Vasan aims to
get old name for
new party
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 21:
Supporters of former Union Minister G K Vasan have approached
the Election Commission of India to
get Tamil Maanila Congress’ as the
name of their new
party.
According to sources, senior leaders of
Vasan’s party have
camped in New Delhi
to get TMC as the
party name.
TMC was the party
floated by Vasan’s father G K Moopanar in 1996. It was later
merged with the Congress by Vasan.
Vasan, who announced quitting the
Congress and floating a new party recently, is expected to unveil the name
and flag of the party at a conference
in Trichy on 28 November.
More than 1.5 lakh people are
expected to attend the meeting at
Trichy’s G Corner ground.
Vasan had said it would draw the
attention of the whole country’.
He said that his party would be a
trendsetter and would draw the attention of the entire country and not
just Tamilnadu.
The cadre were enthusiastic about
the launch throughout the State,
Vasan said.

he five fishermen from Tamilnadu, who were sentenced to death in Sri Lanka for alleged drug trafficking but set free after President Mahinda Rajapaksa
pardoned them, arrived in Rameshwaram to a huge
welcome today. A grand reception was held for the п¬Ѓve
-- Emerson, P. Augustus, R Wilson, K Prasath and J
Langlet, in Thangachimadam on their arrival.
The п¬Ѓshermen from Rameswaram, who were released
by Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday, arrived by an
Air India flight at 1.05 a.m, airport officials said.
Tamilnadu Ministers B Valarmathi, S Sundararaj and K A
Jayapal, Union Minister of State and senior BJP leader Pon
Radhakrishnan and State BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan were among those who received the п¬Ѓshermen.
Meanwhile, police on Friday started questioning selfstyled godman Sant Rampal after he was arrested at
his ashram with more than 400 followers following a
10-day deadly standoff. Rampal was sent to a п¬Ѓve-day
police custody on Thursday.
Police have п¬Ѓled criminal charges against him and his
supporters over the stand-off that left six people dead
and about 200 others injured.
Rampal and 38 others have been charged with murder
and other offences after a clash between his supporters
and another group killed one person in July 2006. He
was freed on bail, which was cancelled after his followers entered a courtroom and threatened lawyers in July.

Chennai, Nov 21:
Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said Rs three lakh each has been provided to the п¬Ѓve п¬Ѓshermen who were freed from a Sri Lankan prison yesterday.
In a statement here, he said the cheques for Rs three lakh were handed
over to the п¬Ѓshermen by State Ministers B Valarmathi, K A Jayapal and Dr S
Sundararaj, when they (п¬Ѓshermen) reached Chennai airport late last midnight.
Panneerselvam said the п¬Ѓnancial assistance was given to enable them start
a new life.
Listing out various steps taken by the AIADMK government headed by J
Jayalalithaa for the welfare of п¬Ѓshing community in general and for the release
of п¬Ѓve п¬Ѓshermen in particular, the Chief Minister said Jayalalithaa stands at
the forefront when it comes to protecting the rights of п¬Ѓshermen.
As soon as a false case was foisted on the fishermen, Jayalalithaa took
all necessary steps to face it. Since this is an international issue, Tamilnadu
government could not contact with the Lankan government directly. So the
State government and Jayalalithaa continously persuaded the Centre to take
up the issue and ensure their release. The Central government took steps
accordingly and the fishermen were freed, which is a good thing,’ he said.
Panneerselvam added: At this juncture, it is sadenning that some politicians
in Tamilnadu are trying to politicise the issue, by stating that they were the
reason behind the release of the fishermen.’

