SASOSA Newsletter November 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Trans Tasman Challenge This has been an annual contest between the Aussies & the Kiwis for Next Meeting several decades now. They come over here and we go over there in alternate years. Tues. 9th Dec. It was started around about 1970 (I’m running on my memory here – at the the MAAA website doesn’t give it a mention) as an R.C. Aerobatics Classic Jet Fighter contest mainly between NSWAA and the New Zealanders. Museum, Parafield. Understandably, the Eastern States have in most years provided most Start 6-30 pm, of the contestants from Australia, and also the venue when the Kiwis Brief meeting, come over here. Over the years the number of different classes of Sausage sizzle contest has increased, and it now includes a Scale Event. --------------SASOSA has successfully applied to the MAAA for the privilege of First Meeting running the 2009 event here in S.A., in early October 2009, at the Next Year Constellation Club field. The event will be flown under F4c Rules, and Sun. 18 Jan. the three contestants from Australia will be selected at the Nationals Noarlunga Scale Event at Cootamundra after Easter next March. To plan and run the event, SASOSA has provisionally appointed a committee consisting of Bob Fisher, Kurt Meyer, Steve Barker, Terry Cosh, and Kingsley Neumann. From the Meetings Society Shirt: Ron Ousman has obtained quotes and samples. → Members are advised they can purchase their own shirts (Short sleeve $19; long $23) at Uniforms Plus at Parafield - behind Bunnings. Then they will be given a free cloth badge on presentation of the shirt to a committee member. Ray Melton volunteered to give a short talk to the Gawler branch of the Kwinanians. Not only did the talk exceed the time limit by a considerable amount, but the club is keen to get Ray back to complete his talk. Well done Ray, from the Committee. (Tues) Classic Jets Barbecue Skyhawks Fun Fly 14th September Report by Roger Johnson With regular monotony this year, I have had to report that our planned event had been cancelled due to poor weather. However it is more than pleasing to be able to notify you that a function has finally been held. Once again strong winds threatened to put paid to another flying day but it was decided that the event would be held regardless. So, despite the forecast of 20kts winds, close to 20 members of both the Scale Society and Skyhawks gathered for a day of aeronautical enjoyment. Yes the wind blew – rather strong at times – but this did not prevent Graham Simpson from launching his intrepid DH60. Although tossed around a little, the DH60 did what any good aeroplane does – simply forgets its relationship to the ground and flies. Landing was a little difficult as Graham was under the impression that a fence ran along the eastern edge of the landing field and approached too high. This meant he was arriving too fast for landing. After a couple of attempts he worked out the angles and made a beautiful landing under difficult circumstances. Peter Lyas was the only other member who was brave enough to attempt the treacherous conditions. He arrived with what to me was a PC9 in USAF scheme. Not being up to date with all the newest aircraft, I soon discovered his new model to be a Raytheon Texan, which he flew on at least two occasions. The Texan was little challenged by the gusty conditions. Peter’s model was a refreshing change from the usual PC9/Tucano versions found in the magazines. Although the flying conditions were disappointing, it was excellent to have time to converse with friends, discussing building problems and sometimes working out solutions with them. Trevor Tyson brought along a beautiful model of a partially built Mitsubishi Zero. It was pointed out that a very close fitting cowl would give overheating issues later and Trevor could be shown why this would occur, and any number of solutions to the problem. And that, folks, is what scale modelling is all about. The day ended after we devoured a barbecue cooked courtesy of Ian Walker and Brian Gamble. De Havilland Day 5th October Photos by Steve Barker and Roger Johnson As with previous events this year, once again the weather forecast was not good. Fortunately the high wind forecast did not eventuate and everyone had a very good day. Flying commenced exactly at 10.00am and did not finish until well after the end of the official programme. Although nominally a De Havilland model aircraft day, all makes flew and were enjoyed by the crowd. Thanks must be given to the members of Constellation for preparing the field and also for the wonderful barbecue. Nobody went home dissatisfied. The DH Day will now become a bi-annually event to allow modellers more time to build their gems. Here’s the DH lineup, with Richard Mudge’s Albatross, Brian Gibbs’ Beaver, Steve Wilkins’ Comet; Tiger Moths by Terry Cosh, Kurt Meyer, Bill Kent & James Nolan; Chipmunks by Phil Dutton & Barry Howard; plus a few others unidentified. DH Day continued:The visiting full-size Chipmunk pilot, Jim Whally, was given the task of choosing the best D.H. model. Not being able to split the pair, he awarded the prize to jointly to Terry Cosh and Kurt Meyer for their respective Tiger Moths.
