Dear Parents
Welcome to current newsletter, you may well have noticed that this
newsletter has been delayed by the winter break for which I apologize.
The IBO have produced a model of the programme to assist students,
parents and teachers.
It is important to recognize the Learner Profile at the center and the the
transdisciplinary themes around the outside.

This week, the Year 1 class inquired on how things changed. They were visited
by one of their classmate’s grandmother. They asked her questions about how
life was like when she was young. She even gave them postcards and food
stubs. They compared her life before from what life is like now.
The children also went on a fieldtrip to Klockers Hus. They saw samples of
things usually found in houses in the old days. It was also explained to them
how the surrounding changed. They recorded their findings by taking
photographs and drawing in their inquiry journal.
The class read the story, Knots in the Counting Rope. It was about a grandpa
who told the story of how his grandson was born. They made a prediction on
what would most probably happen in the end of the story.
They also learned the letter sounds oo and ng. They were exposed to the
spelling of the words were, because, want, saw and put.
Maths
The students continued learning about time. They started exploring reading
time by half-hour. They played with the toy clock they made. They also used an
online clock in the Smartboard.

In connection with the first grade unit «When We Were Young», I presented
some music from when I was young. We sang “Puff, the Magic Dragon” and
danced some crazy dances from the 60’s including The Swim, The Freddie, The
Monkey and others.

Before the holiday students worked in small groups and started planning and
preparing the summative assessment for the simple machines unit. The
students decided what they want their compound machine to be able to do
and then think of which simple machines could work well together to get the
work done. This week students will start putting the design together to see
whether all parts of the compound machine work and what changes need to be
made. The class has created a rubric together to help them understand what is
required to create an excellent compound machine. There are three
assessment parts: planning and preparing \ compound machine\ presentation.
Students have been meeting in their literature circle groups, working on
Readingeggs, using the Ipads during their inquiry into pulleys and at the
beginning of the week they finished their experiments into the simple
machines. Please ask your child what machine they are creating and what it
can do, maybe they can start thinking about the materials they will need to
create the compound machine and bring these in to class by Wednesday,
March 13th. The students do not make the machine at home as this is a group
task to be done in class.

This week students will continue to work on solving math stories, practicing
multiplication and number facts to 20, and measuring tasks. Year 2 students
will focus on identifying objects that are approximate lengths, and then
measure with a ruler or meter stick to check their estimates. Year 3 students
will working on finding the perimeter and area of objects. The math stories will
include problems for both grades, in which students find the total distance or
difference between lengths. For example: If a red car rolls 60cm and the black
rolls 47cm, how far did both cars roll altogether? Or alternatively, we could ask
“How much further did the red car roll then the black car?”
Continuing our investigation into famous composers, we used percussion
instruments to play along with Tchaikovsky’s Russian Dance. We also began to
learn how to dance The Troika, a fast-moving Russian folk dance in which the
dancers imitate the prancing of horses pulling a sled or a carriage.

As there is space on this newsletter to inform about recommended home
inquiries, we will no longer be sending a homework grid each week.
Spelling words and new reading books will continue to be sent home each
Monday, and if your child doesn´t bring this home, please contact Ms. Antonia.
This week students can look into Rube Goldberg designs and perhaps try to
create their own Rube Goldberg design at home. Follow the netvibe link
posted here for more simple machines learning links.

We will be learning about the relation between multiplication and division this
week, so students can begin dividing objects at home into groups of either 2, 3,
5 or 10´s. Students will be learning to use the terms “sharing and dividing” and
that “repeated subtraction” is division. This short video shows an example of
divsion. http://youtu.be/gpI9Ro3OfY
The next link is for online multiplication games:

After Wednesday:
PY 2 students should practice measuring objects at home in cm and metres. PY
3 students can practice measuring objects in cm, mm and metres.
Each Monday, I only meet with the class for 3 periods and today we were busy
bees during these lessons. As there wasn´t much time to discuss our holiday
experiences today, I encourage students to write me a detailed account of one
specific experience. This can be delivered by Friday in handwritten form, or
sent via email.
Remember: Reading your child needs to read for 20 minutes each day.

Grade 4 & 5
Wrapping up the chemistry unit, we performed two more experiments to show
that temperature change can be an indicator of a chemical reaction. We further
studied the Periodic Table of the Elements and played Bingo to review learning.
The students also used the Internet to conduct research and then created
advertisements for a given element.
The students worked on the Friday presenting an experiment that they felt was
able to show an aspect of molecular arrangements, this there were expected to
discuss in detail. We have varying levels of success and we will be spending
some time reflecting on this process this week to consider how successful we
were.
Our next unit comes under the transdisciplinary theme , How we organize
ourselves which is an inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made
systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal
decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the
environment.
Entitled Time it is a look into how Time is a global concept that can be
measured and used in many ways.
We will be looking at
Understanding that we can make effective and balanced use of time and how
this has changed
The evolution of our understanding of time
Differences in how time is viewed and used in different cultures
Maths
Our new unit Time will allow us to explore concepts such as time zones and to
look at how we measure time and to perform calculations pertaining to time.
We will also be looking at time tables and data using time.
Music
I was very proud of the 4th & 5th graders during our music concert. Thank you
for coming and I hope you enjoyed the show!

Students are asked to keep a journal of when the get up and when the go to
bed. They are encouraged to have a functioning watch. I would like students
to create a list of where they see time in the home and in their daily lives
Please ensure that you read for a minimum of 30 minutes per day and take
advantage of the mathletics programme.

Students examined the origins of power, prosperity and poverty by making a
giant timeline highlighting the economic history of different regions of the
world. This timeline showed major economic events through the history of
man that have changed the course of our history such as the industrial
revolution, the great depression, the discovery of fossil fuels and various wars.
Students learned the difference between forms of government and economic
systems. We also worked on skits depicting the different forms of
government.
This week we will finish up our study of the history of wealth and poverty, our
timeline will give us more insight into why certain regions of the world are poor
while others are rich. During this exercise we will be discussing how cultural
differences have contributed to wealth and poverty. We will be writing an
essay ( five paragraph form) about the different ways people can be rich or
poor that have nothing to do with money or material wealth. Concurrently we
will be working on a lab report about the spread of disease in the third world
and some simple solutions that can stop this.

This week in Maths we will continue working on Algebra and patterns, we will
also briefly touch on some post-quiz review exercises. Please make sure your
child is using the Mathletics program for homework.
Following a discussion of percussion instruments, we viewed a video clip of
Brazilian children from a favela who made their own instruments from recycled
materials. The sound they were able to achieve from these instruments is truly
remarkable. We also began to learn the Boomwhacker piece “Whomp
Outloud”. This piece provides a new challenge because it contains many chords
and singing parts, too.
