Sept. 29-Oct. 3, 2014 Miss Fairchild’s First Grade Newsletter A note from Miss Fairchild… In education, October is often referred to as “Rocktober.” We’re well into the year, extra-curricular activities are in full swing, the seasons are changing, and… it happens to be the busiest month at school. So if you or your child are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. It’s always a challenge to push through, but we’ll survive! The Arboretum was a blast. There was so much to see and do. We visited the Children’s Garden, the famous pumpkin patch, and had a pumpkin life cycle lesson. Thanks to all of the parents who came! I am so proud of our students who participated in the Invention Convention. Our class has 9 inventors, more than any other class at Armstrong! Tuesday is Walk to School Day! Walk to school with your family, enjoy our beautiful community, and engage your student in meaningful conversation. Cross your fingers for perfect weather! Next Wednesday is parent conference day. The conferences are on a VERY tight schedule (20 minutes) to accommodate everyone. Visit armstrongpta.org to sign up if you haven’t already! The Bike Rodeo will be next Friday at 12:50pm. Students will be reviewing safety rules and expectations during PE. Sincerely, Miss Fairchild Important upcoming dates: October 7th – Walk to School Day October 8th – Conferences October 10th – Bike Rodeo (12:50) Math – finding the missing part of an addition problem; “part, part, whole” (addition) and “whole, part, part” (subtraction) Reading – buddy reading, singular v. plural nouns Phonics – ck, sh, ch, th, wh; pluralizing nouns Writing – capitalization and punctuation; letter sizing and formation Social Studies – symbols and mottos of Armstrong Science – plant life cycles, pumpkins, observation skills and tools; Invention Convention
