“Let the building begin,” proclaimed U.S. Ambassador to Italy John Phillips,
and with that, the USA Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015 broke ground.
The USA Pavilion marks a new magnet, within Expo 2015, for conversation
and collaboration to confront global food challenges. On July 16, 2014,
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry hosted simultaneous receptions in
Washington D.C. and Milan, via satellite, to celebrate the groundbreaking
for the USA Pavilion at the next world’s fair, which is expected to attract 20
million visitors from May 1st through October 31st next year.
“Innovation is the lifeblood of the United States, and as a global leader
in advancing food security, we are eager to seize the opportunity to get
involved in the Expo in a major way,” said U.S. State Secretary John Kerry
during the reception, which was attended by former U.S. Ambassador to
Italy David Thorne, incoming Milan Consul General Philip Reeker, and
USA Pavilion partners, sponsors and supporters.

and events, ranging from interactive exhibits and tastings to salons,
workshops and innovation accelerators, created by contributions from
private donors and partners.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with a great panel of sponsors to address
food issues on an international stage. The USA Pavilion is committed to
representing the diversity of the USA and our collective commitment to
solving the challenges of feeding the planet. We invite others to join us,”
said Jerry Giaquinta, Representative of the Friends of the USA Pavilion
Milano 2015.
The Friends organization - a collaboration between the James Beard
Foundation and the International Culinary Center, in association with
the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy - is seeking partners to

the challenges of feeding the planet.

States Consulate General in Milan and

Also in July, the groundbreaking
ceremony for the USA Pavilion at Expo
2015 took place under the captive
lens of numerous photographers and
cameramen as U.S. Ambassador John R.
Philips and the highest representatives of
the local institutions came together for this
very important event. Through live feed
connection from Washington D.C., U.S.
Secretary of State, John Kerry delivered
a compelling address in favor of U.S.
involvement in Milan’s Expo (see p. 3).

treat originated from the Girls Scouts
in 1927 and has become of one
America’s classic must-make during
camping trips.
Ingredients
(Serves 6)
•6 whole graham crackers
•A bag of marshmallows
•1 milk chocolate bar
Method
Split graham cracker into 2 halves.
On top of graham cracker squares
place marshmallow(s). Place under
broiler (or by open camp fire) for a
few seconds until toasty. Remove
and place a piece of chocolate on top
of marshmallow. The heat from the
marshmallow will melt the chocolate.
Place other ½ of graham cracker on
top. Repeat and enjoy s’more!
