It promises to be a great day for socialising and fundraising! Cari Genitori, Bravissimi tutti! What a great effort with our second school Walkathon. A big thank you to all our students and families who raised a total of $5300. This will be put towards re-furbishing our hall stage with new curtains and a press button drop down screen. For every $5 raised, a student’s name went into the draw at yesterday’s assembly. Please find the list of the lucky prize winners later in this newsletter. Special mention must be made of the three students who raised the most funds: Thor and Freyja B-R in the junior school and Maddie N in the upper grades. An amazing effort to seek so many sponsors. Grazie mille ragazzi! Securing our school boundaries There’s been lots of action in the vicinity of our hall this week thanks to finally receiving approval from our Education and Training Directorate to have a security/safety fence installed along the area bordering Loftus St. It is also being extended along the canal right up to the edge of the library. This will make a big difference to how our school and Aeoncademy can use this green area’ off the hall and will minimize any potential student accidents in such close proximity to Loftus St and the canal. We are also putting in a Stage 2 fencing submission to secure the school in the area around the car park off Mueller St and the old basketball courts. As with the first submission, we will be seeking endorsement from the school Board and P&C before submitting this second request. SCHOOL BOARD Deb Hicks (Board Chair) Phone: 0412 237 519 Email: [email protected] P&C Gudrun Northrup (President) Phone: 0418 885 223 [email protected] PRINCIPAL Lea Chapuis (Principal) Phone: 6142 3250 Email: [email protected] Student Education Pack letter This week you will receive a letter (hard copy in your child’s bag, email and on the website) explaining how you can pay for your child’s educational pack (workbooks and stationery) for 2015. Please note that payment is sought by Monday 8 December to enable our school to make a bulk order before the end of the year and ensure delivery before the new school year. We seek your strong support and commitment to full and early payment as a more efficient way of providing for your child’s stationery/workbook needs in 2015. Payment details can be found at the bottom of the letter. Parking issues Unfortunately some of our parents who may not always use the school oval car park (off MacGillivray Street) or the tennis car park off Mueller Street are receiving infringement notices from the Road Traffic Authority. The RTA considers the area along MacGillivray Street (adjacent to the canal) to be a nature strip’ and as such, it is considered illegal to park there. Apparently this is the result of residents’ complaints and the RTA is therefore obliged to follow through, even if parents are picking up children from preschool or Montessori within school hours. This issue will be raised with the school Board tonight but in the meantime, I encourage families to think carefully about when and how they park and to check the following websites for more information: http://www.actmapi.act.gov.au/home.html and for parking on the roadside: http://www.rego.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/603483/Parking-on-the-roadside-fact-sheet.pdf ETD Director-General visit On Tuesday, it was a privilege to host a visit by our Director-General of Education and Training, Diane Joseph. Ms Joseph was keen to see the results of both stages of the Capital Works and to visit classrooms and see our students in action. She was most impressed with the level of engagement, quality work and explanations of their learning demonstrated by our students. A big thank you to our teachers and students who prepared so well for the visit and who amazed our DG with their bilingual prowess! Please come and join us and have a voice in how your hard earned fund raising funds are expended in supporting your children and the school environment. We recently received correspondence from Ms Joy Burch, ACT Minister for Education and Training regarding an Australian-first project to help parents get more involved with their children's school. Ms Burch has been meeting with various school communities across the ACT and requested the opportunity to attend a Yarralumla Primary school P&C meeting to engage with the community regarding their thoughts on effective learning environments, quality teaching and positive parental engagement. I look forward to a robust and constructive engagement with our school community. TERM 4 Week 4 Week 6 Week 8 Week 10 Host 1/2 (Lynden & Katherine) 4/5/6 + SLSU 5/6 (or 4/5) No assembly Edie looks at Isabella’s butterflies. Julie Dodd and Leony Kowald Year 3/4 Montessori Many Montessori parents spent Saturday cleaning up the garden and making items for the craft stall for the upcoming fete on November 8th. The garden is looking particularly colourful at the moment with many spring flowers in bloom. We have been talking about spring and garden creatures and Red Group had to find and bring in a small creature from their garden at home for news this week. We had a wide variety brought in including ants, butterflies, moths, aphids, snails, slugs, compost worms, an inchworm, blowflies, slaters and a devil’s coach horse nymph. A big welcome back to our families returning from their school trip to Italy. Everyone has had a positive experience and many great stories to share. What a fabulous opportunity. A big thank you to maestra Sabrina Beber for stepping into the Italian role so competently while maestra Brancato is