Over the past five years, Shipping & the Law has
developed a reputation as Italy’s leading maritime industry conference. This unique event brings together
leading figures from around the world to debate and discuss the most important issues in the sector. As always,
there will be speakers and panelist of the highest caliber: owners, shipbuilders, bankers, lawyers, international arbitrators, insurance brokers, and other shipping
professionals.

The full day conference will take place on the 8th October and is
composed of four sessions.
During the opening session, ‘Global Challenges and Strategic
Decisions in the Current Shipping Markets’, chaired by Richard Fulford-Smith and France­sco Lauro, leading shipping personalities, Emanuele Grimaldi, John C. Lyras, Jeffrey Prior, Emanuele Lauro, Vincenzo
Petrone, and Ugo Salerno will discuss the key issues, global challenges,
and strategic decisions that characterize the current phase of shipping
markets and the global economy.
Closing addresses will be given by Peppino D’Amato, Past Chief
of Defence Staff for Italy Vincenzo Camporini, and Marco Del Panta.
Following the opening session is the Ship Finance session, ‘Fol-
low the Money’. Jeff Prior and Diego Pacella, CFO and Managing Director of Italy’s largest shipping Company, will chair the discussion, as
bankers and owners debate the various and most appropriate sources
of funding, and with particular reference to private equity. Rory Hussey, Christoforos Dimakis, Guido Musso, Jeffrey Drake, Maria Teresa
Iardella, Fabrizio Vettosi, Arturo Capasso will represent the side of the
financiers, while owners Nicola Coccia, Angelo D’Amato, Maria Karnessi, Giuseppe Rizzo, and Mario Mattioli will represent the side of the
owners. There will also be a presentation by competition lawyer, Mark
Clough, titled ‘Shipping finance is not immune to EU competition law”

will start the proceedings with key-note speech on the verdict of the
well-known case of the tanker Prestige which sank off the coast of
Galicia. Christopher Brown, Maurizio Dardani, Patrizia Kern-Ferretti,
This year’s Shipping and the Law will include a
new feature to the program. A Premiere Workshop, held
on the 7th October, is organized in association with the
Group of Young Shipowners at Confitarma and ATENA –
The Italian Association of Naval Technology. Titled, “Ecoships: Investing in the New Technologies”, the workshop
will cover some of the latest technologies and strategies
implemented by owners to make their vessels more
energy efficient. Additionally, the Workshop will examine the commercial advantages of eco-vessel newbuilds.
Mike Salthouse, John Wiik, Shawn Winter, and Alexander Tsavliris
will kick start the discussion by illustrating the evolutionary trends
related to the volatility and the continual innovations in the maritime insurance and reinsurance markets.
Finally, the concluding session, ‘Build, Buy, Charter’, chaired by
Clive Aston and Mariella Bottiglieri, will deal with shipbuilding, sale
and purchase, ship repair, and chartering contracts from both a legal
and commercial perspective. Presentations will be given by Giorgio
Berlingieri, David McInnes, Christian Mollitor, David Pitlarge, and Studio Legale Lauro’s Ernersto Ardia.
