Sequence one page 1-15 STATEMENT Willy has a high opinion of him self. QUOTE “I’m vital in New England” Willy has a contradictory nature “Biff is a lazy bum!” “Biff he’s not lazy.” SETTING Willy’s garden is slowly being killed. BIFF has a bad relation ship with his father “The grass don’t grow anymore.” “Why does dad mock me all the time?” BIFF is as confused as his father “I’m not married, I’m not in business,… I’m like a boy.” COMMENT Willy over inflates the truth, over exaggeration. Also blame others rather than self. He is confused he goes from attacking Biff to defending him over the course of a page. Symbolic of Willy’s life Feels constant pressure from father that he is not good enough. Enjoys working on a farm in the outdoors but feels he is a failure for not doing well in business. Sequence two page 16 to 27 STATEMENT Willy’s response to Biff stealing a football Willy tell the boys about his trip Willy’s view of Bernard and business Willy is not the success he makes out. Willys mistress, why? We learn the true picture of Biff QUOTE “he’s gotta practice with a regulation ball, doesn’t he? Coach’ll probably congratulate you on your initiative.” “I can park my car in any street in New England, and the cops protect it like their own.” “Because a man who makes an appearance in the business world… is the man that gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want. “people don’t seem to take to me… laugh at me… Im fat.” “I picked you.” “too rough with the girls,” COMMENT Willy forces the wrong ideals onto the boys. Ok to steal as long as you’re well liked. Willy over exaggerates his popularity to the boys. Education and intelligence is not enough. Popularity is what you need to succeed. Obviously this is not true. Reality different from Willys big ideas. Willys weak cant resist the ego boost. Beneath the veneer of popularity Biff is not a very nice guy. Sequence 3 P 27 -35 STATEMENT Willys mixed up ideals Bens who Willy Idolises QUOTE “A man who can’t handle tools is not a man. You’re disgusting.” “I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. And COMMENT This however is the very thing that Willy berates Biff for. Ben is a brave, adventurous figure the opposite of Willy. Bens view of the world Willys relation ship with boys by God I was rich.” “Never fight fair with a stranger, boy. You’ll never get out of the jungle that way.” “ They’d go into the jaws of hell for me” Sums up Bens view of business and life in general. Willy and the boys used to be very close boys idolised him. Sequence 4 p 36-43 STATEMENT Willy supported Biff QUOTE “Diamond watch fob… You pawned it … for Biffs correspondence course.” “we don’t belong in this nuthouse of a city! We should be mixing cement on some open plain, or – or carpenters. COMMENT Again proof how much Willy loves Biff. QUOTE “That is a one-million-dollar idea!” “He did like me. Always liked me.” “Like a young god. Hercules” COMMENT Willy pleased when boys follow his dream. Begins to gain confidence and self belief. Willy had such high expectations for Biff and Biff has not lived up to them. QUOTE “Will you stop mending stockings?” COMMENT Reminds Willy of the big secret his mistress. STATEMENT The reality of business QUOTE “ Cause you gotta admit, business is business.” Willys outrage “You can’t eat the orange and throw the peel away – a man is not a piece of fruit!” COMMENT This is the opposite of Willys idea, personality doesn’t matter only money. Here the imagery sums up what has happened to Willy he has been used up all his worth taken out of him and now he is being tossed aside(sacked). Biffs internal conflict Biff like Willy is confused and is drawn to the outdoors but the business world keeps pulling him back. Repetition of or shows confusion. Sequence 5 P 43-49 STATEMENT Will is excited by Boys idea Biff fall under the spell Willy remembers young Biff ACT 2 Sequence 6 P 50-54 STATEMENT Willys guilt Sequence 7 P 55-61 Sequence 8 P61-66 STATEMENT Bens statement of success QUOTE “Lay your hand on it. Where is COMMENT Only what you have that it?” counts not dreams of the future. QUOTE “The only thing you got in the world is what you can sell. And the funny thing is that you’re a salesman, and you don’t know that.” COMMENT All Willys ideas about popularity and being well liked are worthless if you are not making money. STATEMENT Biff breaks free of the Dream QUOTE We’ve been talking in a dream for fifteen years.” Biffs view of his father “A fine troubled prince. A hardworking, unappreciated prince.” “He wouldn’t listen to you… You fake! You phoney little fake! You fake! COMMENT Biff casts off the illusion that they have created for themselves. Willy done the wrong things for the right reasons. Sequence 9 P 66-73 STATEMENT Charley states how business works. Sequence 10 P 73-93 The secret is discovered Biffs vision of his father is shattered by the affair, he feels betrayed and lied to. He cant trust anything his father said. Sequence 11 P93-105 STATEMENT Willy planning his suicide QUOTE “he thinks I’m nothing so he spites me. But the funeral… the boy will be thunderstruck.. he’ll see what I am. Biff confronts Willy “The man don’t know who we are… We never told the truth for ten minutes in this house!” “I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air” “The work and the food and time to sit and smoke… all I want is out there. Biff has realised what he wants Willy has a realisation “He cried! Cried to me.” COMMENT He thinks his death will improve Biffs opinion of him, just like Dave Singleman. However it turns out to have the opposite effect. Biff confronts Willy with the truth. The life in the outdoors in the country working with his hands is a role they are all best suited for. He finally realises that Biff loves him.
