Chapter Dues were initiated on 10/01/2009. Since then, our chapter has grown from 28 chapter dues paying members on 09/30/2010 to 62 on 09/30/2014. Of the 62, 42 are HLAA members. After a slow start for 2014/2015, we have 52 members who are paid current until 09/30/2015. Of those, four are new members and three are former household members who have moved up to individual members. We have seven couples who pay as individual members! He will review current hearing aid technology, one feature is certain, be sure to ask the hearing professional to include a telecoil in your hearing aid. Also a review on the channels through which hearing aids are distributed, what you need to know as an informed consumer. Finally and very important, he will explore the options available to us to help finance this expense. John was the 2009-2011 president of Hearing Loss Association of America Kentuckiana Chapter and is currently their 2014 treasurer. He first found out about his hearing loss at age 23 when he enlisted in the Kentucky Air National Guard. He would say that most of his hearing loss was caused by rock 'n roll, fireworks, cap pistols, model airplane engines and woodworking machinery. His hearing, along with his eyesight, was recorded as a вЂњ2вЂќ in his official physical profile. Fortunately, his having a вЂњ2вЂќ for his hearing profile did not keep him from his chosen field of weather. Jump forward twenty years plus and JohnвЂ™s hearing was getting so bad that he had to do something. He found the national Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) when it was still named Self Help for the Hard of Hearing (SHHH) and subscribed to the journal. It took him another two years before he was ready to go and see first a dispenser, second another dispenser and finally an audiologist. He bought his hearing aids from the audiologist. His only regret is that he had not accepted his hearing loss sooner and had done something about it. He continued to struggle with the challenges of his hearing loss. Though things have gotten better, John says he is still a work in progress. A report from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that more than 59,000 military members are on disability for hearing loss from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. HLAA was founded in 1979 by Howard вЂњRockyвЂќ Stone, a retired CIA agent, who endured hearing loss from his service in the United States Army. Rocky was well-known in the agency for both his skill and his hearing loss. On one occasion he was having a hard time вЂњhearingвЂќ when talking with then-Director Richard Helms, so Rocky plopped himself on HelmsвЂ™ desk and asked him to face him directly so he could read his lips! Another time, his old-fashioned body hearing aid was mistaken for a recording spy device and was confiscated. Rocky earned the AgencyвЂ™s highest honor and went onto establish an organization for people who have hearing loss and want to stay in the hearing world with technology and strategies. For each month in the Anniversary Celebration Year you will find up to 5 or 6 suggested activities with the hope that your chapter can execute at least one of these. The goals are to promote the HLAA Mission and in that regard to promote what each chapter offers its members and community.