away. The warmer weather is starting to arrive, and we ask parents to ensure that the students all have a sun smart hat at school each day with names clearly written. Teachers often find hats labelled with initials, which is often not very helpful to identify the owner. It would be helpful also to label jumpers clearly as these are often discarded by lunchtime and are left lying around. There have been a number of notes sent home over the last few weeks. These include the new process for student educational packs, and swim and survive notes. Please see the front office or send an e-mail if you need another note sent home. Hamish shows his inchworm. Our integrated inquiry unit continues this term around convicts and the colonisation of Australia. Our shared reading book, Tom Appleby, is an excellent insight into life as a chimney sweep, convict and early life in Australia. Students are writing a journal based on their convict character and reflecting on how different and difficult life must have been compared with their own. Part of creating their journals includes making covers, and publishing journal entries on old looking paper. We have made some here at school, but most students need more and I am asking for help with this project by making their own at home. We used weak coffee or tea to create a yellowish look, and some students chose to burn the edges of the paper. I have stressed the importance of adult help if they decide to burn the edges. We have also discussed finding suitable materials from home if they want to create a cover for their finished journal. These could be fabric to cover hard cardboard, old woven placemats, or pieces of material such as soft leather. Thanks in advance for your help in sourcing these materials. maestre Couch e Brancato Eliotropio Everyone has settled back in easily this term. We have been busy working on our powerpoint and ipad presentations, whereby the children are all telling their story. This is our culminating task following the previous learning last term in history. We have been exploring Who or What is in my past? Where did my family originate from? How did Australians live in the past? How did people live in other places and what have we learned from our past? In investigating these questions, the students have been talking to family members, gathering memories, articles and artefacts from their past and sharing them with the class. We have made posters about our country of origin, ebooks about our memories and now about our story. The children will be showcasing these in Week 5 and 6 for their peers. This week the students enjoyed hands on measurement activities through constructing a square meter as a group and then problem solving how to accurately measure spaces around the school. It was great to see the team work, problem solving, suggestions and modifications happening within each group to successfully achieve this. Please continue to encourage your child to have their homework books in on Fridays, so that they are able to paste in the following week’s homework, to avoid lost work and to help them establish routines. Have a great week, maestra Stewart Library Welcome, back to the final term of the 2014 school year. Here we are already in week 3 and the calendar of events lined up to end the school year look impressive. In the library there are three major events that will be occurring and need to be marked in your diary. They are: 1. Book Fair - 17th November to 21st November in the library, before and after school. 2. Library closes for borrowing – 28th November, this is to allow all books to be returned by week 9. 3. Library closes for stocktake – the library will not be open to students during week 9 and week 10 of this term to allow a full stocktake of the library and its resources to be undertaken; this is also when home readers will cease to be available. This term in the library, the students in Kindy to year 2 will be focusing on Library borrowing skills and becoming independent borrowers. The aim is for the students to work towards earning their OLIVER licence (OLIVER is the name of the library data base). Kindy will earn a bronze, Year 1 a silver and Year 2 a gold licence as they will be required to be able to complete different tasks within the library in readiness for the move to a higher grade. In year 3/4 we are studying the Aboriginal resistance to colonisation and what resistance can look like, then and today. How do they as students resist, why do we resist and what is the role of resistance? Then they reflect this back in history to the colonisation and Aboriginal resistance. We are also reading the book Nanberry: Black Brother White’ by Jackie French. Year 4/5/6 are working on their research skills by undertaking the task of producing a pamphlet that either presents a Famous Australian, Commonwealth Country or 18th Century Explorer. We are using a step by step skill building process, plus looking at referencing, question writing and clear answers. In year 4/5 and 5/6 we are researching immigration through the Snowy Mountains Hydro system - one of the most multicultural projects ever undertaken in Australia. We are exploring waves of immigration and the events that led to this occurrence through reading the book Snowy: The Diary of Eva Fischer: Cabramurra 1958-1959’ by Siobhan McHugh. Until next time, remember to keep reading to your children, with your children and for your own enjoyment. Ciao Maestra Jayne PS: There will be two competitions starting next week, one focused on the book fair and the other our writing competition. The students will get details in library next week.