Protest throws traffic out
of gear at Kodambakkam
q Attack on PT master q Parents stage rasta-roko
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 21:
Tension prevailed in the Kodambakkam area this
morning after hundreds of people took to the roads to
seek justice for Loyola Matriculation School’s Physical
Education Teacher (PET) S Baskar.
The protestors shouted slogans near the Kodambakkam bridge and gathered in front of Meenakshi
College, bringing traffic to a halt for couple of hours on
the stretch.
A huge posse of police was deployed at the spot to
avert any untoward incident. City Commissioner of Police S George and Additional Commissioner for South,
Abhash Kumar and Joint Commissioner for South R
Thirugnanam arrived at the spot to investigate into the
teacher-student assault case.
At around 11 am, headmaster Father Edward Selvaraj and
Arul Raj appealed to the protesters to end their agitation.
After being assured of a fair investigation, the crowd
dispersed and traffic resumed on the road.
Police also claimed to have arrested 17 persons who
were part of a mob that waged an attack on Baskar(42)
the PET within the school premises last afternoon.
According to police sources, while Baskar was
conducting a PT class on Thursday morning, a
student of class VIII imitated his whistle, which
enraged the teacher.
He then reportedly warned the student in front
of the class and sent him to another teacher who
reprimanded him.
During the third hour of the day, the boy complained
of a heachache and stomach pain, following which his
mother Aruna took him home.
Soon after, a gang of three arrived at the school and
showered blows on Baskar in the school playground.
Later, another group of around 10 persons joined the
mob and dragged him to a room and attacked him with
furniture.
The school management claimed that even though it
had tried to convey to the men that an amicable solution could be п¬Ѓgured out, the men continued to attack
Baskar.
Assistant Headmaster Alphonsa, who intervened to
stop the attack was also manhandled by the assailants.
The assault is said to be recorded in the school’s
CCTV camera.
Police has stated that the men are employees of Rich
India Company run by the student’s father, T Arul Anandan, which supplies security guards and manpower.
The п¬Ѓrm allegedly has a reputation of its employees
resorting to rowdyism, and that yesterday’s incident has
only confirmed the same.
Baskar is reported to be shifted from Royapettah
Government Hospital to the ICU in Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital.
His condition is said to be stable.

Uion Defence Minister and former

on Thursday missed out on mentioning the legendary actor’s name while

After reading out the names of Information and Broadcasting Minister

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Goa
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar,
Sate Governor Mridula Sinha, Parrikar appeared to have missed out
on Rajinikanth’s name.
But the former Goa Cief Minister,
known for his ready wit, immediately
made up for the lapse with a smile.
Addressing Rajnikanth with a
sheepish smile, Parrikar said, Sorry

Rajinikanth, known for his п¬Ѓery persona onscreen but gentle otherwise,
smiled back with equal warmth.
New Delhi, Nov 21:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today filed an affidavit to
contest the Justice Mudgal panel’s finding that its president in-exile N Srinivasan and four other board officials were aware of a player’s code of conduct
violation but did not act on it. According to reports, the BCCI refuted the Mudgal
committee п¬Ѓnding that no action was taken against a player, known as the
Individual 3 in the report, for his misconduct, saying he was reprimanded.’
The affidavit by the apex cricket body said that a BCCI working committee meeting was held on 18 November to analyse the report and it was deciphered that the
incident was about an overseas tour in which Ranjit Biswal was the team manager.
The affidavit said that Biswal, in the meeting, informed that the incident about
individual 3’ (player) violating Players’ Code of Conduct was reported to the
then BCCI president Shashank Manohar. The BCCI said the nature of violation
by the player was minor’ in nature and the player was orally reprimanded.’
Along with the BCCI affidavit, Biswal also filed a separate affidavit explaining
the entire episode. The Mudgal Committee, which had submitted its report on
17 November had said that N Srinivasan, along with four other BCCI officials,
was aware of the violation of the Players Code of Conduct by the player, but
no action was taken by any of them. The player was not named in the report.
BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel in his affidavit said: On 18 November, BCCI
discussed Justice Mudgal Panel report and Ranjib Biswal, representing Orissa
cricket Association, who was the manager at the time of incident, mentioned
that the incident referred to by the panel took place when he was the manager
of the Indian cricket team. The incident was a minor one and player was orally
reprimanded and Sashank Manohar, President of BCCI at that time was satisfied with the explanation given by the player.’

Radhakrishnan has said Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has
scripted history by securing the
release of the fishermen.
He said this while receiving the
fishermen at Chennai airport late
last night.
Elsewhere, in Chennai, speaking at a function organised by

India can make a difference
on the world: Modi
New Delhi, Nov 21:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
who returned from an official trip to
Australia, Fiji and Myanmar recently,
has blogged about his visit and experience there.
Modi wrote, I saw a reflection of the
energy of our youth, keeping pace
with rapid changes across the world. I
am convinced, with even greater consciousness, of the positive difference
India can make on the world stage’.
In the case of Australia, this was the
п¬Ѓrst bilateral visit by a Prime Minister
of India in 28 years. Fiji witnessed
such a visit almost 33 years back. On
one hand, the IT and Communication
revolution brought the world closer
but on the other hand, we could not
reach the shores of these two countries, each important in its own way,
for almost three decades’, the Prime
Minister wrote.
I attended five Summits including the one with leaders of Pacific
Islands that I hosted in Fiji and met
38 world leaders. The number of full
bilateral meetings I had stands at
20. In fact, I had the opportunity
to meet leaders from every part of
the world! These meetings were
frank, comprehensive and fruitful.
We covered substantial ground on
several issues. I met a wide range
of business leaders as well’.
Modi further wrote, During these
bilateral meetings, I noticed one
thing- that the world is looking at India
with renewed respect and immense
enthusiasm! I see a global community
that is tremendously keen to engage
with India.’.
With every leader, we discussed
how we could make our relations
more extensive, diverse and wideranging. Strengthening trade and
commerce and drawing industry to
India was a central part of the discussion. Numerous leaders I met were
very optimistic about our Make in
India’ initiative and are keen to come
to India and be a part of the extensive
and diverse opportunities India has to
offer. I see this as a positive sign, one
that will bring several opportunities to
India’s youth and give them the right
exposure that will make them shine.
Such exposure has become imperative keeping in mind the pace at which
the world is developing. Several world
leaders also showed keenness on our
plans to create Next Gen Infrastructure’ and smart cities.
I had the opportunity to address
the Parliaments of Australia and Fiji
during this visit.’

