2011 GREEK ORTHODOX
NATIONAL SCHOOLS EVENT
The 2011 Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event hosted by All Saints
Grammar, welcomed our sister schools from Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth to Sydney for
another year of healthy sporting competition and cultural and social activities. The event
consisted of three days of sporting competitions, including Basketball, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball
and Table Tennis, where each school team competed and demonstrated a plethora of unique
skills and talents as well as admirable sportsmanship.
On day one of the competition, a morning church service at All Saints Belmore commenced the
event where all students were blessed. This highlighted the significant cultural aspect that unites
all the schools. Following the opening ceremony, our Boys Soccer and Girls Netball teams played
very well after many strenuous training sessions, achieving excellent results and making our
school proud. On the second day, our Boys and Girls Basketball teams also played exceptionally
well, displaying a high level of skill, sportsmanship and team spirit. However, our boys narrowly
missed out on first place. The Table Tennis was also an enjoyable event that took place on the
second day, where our students participated to the best of their ability.
On the third and final day, we saw our students embarking on the challenges of Volleyball and
indoor Soccer. The exhibition of positive energy and determination was riveting to watch, with
the boys also narrowly missing out on first place. Congratulations to all our representative
athletes who displayed their utmost best and played fair and skilful games.
Our College had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Greek Spoken Arts Festival. Our
School was represented by Katherine Tsatsaklas, Chanel Taliai and Kosta Georgiadis in what
would become a memorable evening, filled with unforgettable performances from all
participating schools in both the Greek and Serbian languages.
Furthermore, All Saints Grammar hosted the Social Dinner, where their senior students catered
for the evening, serving a ravishing three-course meal. Along with All Saints’ inviting hospitality,
the evening granted the opportunity for students to socialise with other students from across the
nation and allowed them to celebrate their culture as was seen through the enjoyable Greek
dancing. We would also like to acknowledge the presence of Mr Hirakis, Principal of St Euphemia
College, Mr Panagopoulos, Principal of St George College of Adelaide, Mr Rekouniotis, Principal
of St John’s College of Melbourne, Ms Stefanou Haag, Principal of St Spyridon College, Mr Mark
Robertson, Principal of Oakleigh College Melbourne, and Mr Tsoutsas, Principal of All Saints
Grammar.
On behalf of the students of St Euphemia College, we would like to thank Ms Edhouse and Mr
Verghios, as well as all the coaches and students who assisted in making this an enjoyable and
successful event.
