INTENDED PURPOSE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
The Croatian Association of Railway Engineers, in co-operation with partners, is
organizing the 6th international symposium on railways with the aim of taking stock of the current
condition and perspectives of railway transport in Croatia and the surrounding region. Upon
Croatia's accession to the EU, its railway infrastructure became an integral part of the EU railway
network, which has major implications for the functioning of railway transport in Croatia.
At the end of last year, the European Commission has adopted a new infrastructure policy,
which served to establish a core transport network, i.e., nine transport corridors. The core network
should be completed until 2030 by means swift investment, and significant alterations and
improvements to the traffic links between the East and the West will be undertaken. Considering
the fact that Croatia is located on that route, there are ongoing investment works on our rail
network, and the same will have to be intensified and expanded to the entire region in order to
accomplish set goals.
Having in mind mentioned circumstances, as well as the current economic crisis, the
Symposium will initiate a discussion on real consequences of a new European transport policy for
Croatia and the region, as well as a possible impact that investment in railways could have on
positive developments in the economy and faster emergence from the recession.
Symposium conclusions and recommendations will be of good use to administrative bodies
of the EU, the Republic of Croatia and neighbouring countries, CER and international financial
institutions as guidelines for planning rail infrastructure investments.
The Symposium will also present an excellent opportunity for railway undertakings and rail
industry companies to present their plans, possibilities and up-to-date technical and technological
solutions
