the
young man has his own children. Presented in
par tnership with Teatro Nuevo México.

The Farolitos of Christmas

It’s Christmas in San Juan, New Mexico, and
young Luz worries that with her grandfather
sick and her father in the hospital, wounded
from the war, their usual celebration cannot
take place. This timeless, hear twarming play
by Rudolfo Anaya reflects the rich family
traditions of nor thern New Mexican Hispanic
culture. Presented in par tnership with the
Vor tex Theatre.

tremendous sensitivity to the needs of young children. He is also a professional
musician, Orff music teacher and steel band director. He brilliantly combines

Carnaval is a celebration of life that takes place annually in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad,
and New Orleans (Mardi Gras), as well as in other par ts of the world. It is by far
one of the world’s most widespread celebrations, and one of its biggest par ties.
Celebrate Carnaval, with a performance of sensational music, dance, and costumes
by Pandemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble.

The Education and Performing Ar ts Programs work with APS Fine Ar t Center to
host a four-day festival of musical and dance groups from area elementar y, middle
and high schools. Students par ticipate in workshops during the daytime and then
have a late afternoon or early evening oppor tunity to perform for each other,
parents and community members. This year the renowned group Cascada de
Flores will lead some of the workshops during Bellas Ar tes.

adversity, and Divine guidance. René Peña
takes you on the ride of her life, from the
Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial’s opening
ceremony to an oompah band on a small
town street in Germany. By the end, there’s a
suitcase full of memories, laughter, and love.

Real Women Have Curves

Josefina López’ original drama about five immigrant women working in a tiny
sewing factor y in East Los Angeles in 1987 highlights issues of gender politics and
the Latina immigrant experience, as the action follows the course of a summer
at the factor y and the women talk about their lives, loves, and deepest desires.

Yo Soy Joaquin

An epic poem famously associated with the Chicano movement of the 1960s, Yo
Soy Joaquín is presented by Patricio Trujillo in the form of a play. Joaquín speaks
of the struggles the Chicano people have faced in tr ying to achieve economic
justice and equal rights in the U.S., as well as in establishing their own identity.

National Institute of Flamenco

Yjastros is the first professional American touring company presenting flamenco
in true reper tor y format. The performers, under the direction of Joaquin
Encinias, are recognized internationally. Yjastros presents breathtaking flamenco
choreographies created for the company by some of the finest flamenco ar tists in
the world.

What is a curator? What is their job? What is their role in Ar t? Students will tour
select sections of current exhibits with NHCC’s ar t museum curator and learn
about what a curator’s job is in a museum. This engaging tour will be informative
and create a dialogue around the ar t. Students will have their own oppor tunity
to bring out their inner ar tist, with an age appropriate activity and create
something in relation to the viewed ar t work to take home.

Dia de los Muertos
Schedule a visit to your school by a member of our NHCC education staff.
Your students will learn from a shor t discussion about the histor y of Dia de los
Muer tos and then engage in a hands-on activity such as sugar skulls from scratch,
decorating pre-made sugar skulls, papel picado or creating mini-ofrenda.

children (grades 6th – 8th), focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Ar t & Math) in par tnership with Sandia National Labs Hispanic Leadership
Outreach Committee. Space is limited.

DREAMBUILDERS
Dream Builders, an NHCC annual event, was developed to inspire and foster
interest in the intersection of the Ar ts with Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (STEAM) disciplines. This is a community project designed to focus
on ar tistic expressions enabled through and integrated with technology while
highlighting our rich cultural identity. Our goals include: increasing the pool of
Hispanic students who pursue degrees in STEAM, suppor t the development
of a scientific and technically trained student-base with hands-on technology
experiences, and the use of the Ar ts and ar tistic methodologies to increase an
interest is STEAM and vice versa.
These goals are met through day-long workshops across the entire spectrum of
STEM +Ar ts. Workshops for middle school, high school and college age students
are offered along with a specialized workshop for teachers.
