OCTOBER Friday, October 30 High school only Estoy en el Rincón Wells Fargo Auditorium 10:00am – 12:00pm Salomé Mar tínez-Lutz’ stor y of three generations of a Hispanic family who struggle with alcohol abuse begins with a young man who, as a child, lives in pover ty and in a home where love is mixed with anxiety, fears, and unfulfilled dreams. The conflict between father and son repeats itself years later when the young man has his own children. Presented in par tnership with Teatro Nuevo México. DECEMBER Thursday, December 3 Friday, December 4 The Farolitos of Christmas Journal Theatre 10:00am- 12:00pm It’s Christmas in San Juan, New Mexico, and young Luz worries that with her grandfather sick and her father in the hospital, wounded from the war, their usual celebration cannot take place. This timeless, hear twarming play by Rudolfo Anaya reflects the rich family traditions of nor thern New Mexican Hispanic culture. Presented in par tnership with the Vor tex Theatre. Thursday, December 10 Hands on Art – Inspired by Staging the Self and New Mexico Portraiture Domenici Education Center 10 am – noon Limit 35 students Students visit the NHCC Ar t Museum for a facilitated discussion about a current exhibition, a piece of ar t or ar t-making technique, followed by a hands-on ar t making project inspired by the museum visit. FEBRUARY Friday, February 5 Carnaval Presented with Pandemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble Journal Theatre 10:00am- 12:00pm Carnaval is a celebration of life that takes place annually in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad, and New Orleans (Mardi Gras), as well as in other par ts of the world. It is by far one of the world’s most widespread celebrations, and one of its biggest par ties. Celebrate Carnaval, with a performance of sensational music, dance, and costumes by Pandemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble. Friday, February 19 High school only Traveling with Angels Wells Fargo Auditorium 10:00am – 12:00pm In one woman’s personal stor y of adventure, adversity, and Divine guidance. René Peña takes you on the ride of her life, from the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial’s opening ceremony to an oompah band on a small town street in Germany. By the end, there’s a suitcase full of memories, laughter, and love. FEBRUARY Thursday, February 25 Jesus Muñoz Flamenco Journal Theatre 10:00am- 12:00pm Jesus Muñoz has been working professionally since 2007 with a vision of growing innovative ideas through the lens of rare traditional structures. Muñoz has performed throughout most of the USA, Canada and Spain as a dancer, musician and choreographer. MARCH Friday, March 18 High school only Real Women Have Curves Wells Fargo Auditorium 10:00am – 12 noon Josefina López’ original drama about five immigrant women working in a tiny sewing factor y in East Los Angeles in 1987 highlights issues of gender politics and the Latina immigrant experience, as the action follows the course of a summer at the factor y and the women talk about their lives, loves, and deepest desires. Presented in par tnership with Teatro Nuevo México. APRIL Friday, April 8 High school only Yo Soy Joaquin Wells Fargo Auditorium 10:00am – 12:00pm An epic poem famously associated with the Chicano movement of the 1960s, Yo Soy Joaquín is presented by Patricio Trujillo in the form of a play. Joaquín speaks of the struggles the Chicano people have faced in tr ying to achieve economic justice and equal rights in the U.S., as well as in establishing their own identity. Thursday, April 14 Yjastros Presented with the National Institute of Flamenco Journal Theatre 10:00am - 12:00pm Yjastros is the first professional American touring company presenting flamenco in true reper tor y format. The performers, under the direction of Joaquin Encinias, are recognized internationally. Yjastros presents breathtaking flamenco choreographies created for the company by some of the finest flamenco ar tists in the world. APRIL Thursday, April 14 Curator Tour & Hands-On Art Domenici Education Center 10:00am – 12:00pm Limit 35 students per session What is a curator? What is their job? What is their role in Ar t? Students will tour select sections of current exhibits with NHCC’s ar t museum curator and learn about what a curator’s job is in a museum. This engaging tour will be informative and create a dialogue around the ar t. Students will have their own oppor tunity to bring out their inner ar tist, with an age appropriate activity and create something in relation to the viewed ar t work to take home. The Spring Wells Fargo Auditorium 10:00am - 12:00pm La Mesa Produce’s satirical sketch comedy, spiced with a DJ, video, and computer media, and providing a humorous taste of life in the barrio—how it is changing, where it might be going, and the growing pains it experiences along the way. This is a community project designed to focus on ar tistic expressions enabled through and integrated with technology while highlighting our rich cultural identity. Our goals include: increasing the pool of Hispanic students who pursue degrees in STEAM, suppor t the development of a scientific and technically trained student-base with hands-on technology experiences, and the use of the Ar ts and ar tistic methodologies to increase an interest is STEAM and vice versa. These goals are met through day-long workshops across the entire spectrum of STEM +Ar ts. Workshops for middle school, high school and college age students are offered along with a specialized workshop for teachers.
