Successful Reader Framework Successful Reader will be used in all 6-10 ELAR classrooms. It will be used a minimum of 3 days a week the first 6 weeks and 2 days a week for the remainder of the year; excluding the 5th 6 weeks for 9th and 10th grades. CSCOPE IFD will be followed the remaining days of the week; teaching genre through the CSCOPE lesson organizer and all TEKS through CSCOPE and Successful Reader. An IRL will be created on each campus to house the Successful Reader novels, student books, and supplemental resources: Boldprint and Flipped Perspective books. Purposeful Planning - Each campus and department needs to complete a purposeful planning YAG worksheet for each of the 6 weeks. It will be left to the teacher to determine: • Novel selection • SR and CSCOPE schedule (alternating days or 2 day/3 day schedule) • Student Grouping and support needed per student/class using STAR Renaissance, Grades, STAAR results, observations, etc. Literature Groups As the year progresses, we need to be seeing reading groups based on each group’s reading levels. This will be better defined and trainings will be available this summer and the 2013-2014 school term. We do not want to see the class reading the same novel in the same manner at the same time. Graeber ELAR 2013 Middle school students should not solely be doing independent reading. They should be doing a variety of the following based upon their needs: Read aloud, partner/group reading, independent reading, and reading with audio. All students should be using a variety of strategies like 5-2-5, Nonfiction and Fiction reading strategies, critical conversation, writing, and questioning. the 3rd Six Weeks with Informational Text. Reasoning 1. Not everyone is trying to do their research project at the same time (which has been a problem in the past because of a lack of resources and technology). 2. If a student does poorly on the research, they have a chance to make it up if it is done in the 1st Semester instead of the 2nd Semester. 3. Research better aligns with the Informational Text Unit. 9th Grade Suggested Alignment 1st Six Weeks Tears of the Tiger Daniel X 2nd Six Weeks Break Out The Giver 3rd Six Weeks The Great Fire Wild Man Island 4th Six Weeks Hatchet Defining Dulcie 6th 6 Weeks Student Choice 10th Grade Suggested Alignment 1st Six Weeks Buddha Boy The Call of the Wild 2nd Six Weeks The Time Machine Amos Fortune Free Man 3rd Six Weeks Blizzard!
