Our Feature Charity for the 2012 Priddis & Millarville Fair
At Rowan House Emergency Shelter, their goal is to provide women and their children a safe environment that nourishes feelings of self-worth, lends an opportunity for healing and personal growth,
and provides temporary housing while facilitating transition back into the community.
It is their intention to provide women and their children with services to foster coping skills that
lead to a life free of violence.
They serve the rural Foothills including the communities of Okotoks, High River, Black Diamond,
Turner Valley, Longview, Blackie, Nanton, Vulcan, Claresholm, and the surrounding areas. Women
can also access their services from any rural or urban centre. www.rowanhouseonline.org

Welcome
to the 105th Annual
Priddis & Millarville Fair!
The 2012 Priddis & Millarville Fair is rooted in over a hundred years of tradition. While recognizing the
current and future, it continues to showcase our agricultural roots.
I am continually amazed that our small community of both rural and urban neighbours continues to produce
the hundreds of volunteers, donors and exhibitors needed to plan, produce and carry out the activities of our
Priddis & Millarville Fair.
I am also amazed at the talent and effort put forth and showcased in the
thousands of entries. The continued increase in youth participation is
especially gratifying.
Good luck in 2012 and dust off your rural roots and cowboy boots. Come on
out and enjoy the eye popping exhibits, activities and fun. We look forward to
seeing you on the 18th of August!

A Few Llama Facts
Llamas, alpacas, guanacos, & vicunas are all members of the Camelid family. Today’s camelids originated on the central
plains of North America about 40 million years ago. From there, about 3 million years ago, llama-like animals dispersed
to South America. By the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 - 12,000 years ago, they were extinct in North
America.
Llamas were possibly domesticated from guanacos in the Andean highlands of Peru 4,000 - 5,000 years ago, and are
among the oldest domestic animals in the world. Primarily beasts of burden, they also provided native herdsman with
meat, fibre for clothing, hide for shelter, manure pellets for fuel, and offerings to their gods.
There are an estimated 7,000,000 llamas in South America and an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 llamas in Canada.
