I needed a break, so I did the Medicine Hat show again. Two more of our members also thought the same. Terry Lee and Al Olson also had tables this year. The show is guns and antiques. About 70% antique tables, the balance guns. There is also a military surplus clothing vendor attending. He has the equivalent of about 12 tables in space. He unloads a truck with big boxes on pallets using a jack. The items are not budget priced and I’ve never seen anyone buying the clothing, but he must sell some of the stuff to afford all of that space. Again this year they had a good crowd through. I found sales a little less than last year. I only moved 7 guns, last year 10. Last year I sold 4 clip magazines. This year on Sunday that was my main sale. One customer bought $275 worth! Al Olson told me he sold enough to pay expenses. I spoke to Terry Lee later. He told me right at the end he did very well. My table neighbor sold all of his shotguns plus an old antique Swiss jager rifle (for big bucks) so he was really pleased. I didn’t hear how any of the antique people made out. There was one just beside my row that I could remember from last year, because he had helmets and bayonets at outrageous prices. Well, he had the same items, with the same big prices as last year! I don’t know how many of you people know Larry Starchuck of Cold Lake, Alberta. I hadn’t seen him in Kamloops this spring but was sure he would have his tables here. He wasn’t here and I learned he has been very ill for some months, losing a great deal of weight. The good news is, he has started to do some of the smaller shows again that are closer to home. I was talking with one of the two fellows who sponsor the show. He said they had been doing it for 7 or 8 years now and it was finally quite successful. So the city of Medicine Hat has told them now that it’s so well attended, the city is going to also charge them a business tax of over $4000! They are very worried because they don’t make that much profit. Of course there isn’t a facility as large as that one available in the city. How’s that for cooperation? This may spell the end to that show. I forgot to mention they pay more rent than we pay for double the space at Heritage Park. Here is a little bit of good news from CSSA. A small change in firearms regulations and a thanks from CSSA to the Government. As we are represented by CSSA and NFA I feel we are included in that thanks. Harper Government announces common sense firearms measures for law-abiding firearms owners October 7, 2014 – Ottawa – Public Safety Canada Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, introduced the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. This Bill meets the Government’s objective to cut red tape for law-abiding firearms owners and provide safe and simple firearms policies. Changes to the Criminal Code and the classifications regime would enable the Government to take steps to ensure the rights of lawful firearms owners are respected. Quick Facts The amendments to the Firearms Act and Criminal Code would: - Create a six-month grace period at the end of the fire-year licence period to stop people from immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork delays around license renewals; - Streamline the licensing system by eliminating the Possession Only Licence (POL) and converting all existing POLs to Possession and Acquisition Licences (PALs); - Make classroom participation in firearms safety training mandatory for first-time licence applicants; - Amend the Criminal Code to strengthen the provisions relating to orders prohibiting the possession of firearms where a person is convicted of an offence involving domestic violence; - End needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making them a condition of a licence for certain routine and lawful activities; - Provide for the discretionary authority of Chief Firearms Officers to be subject to limit by regulation; - Authorize firearms import information sharing when restricted and prohibited firearms are imported into Canada by businesses; and, - Allow the Government to have the final say on classification decision, following the receipt of independent expert advice. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The CSSA is the voice of the sport shooter and firearms enthusiast in Canada. Our national membership supports and promotes Canada’s firearms heritage, traditional target shooting competition, modern action shooting sports, hunting, and archery. We support and sponsor competitions and youth programs that promote these Canadian heritage activities. First, as always, I had a very fine time. For several social reasons. First, my daughter, Rhonna came in and helped go around to get reservations for the November 15-16 show. I also had lots of short and long visits with a whole bunch of folks. I also got a big hug from a very pretty girl whom I have watched grow up from she was about 4 years old. My sales were dismal! I haven’t had a show that bad for about 30 years. Nothing heavy sold! I brought three very nice guns that no one even looked at. My best transaction was the three shotgun barrels I had priced at FREE. They all found new homes. We had a good crowd coming through the door. We also had two new members who had tables. Dave was the only person I asked about sales. He told me he did okay and he did sell a couple of guns. I didn’t see very many leaving the building though. I saw a lot of ammunition being trucked out by had trucks. An important fact, it was Dave Worfolk’s birthday. At the meeting we had after the show, the directors wanted me to explain the 2015 show scenario. Art and I spent two weeks driving around the Valley looking for places that could handle our needs for shows. We also made even more phone calls, to no avail! So here is where it sits as of now. We have signed a contract with the city of Chilliwack for 2015 to have our one-day shows at the Evergreen Hall, 9291 Corbould Street at Spadina. I’ve told you the hall details last month. Next month I’ll be able to tell you all of the dates starting with the January show. I believe now the city is negotiating our dates with other renters to help us get closer to the dates we’ve asked for. I think we will find some of our shows might be held on Saturdays. Now don’t forget next month, November 15-16 will not only be a wonderful gun show but also a wonderful breakfast on Sunday morning. I’ve asked the Lions Club to do their magic for our breakfast again this year. So even if sales were slow on Saturday, you can just forget it and dig into a gourmet breakfast. I think you all remember the hours. Saturday, 8.30-3; Sunday 8.30-1 p.m. As usual there will be no Friday set up but I’ll be there early Saturday. You can call Dave, 604.880.4706 or me at 604.522.3609 for any information you require. Now boys and girls, here is the news everyone seems to have been waiting for. The contract is signed and complete for the 2015 show dates at the Evergreen Hall in Chilliwack. Here they are: January 11, February 8, April 19, May 24, June 21, July 12, August 9, September 20, October 4, November 14-15, and December 6. Those are the dates and by the December show in Burnaby on the 14th, I’ll have new calendar cards on the Club table. The March 7-8, 2015 show will again be held at the Heritage Park location. Also at the November 15-16 show in Burnaby, Dawn will start taking names for permanent table holders. At this time I’m not sure how the price is going to be. All we’ll do is take names of members who will attend EVERY show. By December we will have some idea of table rental. We know it’s going up because the rent is going to be more for the larger floor area. I’m quite excited about our move to Chilliwack, even though it increases my travel time from 10 minutes to 1 hour. On the plus side, I don’t have to arrive until 6 a.m., rather than now at 5 a.m. I almost forgot, Art has contacted the local Lions Club at Evergreen and they are happy to provide lunch service for our shows. Well, boys and girls, I think that’s all the news I have for you at present. Until next time, be good to each other.
