As we observe Respect Life Month, we hear this passage from St. Matthew’s Gospel, inviting us to evaluate the degree to which we recognize the limits of our allegiance to any authority other than God. Jesus’ canny reply to an insincere group of Pharisees looking to trap Him in seditious speech or behavior, serves to challenge them instead: how do they distinguish what they properly owe the Roman authorities before they could be accused of compromising their allegiance to the God of Israel? Jesus unmasks their hypocrisy when seeming to compliment Him on his perceived disregard for human opinion. He points out that things do not always lend themselves to quick, either/ or absolutes: there are legitimate claims on the part of “Caesar” (the civil authority or �state’) requiring respect and cooperation from citizens; but there are limits to those claims as well, when a �higher law’ or Authority must take precedence - the law of God. Knowing how to distinguish between them is not always easy. Jesus is rightly concerned with a correct understanding of God’s demands on the human conscience. “Caesar”, in many guises and forms, must keep within the bounds of what reasonably pertains to good order in this world’s affairs. But when “Caesar” acts in ways contrary to God’s law, demanding that a person compromise his or her conscience, “Caesar” must be resisted, strenuously and with full acceptance of the consequences. Today we see blatant and savage examples of “Caesar’s” presumption in the persecution by ISIS of Christians and other religious minorities in areas of the Middle East, often with the direst outcomes. But we, in our �enlightened’ society, also face challenges from “Caesar”. Though not generally yet from government (despite ominous encroachment on the full and free exercise of religion), our challenges come from a socio-cultural mindset that has effectively pushed God and consideration of His law out of the discussion in many areas of human behavior and public policy. Jesus’ standard of judgment is clearly relevant: “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar” nothing less, but nothing more - “and to God what belongs to God.” This weekend we observe Mission Sunday, an opportunity to share, by prayer and material support, in the Church’s effort to sustain works of evangelization and charity to bring the light of Christ’s Gospel to places where it may yet be unknown, and to assist communities without the resources to pursue that task effectively. Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to be missionaries in different ways: being faithful to our Christian identity, Alive as the Body of Christ, in what we say and do is a front-line participation in spreading the Good News of Jesus. It supports the work of missionaries by giving them something to point to, as examples of how the Gospel enlivens and sustains the human spirit. Tim Shugrue Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK… “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21) Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ AS FLU SEASON APPROACHES... While local pharmacies are offering flu shots in advance of the coming winter, and with the much-publicized concern about the spread of serious viruses, some parishioners have expressed anxiety about risks associated with hand-shaking, as in the opening introductions at Mass or at the Sign of Peace. In an effort to reduce this anxiety, we will place hand sanitizer on the tables flanking the doors at the church entries, for use as an extra precaution. And it is important to repeat that anyone who feels ill or “not quite right” or is coughing or sneezing, should refrain from partaking of the Precious Blood at Communion. Please do not interpret a fellow worshipper’s reluctance to shake hands as a personal affront: it may simply be a matter of a person’s feeling vulnerable. A friendly nod or smile can convey the proper attitude of mutual respect and affection. Their names will be read during the Liturgy for the Commemoration of All Souls. (It will be the Sunday Liturgy). Friends and relatives of those who have died will be invited to this special liturgy and ALL members of the parish are encouraged to attend. The pictures of all parishioners who have died in the past year will be placed on a Wall of Remembrance in the main lobby of the church. A Book of Remembrance will be placed in the lobby also in which you can record your loved ones’ names. During the Octave of All Souls Day, we will continue to pray for all our deceased family members and parishioners. There are two types of membership -active and auxiliary. Active members meet weekly and perform two hours of service each week assisting the Pastor in the needs of the parish community, e.g., visiting nursing homes and taking the Eucharist to the sick and aged. Auxiliaries, or praying members, supply prayer power needed for the active work of the Legion. It requires daily recitation of the Rosary and the Legion prayers.
