A suicide car bomb exploded at a police checkpoint guarding Kadhimiyah, a neighbourhood in northwestern Baghdad that is home to one of the holiest shrines. A police colonel said at least 10 people were killed and 31 wounded, a toll confirmed by a medical source. Farther west, in the district of Shoala, a car bomb went off in a busy commercial street, killing at least 24 people and wounding another 23, a medical source said. There were conflicting reports as to whether the carnage in Shoala might have been caused by two consecutive explosions, but a source at the interior ministry gave a similar toll. On Thursday, at least 12 people died in another car bomb attack on the sprawling neighbourhood of Sadr City. Sunday, October 12, 2014 Diploma woes TWO-YEAR COURSE, BUT UNENDING TESTS Mohammed Zafran/DTNN Manama A person, who received his diploma certificate from a private institution, is now struggling to get it accredited. Interestingly, it took the Indian national Vijay Kurien almost 16 years to get the diploma programme certificate. Mr. Kurien enrolled the diploma programme at the National Institute of Information TechnologyВ BahrainВ (NIIT) in 1998. He had also paid more than BD1000 for the course. Moreover, he passed the exams in 2000 in the first attempt itself. But it was in 2012 when he finally received the diploma certificate. Since NIIT Bahrain was closed down in 2008, he had to collect the certificate from its headquarters in India.В But his woes did not end here. After receiving the certificate in 2012, he promptly updated his CV, hoping that the diploma certificate would brighten his prospect of getting a better job. But three companies rejected his certificate due to accreditation issues. Speaking to DT News over the phone from India, he said, вЂњI came to know from three organisations, which wanted to hire me, that the certificate cannot be validated and thatвЂ™s why I could not get into these prestigious companies.вЂќ Mr. Kurien said that he does not want to blame the institution for the obstacles he faced, instead he wants to get his certificate validated. вЂњThe damage has already been done. There is no point in fighting against them. I just want to get my certificate approved. I am only looking towards the future,вЂќ he said. He added that he had been constantly trying to get in touch with the institutionвЂ™s headquarters in India through phone and email but there were no responses until now. вЂњThey acknowledged that I am a legitimate student of the institution and that I had passed the exams. But little did he realise the KingdomвЂ™s smart detectives would pounce on him within 24 hours! T.S.Sreenivasa Raghavan/DTNN T he cops at Ministry of Interior (MOI) recently received an alert about a Bangladeshi National found dead inside a flat at an apartment complex located at Manama, as reported in Al Amn. On receipt of the alert, the cops wasting no time rushed to the spot and found that the crime site was littered with articles. They could also see bloodstains on the floor, wall and refrigerator. The crime scene, which presented a higgledy-piggledy picture besides the number of stab injuries on the victims body pointed to a violent fight and fisticuff between the victim and his killer. Excepting the mobile phone the other valuables, which belonged to the victim were intact which prompted the police to conclude that the motive behind the coldblooded murder was not theft. The case appeared to be a mystery as the police realised that the soft-spoken and amiable victim identified as Liton had no known enemies or disputes with anyone. Yet, he had been killed brutally! So, what could have gone wrong? Director, Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) Colonel Abdulazziz Al-Rumaihi told Al-Amn that the 34-year-old victim had been working in Bahrain for several years. вЂњHe lived alone here. His wife and family live back home,вЂќ he added. According to the colonel, the police immediately questioned the victimвЂ™s neighbours. The police also interrogated victimвЂ™s the friends and colleagues from his home country who used to visit him frequently. вЂњOne of his friends, Ragoul, looked worried, scared and nervous and we could see that he was making a desperate attempt to appear calm. Later, he calmed down and said he hailed from the same of city of the victimвЂќ, said Abdulazziz. Ragoul and Liton were close friends and they even used to carry messages from their families back home for each other.