В‰ Automen, residents cross swords at Kodambakkam
he battle’ between auto drivers in Kodambakkam
and residents is a long fought one. Commuters
complain that automen almost always overcharge.
However, auto drivers tell us a tale of how the meter
rate is not fair for them.
My auto stand is in front of Kodambakkam railway
station. Suppose a customer comes up and asks a trip
to Vadapalani, I have to hesitate to switch on the meter.
I will tell you why. Simply because it is not proЕїtable
for us to go up to Vadapalani by meter rate and return
back. Vadapalani has share autos running. Assuredly
With various reason to Еїrm their stand, auto

also opines that the government revise the rates and
make the minimum fare Rs 30 instead of the current rate which is Rs 25. During peak hours, we spend more
petrol as we wait for the trafЕїc to clear. However, the meter shows only the distance and charge accordingly.
It doesn’t show the amount of
petrol spent. If we have to strictly go by meter, we will hardly
gain Rs 200 proЕїt a day;
given the rate of amenities, will we be able to run a family
with that money’, asks
Sekar, another auto driver from Kodambakkam.

conЕїded they would
choose call taxi over auto-rickshaws since cabs at least
run by the meter.
I am done ſghting with
the auto drivers. Few months back, when meters were compulsorily installed in
all the auto-rickshaws. I, amongst general public, was the happiest. However, within few weeks, it became pretty
evident that the auto drivers were not going to pay any heed to the law. They were charging over the meter fare.
I honestly prefer a taxi since I don’t feel cheated while paying my fare. It is scary to even go and ask for an auto
since you have to be ready to ſght over the fare’, says vice-president of Kodambakkam Residents’ Civic and
Welfare Association, Balaji. He also complains that the TrafЕїc Police do very little to regulate this.
A few weeks back, I called an auto rickshaw in Nungambakkam around 6 in the evening and asked him to
turn on the meter. He shook his head and said a Еїrm no. Frustrated, and due to language barrier, I went to the
nearest trafЕїc constable who was regulating trafЕїc in that area and complained about this. To my shock, the
policeman merely asked me to go ſnd some other auto-rickshaw then. With the police having such an attitude,
I doubt the situation will ever get better’, says a female college student who seeks anonymity.
With auto drivers blaming that meter fares are ridiculously low, the only possible solution to this
tug of war would be for the government to look into the meter rates and revise them if the claims of
the auto drivers are genuine and ensure that rules are followed.

Puppies and kittens left to fend

Residents of the city have taken

Initially, the dogs were taking

in the recent past, people have
started adopting stray dogs. Even
if they don’t let them into their

