Training Fund
The Training Fund offers a wide range of
excellent industry and basic education
programs designed especially for building
service workers. These courses are developed with input from building owners
and union members to give you the skills
you need to succeed. Best of all it is free
of charge for eligible members!
This year you can look forward to:
• New offerings of Black Seal training
to ensure compliance in New Jersey
schools.
• In Hackensack, develop your industry
skills by attending Electricity Basics,
Plumbing Basics and Carpentry Basics.
• Look forward to learning the latest
cleaning techniques and procedures by
attending green cleaning seminars.
Education at the 32BJ Training Fund
provides a rich opportunity for you to
attain your educational and career objectives whether you work in commercial,
residential, or public school buildings. We
offer a variety of schedules to accommodate working students and nontraditional
students returning to the classroom after
an absence.

The 32BJ Training Fund is a joint
labor-management partnership that
offers training to eligible participants
at no cost. The fund is supported by
contributions negotiated between
32BJ SEIU and participating employers.
Our mission is to train every participant
to grow to the next level. We want to
continually raise the standards of our
industry by providing 32BJ members
with the tools they need to meet the
challenges of a changing industry.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the Training Fund is
fully detailed in the Summary Plan
Description (SPD) available online at
www.seiu32bj.org or by calling Member
Services at 800-551-32BJ (3225),
Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm.
Your eligibility depends on the particular collective bargaining agreement or
participation agreement covering your
employment. Generally, the waiting
period for training is 180 days unless
otherwise specified in your collective
bargaining agreement or participation
agreement.
If you become ineligible and are out of
work for more than 90 days, you will be
required to complete the waiting period
again. If you are taking a class when you
become ineligible you will be allowed to
complete your class for that trimester.

expected not only to read the Rules &
Regulations, but also to show your fellow
students the respect they deserve by
abiding by them.
Attendance Policy
Minimum attendance of 80 percent
is required.
Course/Seminar
Prerequisites
Some courses and seminars require you
to complete a prerequisite—a prepara-
tory course—before you enroll. Some
courses require minimum reading and
math skills. Mastery of these skills can
be established by presenting a U.S. high
school diploma, or GED, or by passing a
standardized test at registration. These
prerequisites are noted above the course
description if they are required.
Emergency School Closings
To inquire about the possible cancellation
of classes in the event of a weather emergency or other hazardous conditions,
contact your site manager for information.

Prerequisite: Air Conditioning and
Refrigeration I
Troubleshoot and make mechanical and
electrical repairs to domestic refrigerators. Learn the basic cycle of a domestic
refrigerator, and the tools and techniques
used to install pressure gauges as per EPA
regulations. Understand system pressure,
recovery, evacuation, charging and methods used to leak-check systems. Read
electrical schematics and understand
basic motor principles and operation.

Operate tools within industry guidelines; make minor floor, wall and ceiling
repairs; and perform basic carpentry
tasks. Identify materials, tools and repair
techniques. Learn how to diagnose problems and perform minor repairs through
hands-on experience.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of
English as a Second Language I or the
proven ability to speak and write English
Prepare for the U.S. Citizenship
Examination. Study U.S. history and government structure, practice the citizenship interview, and review the questions
on the newest version of the citizenship
exam. Seminar will include presentations
by the Legal Fund on the immigration
process and available funds benefits.

Gain American Heart Association
certification in CPR/Defibrillator. Learn
appropriate responses to heart attacks,

Prerequisite: Successful completion of
English as a Second Language II, instructor
reference, or appropriate score on standardized English as a Second Language test
Express complex ideas and communicate
effectively in the work environment.
Understand the meaning and appropriate use of all verb tenses and be prepared
to take the Reading and Writing course.
Through discussion, reading and writing,
students will learn idiomatic expressions and how to exchange complicated
information.

Prepare to sit for the High Pressure
Fireman’s License examination. State eligibility requires that an applicant MUST
have worked as a helper, apprentice or
assistant to a licensed fireman in a high
pressure plant for at least three months.
The Bureau of Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Compliance may request a copy of a boiler
operator’s log for the examiner’s review
during approval of the application.

Fireman, Low Pressure Black Seal in
Charge, which enables students to work
in boiler rooms or refrigeration facilities
in the state of New Jersey. Learn about
the application process with the state.
GED Preparation I:
The Five Subject

of 6.0 on a standardized test
Improve skills in social studies, history,
science, math, reading, and writing to
a high school level. Read analytically
and interpret graphs and illustrations.
Through individual diagnostic assessments, students focus on the subject

You may enroll to take this course online
and study from home on your own schedule. You will have to attend one orientation session at the school.

plumbing. Students will be exposed and
become familiar with the day to day activities of a handyman or superintendent.
Acquire hands-on experience in the general repairs and maintenance of a building.
One 2-hour session

Learn what you must know before
buying a home, leasing a car, or
purchasing appliances on credit.
Know why you need a will, learn
simple tools to manage your personal property, and plan for the

loved ones, and your estate goes
to your family instead of creditors
or the government.
Plumbing Basics

Prerequisites: Appropriate reading and math
level or high school diploma or GED, successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment
in, Tools of the Trade (Test Out available)
Install and repair faucets, toilets,
flushometers, valves, basins, and tubs.
Work with a variety of piping and gain
practical experience in techniques such
as pipe soldering, sweating, swaging,
and threading. Learn basics of plumbing
codes, water conservation technology,
and the WaterSense program.

and Practice

of 9.0 on a standardized test
Prepare to take the GED Test.

