It is with great honor and pleasure
that I assume the role of U.S.
Consul General in Milan. It is an
enviable assignment, and — I
look forward to meeting people
and working together for the
benefit of Americans, Italians, and
our very full common agenda.
The timing of my assignment
could not be better. Next year,
the eyes of the world will be on
Milan Expo 2015, a World’s Fair
dedicated to the vital theme of sustainably feeding the planet.
Secretary of State Kerry sent me here to help coordinate with our
private sector partners who are creating the USA Pavilion that
will provide an unforgettable experience for visitors, balancing
the serious themes of food security and feeding the planet with
stories of ingenious and entertaining innovation. Of course,
they will also make things delicious, showcasing traditional and
cutting-edge American cuisine (and serving some of this food
from food trucks, a distinctly American touch). I can’t think of a
better place to host such an event.
I expect to spend a lot of time outside Milan as well, getting to
know the people throughout U.S. Consulate General Milan’s
vast district in northern Italy. My wife, Solveig, also a member
of the Foreign Service, serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome,
as Ambassador John Phillips’ Executive Assistant, so we will be
frequent commuters on the Freccia Rossa!!
I arrive as the first Ambassador
to be appointed Consul General
in Milan — another indication of
the high stature with which the
U.S. Government holds Milan,
not only because of the Expo,
but also because of the industry
and trade opportunities here
in the north. The ongoing
Transatlantic
Trade
and
Investment Partnership (TTIP)
negotiations between the EU
and the US are an encouraging
sign that positive change is in
the air. TTIP will also be a great
opportunity to expand our ties
with Italy and a big part of our
agenda here.
I look
forward to
meeting
people and
working
together for
the benefit of
Americans,
Italians...
Prior to Milan, I most recently served as the Deputy Assistant
Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs focused
on the Balkans, Central Europe, and Holocaust Issues. From
2008 to 2011, I was the U.S. Ambassador to Macedonia. Earlier
I served directly under two Secretaries of State — Madeleine
Albright and Colin Powell — as the Deputy State Department
Spokesman/Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs.
It was in that role that I found myself standing at the lectern
on September 11, 2001, faced with the challenge of giving
the first U.S. Government press briefing following the 9/11
attacks. I reflected on this recently, as we commemorated the
13th anniversary. Speaking to an audience in Vicenza, I was
reminded again of Italy’s strong support — and the deep
friendship between our two countries.
I have also served twice in Hungary, where I was lucky enough to
meet Solveig. We have served together in Iraq and Washington,
DC. I’ve lived in many places, but consider Washington and New
York to be home, although I also spend a lot of time in Solveig’s
home state of Minnesota and Oregon, where we both have family.
I am excited for the months and years ahead. I am confident that
together we will do great things.
