Reporting Requirements
for U.S. Taxpayers Holding
Foreign Financial Assets
FATCA requires certain U.S. taxpayers who hold foreign financial
assets with an aggregate value of more than the reporting
threshold (at least $50,000) to report information about those
assets on Form 8938, which must be attached to the taxpayer’s
annual income tax return. The reporting threshold is higher for
certain individuals, including married taxpayers filing a joint
annual income tax return and certain taxpayers living in a foreign
country (see below).
As of January 2013, only individuals are required to report
their foreign financial assets. At a later time, a limited set of U.S.
domestic entities also may have to report their foreign financial
assets, but not for tax years starting before 2013. There are some
exceptions to the requirement that you file Form 8938. For
example, if you do not have to file a U.S. income tax return for the
year, then you do not have to file Form 8938, regardless of the
value of your specified foreign financial assets. Also, if you report
interests in foreign entities and certain foreign gifts on other
forms (such as Form 5471 for controlled foreign corporations
and Form 3520 for foreign trusts), then you may just list the
submitted forms on Form 8938, without repeating the details.
You may have to complete and file other reports about foreign assets,
such as FinCEN Form 114, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial
Accounts (FBAR) (formerly TD F 90-22.1), in addition to Form 8938.
Reporting Thresholds
Reporting thresholds vary based on whether you file a joint
income tax return or live abroad. If you are single or file separately
from your spouse, you must submit a Form 8938 if you have
more than $200,000 of specified foreign financial assets at the
end of the year and you live abroad; or more than $50,000, if you
live in the United States. If you file jointly with your spouse, these
thresholds double. You are considered to live abroad if you are a
U.S. citizen whose tax home is in a foreign country and you have
been present in a foreign country or countries for at least 330
days out of a consecutive 12-month period.
Taxpayers living abroad
You must file a Form 8938 if you must file an income tax return and:
You are married filing a joint income tax return and the
total value of your specified foreign financial assets is more than
$400,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $600,000
at any time during the year. These thresholds apply even if only
one spouse resides abroad. Married individuals who file a joint
income tax return for the tax year will file a single Form 8938
that reports all of the specified foreign financial assets in which
either spouse has an interest.
You are not a married person filing a joint income tax
return and the total value of your specified foreign financial
assets is more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or
more than $300,000 at any time during the year.

Expo Gate: The
Threshold Between
Milan And The
Universal Exposition
where
to find it?
Expo Gate is the first Pavilion in Milan that introduces the public
to the Universal Exposition. Located on Via Beltrami, it will be
inaugurated on Saturday 10 May and will be running for the entire
duration of the event. From this stage, Milan’s identity will be
brought to life as it interprets the theme of Expo Milano 2015:
Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. This meeting place in the city
centre is open to everyone, both to tourists and citizens of Milan. It is
a symbolic gateway to the world, to the themes and to the atmosphere
of the Universal Exposition, that is now a year from its inauguration.
With Expo
Gate, Milan
enters into
the spirit of
the Universal
Exposition...
A place of hospitality,
entertainment
and
information, Expo Gate is
situated right in the most
central position between
the
Sforzesco
Castle,
the epicentre of the 1906
Universal
Exposition
in
Milan, and Via Dante,
the strategic route that
welcomes the flags of the
144 participating countries
to Expo 2015. Its location
defines it as the threshold between Milan and the Expo, in the same
way that Milan has always been considered the gateway between Italy
and the world.
Expo Gate will be a platform for comparison, sharing and involvement
and it will be from here that Expo Milano 2015 is introduced and
narrated: it will not only be an info and ticket point but it will also
generate real experiences. From May 2014 it will host a programme of
multimedia and interdisciplinary events, curated by Caroline Corbetta,
that are focused on enhancing and developing cultural and productive
energies, both from Milan and Italy, with an international vocation.
The Expo Gate programme will become a collective, shared project
around the themes of the Universal Exposition, while a multimedia
exhibition will recount Expo Milano 2015 through visual storytelling.
Designed by Alessandro Scandurra/Scandurrastudio, Expo Gate is
characterized by a central, open square flanked by two large, openplan lattice structures at its sides. The structural transparency that
characterises these buildings symbolises the idea that the space is
available for the public for information, education and a variety of
experiences. Inspired by the criteria of sustainability as well as that
of being intelligent and cost-effective to build, it is a straightforward
structure with pure and simple lines, made with elementary
technologies that are easy to implement.
“With Expo Gate, Milan enters into the spirit of the Universal
Exposition - explained Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of Italian
Government for Expo Milano 2015 -. The info point will be the gateway
to the contents and challenges of the ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for
Life’ theme, a real reference point for tourists and citizens who want to
learn how to participate in this extraordinary event. But pay attention,
as this is not just a simple information point. Expo Gate is a very
welcoming, transparent space that is open to everyone, modular and
flexible. It will be the prime meeting place for Expo Milano 2015 where
appointments, meetings and events will be organised. Here you can
enjoy the climate and take in the atmosphere as you walk along the
exhibition’s main streets, the Decumanus and the Cardo, between the
Country Pavilions during the six months of the event. Now and for the
whole year, all this is at the heart of the city”.

Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 150C. Grease
and line a 20cm cake tin.
2. Cut the cherries into quarters, put
in a sieve and rinse under running
water. Drain well then dry.
3. Place the cherries in a bowl with
the butter, sugar, eggs, self-raising
flour, sultanas, currants, candied
peel, lemon zest and mixed spice
and beat well until thoroughly
mixed. Pour half the mixture into the
prepared tin.
4. Take 1/3 of the marzipan and roll it
out to a circle the size of the tin. Then
place on top of the cake mixture.
Spoon remaining cake mixture on top
and level the surface.
5. Bake in the pre-heated oven for
about 2½ hours, or until well risen,
evenly brown and firm to the touch.
Cover with aluminium foil after
one hour if the top is browning too
quickly. Leave to cool in the tin for
10 minutes then turn out, peel off the
parchment and finish cooling on a
wire rack.
6. When the cake is cool, brush
the top with a little warmed apricot
jam and roll out half the remaining
marzipan to fit the top. Press firmly
on the top and crimp the edges to
decorate. Mark a criss-cross pattern
on the marzipan with a sharp knife.
Form the remaining marzipan into
11 balls.
7. Brush the marzipan with beaten
egg and arrange the marzipan balls
around the edge of the cake. Brush
the tops of the balls with beaten egg
and then carefully place the cake
under a hot grill until the top is lightly
toasted.