Green Cleaning and
Maintenance
One 3-hour session
Acquire strategies for low-impact environmental cleaning and housekeeping
and appropriate disposal of liquid waste.
The goal of “green housekeeping” is to
minimize contamination of occupied
areas by chemical, biological, or particle
pollutants, and also to reduce pollution in
the soil, water, and air.

Security Awareness
One 3-hour session
Communicate effectively with emergency
personnel and detect possible safety
concerns. Learn general security and
terrorism awareness including observation skills, indicators of a terrorist event,
tactical communication, and the role of
building workers at emergency scenes.
Spanish for the
Workplace I
11 weeks
Communicate more effectively with
Spanish-speaking coworkers and tenants. This is an introductory interactive
listening, reading, writing, and speaking
course. Engage in a variety of conversational activities ranging from small talk
to job-specific discussions.
Spanish for the
Workplace II
11 weeks
Increase Spanish fluency through the
study of Spanish media and Latino
culture in and outside of the classroom.
Become more effective at reading,
writing, and conversing in Spanish.
Tools of the Trade
One 6-hour session or
Two 3-hour sessions

Discover which tool is appropriate for a
given task. Explore the names and uses
of a wide range of hand and power tools
used for plumbing, electrical, carpentry
and appliance repair. Learn how to clean,
maintain, and store tools to prolong their
useful lives.

Elegibilidad
La elegibilidad para participar en el 32BJ
Training Fund está ampliamente detallada en
la Descripción abreviada del plan (SPD, por
sus siglas en inglés) disponible en línea en
training.32bjfunds.com, o si llama al Centro
de servicios para afiliados al 800-551-32BJ
(3225), de lunes a viernes, de 8 a.m. a 5 p.m.
Su elegibilidad depende del acuerdo
colectivo de trabajo específico o del acuerdo
de participación que lo cubra en su empleo.
Generalmente, el periodo de espera es de 180
días, a menos que se especifique otra cosa
en su acuerdo colectivo de trabajo o acuerdo
de participación. Si trabaja para la División
de Escuelas Públicas debe llevar empleado 3
meses, trabajando un promedio de 60 horas
al mes para poder tomar las clases.

Si pierde su elegibilidad y permanece
fuera del trabajo más de 90 días, necesitará

Si está tomando clases y pierde su elegibilidad,
se le permitirá completar sus clases durante
ese trimestre.
Clases en su lugar de trabajo
Si usted, una compañía de administración
o el dueño de un edificio tienen 10 o más
participantes elegibles interesados en asistir
a una clase y cuentan con el lugar adecuado,
el 32BJ Training Fund podrá dictar las clases
indicadas con este símbolo en su edificio.

Creación de un ambiente
para el aprendizaje
Los participantes que toman cursos mediante
el 32BJ Training Fund son personas muy trabajadoras que muestran un gran compromiso
con su desarrollo personal y profesional. Al
inicio de cada curso, se distribuirán las normas
y los reglamentos. Se espera que no sólo los
lea, sino que también les demuestre a sus
compañeros de curso el respeto que merecen,
al complir las normas y los reglamentos.
Política de asistencia
Se requiere una asistencia mínima del 80%.
Requisitos previos para
cursos/seminarios
Algunos cursos y seminarios requieren que
finalice un curso preparatorio antes de inscribirse. Algunos cursos requieren habilidades
mínimas de lectura y matemáticas. Es posible
establecer el dominio de estas habilidades
presentando un diploma de secundaria de los
Estados Unidos o GED, o mediante un examen
estandarizado tomado al registrarse. Estos
requisitos previos se incluyen por encima de
la descripción del curso si corresponde.

el idioma inglés. Adquiera las habilidades básicas del idioma necesarias para comunicarse en
el trabajo, la escuela y la comunidad. Aprenderá
a formular oraciones declarativas en pasado
simple, presente, presente continuo y futuro.

disposición apropiada de desperdicios líquidos.
El objetivo del “mantenimiento ecológico” es
minimizar la contaminación de las áreas ocupadas por parte de los contaminantes químicos,
biológicos o de partículas, y también reducir la
polución en la tierra, agua y aire.
Mantenimiento Basico
ses SESIONES DE 3 HORAS
Obtener conocimiento fundamental en carpintería, electricidad y plomería. Los estudiantes
van a estar familiarizados con las actividades
diarias de una persona de mantenimiento o
de un superintendente. Se adquiere la práctica
necesaria en la reparación y mantenimiento en
general en un edificio.
Resucitación cardiopulmonar
(CPR) y desfibrilador para
adultos y niños
UNA SESIÓN DE 4 HORAS
Inglés como segundo
idioma II: Conversación
y comunicación
Obtenga una certificación en Resucitación
cardiopulmonar (CPR) y desfibrilador de la
American Heart Association. Aprenda las
respuestas apropiadas a los ataques cardíacos,
asfixia, shock diabético, y cómo estabilizar las
víctimas hasta que llegue el personal de EMS.

DOS SESIONES DE 2 HORAS O
UNA SESIÓN DE 4 HORAS
Aprenderá a tratar efectivamente con los arrendatarios, empleadores, compañeros de trabajo
y miembros del público. A través de debates y
la técnica de juego de roles, aprenderá sobre la
resolución de conflictos, la conducta profesional y las habilidades de comunicación.