В As Ragoul explained, the cops suddenly questioned him the minor scratches on his hands and chest. As a confused and shocked Ragoul fumbled for a convincing explanation, the cops posed another loaded question about his visit to the victimвЂ™s flat on the day of the crime. вЂњBut he denied seeing the victim that day. But, we checked his mobile phone and found, Ragoul had received a call from the victim just before the crime occurred. The victimвЂ™s number was recognised by other friendsвЂќ, confirmed Abdulazziz. The injuries, victimвЂ™s phone number on his mobile reinforced the doubts that Ragoul was involved in the crime, especially, after some common friends revealed that Ragoul and the victim often squabbled. вЂњThe friends said Ragoul interfered in the victimвЂ™s family affairs. The victim had even told them that he had fought with Ragoul a few days before the episode,вЂќ Abdulazziz explained. With this, the cops confronted Ragoul and took him to the crime scene where he buckled under pressure confessed to the crime. Ragoul told the police that the victim had called him to his place to discuss some important matter. The killer suspected that there was some mysterious reason behind the call, especially, after the victim insisted that he should not be late. His suspicion came true when Liton received him very coldly. The victim took out a paper from his pocket containing some phone numbers from his home country and asked Ragoul if he knew any of them.В He identified the phone number of the victimвЂ™s wife. This made the victim angry. The victim then accused him of making advances towards his wife and said she had complained about the killerвЂ™s bad intentions as he had made many international calls to her number. вЂњThe victim became jealous when Ragoul said that the victimвЂ™s wife was the one who called him and not the other way round,вЂќ Abdulazziz disclosed. The two started insulting each other, which led to fisticuff. Suddenly, the victim grabbed a knife kept under his pillow but Ragoul managed to knock it off his hand, grabbed it and attacked the victim who fell down. Ragoul stabbed Liton 50 times all over his body! вЂњAfter the killing, Ragoul stole his mobile phone and one dinar he found in the victimвЂ™s wallet and went to buy a meal with the stolen dinar. According to court files, the defendant, an electrical technician, was caught redhanded in a sting operation after an officer in plain clothes had lured him into selling the illegal drugs. Prosecutors said that the defendant was delivering the marijuana on his bike. During questioning, he alleged that a friend had asked him to hand over a bag to the officer, stating that he did not know that there were drugs inside it. Police discovered a big supply of marijuana stuffed cigarettes when they inspected his accommodation, court files read. Moreover, judges at the High Criminal Court also imposed a BD5000 fine on the man, and also ordered for his expulsion once he completes his jail time. The machine named вЂ�Encore,вЂ™ the first-of-its-kind, is a product of Gilbarco Veeder Root, a technology company, and has been introduced at the Estiqlal petrol bunk in Bahrain. вЂњThe machine accepts every types of cards. Sadeem cards of Bapco are also accepted for fuelling. Even though, the machine has been introduced in US, it is first time that it is being introduced in Bahrain,вЂќ machine technician, Ranjith Singh said. Moreover, the machine need not be manned by any staff. The customer himself can insert the card and enter the amount for fuelling the vehicle. He continues to look for additional identities! Why am I harping on the issue of identity now? I have to be candid here and I have no hesitation to say that my answer is in the affirmative. Otherwise, how would you account for the recent controversy revolving around the Kali-fication of Barbie? Before dwelling into the issue further, we need to understand the meaning of both Kali and Barbie. Hindus venerate Kali вЂ“ the consort of Lord S h i v a and the Goddess o f Destruction. The word Kali, in fact, comes from Sanskrit, which literally means the black one. The origin of Kali could also be traced to kal, again in Sanskrit, meaning, time: the destroyer. Hence, the Goddess is aptly portrayed as a black-skinned and blood-smeared wearing a necklace of skulls and a girdle of snakes! If Kali symbolises the triumph of good over evil, Barbie is a brand of doll made by Mattel representing a slim, shapely young woman, especially one with blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin. When used as noun Barbie means, especially a young woman, perceived as blandly attractive and vacuous. It is here the Kali-fication of Barbie fuelled all the brouhaha in the world anguishing innumerable Barbie fans and angering devout Hindus. CEO: The support we got from the supreme committee under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa was excellent; we report to them and the ministry. We created working groups that were there in Bahrain since day one. We have three layers of working groups which include Undersecretaries, Directors and in director level, we have IT and business, and finally the technical people. People out there in the front, we have committees with them, we consult with them, we try to engage them, we made them part of the change management. And, we gave education, training and DT News: You have to keep running? CEO: Of course, of course. We have to improve our ranking and the maturity levels. That requires a lot of effort. organised workshops for the employees. DT News: Are all these people from different departments? CEO: Yes, hundreds of government employees are working for eGovernment, but from different departments. That was a challenge. DT News: What is your team size?
