The corner on which the Buttonwood Grill now stands was once part of the original William Penn land grant. In
1700, Penn sold 500 acres of what was to become the village of Lahaska to James Streater. Over the next century this
fertile swath was divided many times for family farms, homes, businesses, and a Friends meeting house for the growing
Quaker community. A local shopkeeper, Cyrus Betts, built the first structure on the lot in 1826, a one-story general store.
He sold the lot and store for $600 to Joseph Shaw. The spot was a prime stop for stage coaches along the Old York Road
so Shaw built a two story stone tavern to serve the many weary travelers on the busy highway between Philadelphia
and New York. Fast forward 120 years and numerous owners later; proprietors Matthew and Mary Hartigan decide to
name the historic hotel and tavern. They called it the Buttonwood Inn after the graceful buttonwood tree that greeted
guests at the door for nearly a century. In 1986, the Jamison family purchased the Buttonwood Inn with the promise to
carry on the tradition of warm and friendly Bucks County hospitality.