As per the conditions, a Unified Metropolitan Transport

The Central and State government would set up a joint

In a perfect world, every dog

T
Blow for Sinha
he removal of CBI chief Ranjit Sinha by the Supreme Court
from the 2G Spectrum case holds many implications for the
investigation agency as well as other probes he is monitoring.
The CBI director has also made it clear that he has no intention to
challenge the SC order by п¬Ѓling a review petition. Sinha said that
he will obey the apex court order issued by a bench headed by the
Chief Justice of India. Coming twelve days before his retirement, the
Supreme Court indictment of him from the 2G scam case, saying
the allegations against him of protecting some accused appears to
be prima facie credible’ is a major blow to Ranjit Sinha and also to
the agency he is heading. The apex court, in an unprecedented order,
handed over the case to the senior-most officer after Sinha in the 2G
scam investigating team. A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu,
however, refused to pass an elaborate order on the issue saying that
it would “tarnish” the image and reputation’ of the premier agency.
The apex court also recalled its earlier order by which it directed
the NGO to disclose the name of whistleblower who had provided
documents and visitors diary of Sinha’s residence.
This is undoubtedly one of the most, most embarrassing moments
in the CBI’s history. The apex court was kind enough to pull its
punches, in order to prevent the CBI’s name from being tarnished,
but Sinha’s ignominy is complete. In many ways, the director made
matters more difficult for himself by accusing an senior officer of
DIG rank of being a mole for Bhushan’s NGO. Needless to say, such
allegations only ended up harming the CBI’s name further.
Sinha had been mired in controversy right from his appointment
on 3 December, 2012. The BJP had opposed his appointment with
Arun Jaitley, then leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, even
writing a letter to the prime minister on the matter. Of course, the
BJP itself split on the matter with a few leaders like Shatrughan
Sinha coming to his rescue.
Ranjit Sinha got into more trouble when he took the CBI’s
investigative report on the coal scam to the then law minister
Ashwani Kumar for vetting. In September this year, Ranjit Sinha’s
role in the 2G investigation came under a cloud when a national
daily revealed details from the visitor’s diary outside his home,
alleging that corporate honchos representing the accused in the 2G
scam were frequent visitors to his home. With the Supreme Court
raising doubts over the integrity of the CBI director, it would be best
for the agency if Ranjit Sinha immediately tenders his resignation.
The larger point is: However perfect the system, it still necessarily
relies on those who are put in charge of it. The CBI Director was
given a two-year п¬Ѓxed tenure on the premise that it would insulate
him against undue pressures from the political executive. But as
the experience with Ranjit Sinha shows, the security of tenure only
emboldened him to do his own rotten thing. He was clever, though,
playing the ruling party’s tune when it suited him, pretending to be
independent at other times, but all along feathering his own nest.
In a sense, Ranjit Sinha has met his come-uppance just when he
seemed to be getting away with his double act, running with the
scamster hares and hunting with the unscrupulous hounds and, п¬Ѓnally,
settling the winner as per his own personal convenience. Ranjit Sinha,
to say the least, has further besmirched the already low image of the
country’s apex investigating agency. Sooner the last infliction of
the UPA is out of the CBI, the better it will be for the restoration of
some of its lost credibility. Hopefully, the next incumbent will be
free from the taint of a crooked political connection.

We’ve just had the extraordinarily successful visit of Prime Minister Modi

every issue of importance to us with India that we’re carrying forward,
Anthony Blinken, nominee for US Deputy Secretary of State, told Senators
during his confirmation hearing.
Blinken was responding to questions from Senators on India-US
relationship. I think we’ve seen the US-India relationship come a remarkable
distance, he said referring to the recent visit of Modi to the US.
It started with the end of the Clinton administration. The Bush
administration did a tremendous job in carrying the relationship forward,
he said. Republican Senator Tim Kaine said the US-India relationship is
entering a new phase for a variety of reasons, where there’s a huge upside
opportunity on economic cooperation and trade, on military cooperation,
on cooperation on cyber issues.
The United States is seeking to forge new global partnerships with India,
said Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign

Olive oil improves heart health’
LONDON:
Regular consumption of olive oil can drastically
improve heart health and reduce the risk of cardiac diseases, according to a new study.
Researchers at the Universities of Glasgow and
Lisbon and Mosaiques Diagnostics in Germany
teamed-up to study the effect of olive oil, a Mediterranean diet staple, on heart health in a group
of non-consumers.
The study, published in The American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition, was set up to examine the
effect of phenolics, natural compounds found in
plants, including olives, on heart health.
Phenolics, along with monounsaturated fatty
acids, are thought by the Federal Drug Administration in the US and European Food Safety
Authority to be responsible for the protective
effect of olive oil.
The researchers recruited 69 healthy volunteers who were split into two groups and asked
to consume 20ml of olive oil either low or high
in phenolics every day over a six-week period.
A particular feature of the study was the target
group studied: healthy individuals who did not
regularly consume olive oil.
The research team applied a new diagnostic technology to study the impact of the oil
supplements on health: urine samples were
examined for a range of peptides (produced by
the breakdown of proteins) already identified
as indicators or bio markers of diseases such
as coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic kid-
ney disease (CKD) and
diabetes.
The results showed
that both groups saw
a big improvement in
scores for CAD – the
most common form of
heart disease.
Dr Emilie Combet of
the School of Medicine
at the University of Glasgow, said: What we
found was that regardless of the phenolic
content of the oil, there was a positive effect
on CAD scores’.
In the population studied, any olive oil, low
or high in phenolics, seems to be beneficial.

Kotak Mahindra to
acquire ING Vysya
Tech Mahindra to buy
Lightbridge Communications
New Delhi, Nov 21 (PTI):
Kotak Mahindra Bank on Thursday decided to acquire mid-sized lender
ING Vysya Bank in an all-share transaction to strengthen its position ahead
of entry of new players.
The Uday Kotak run bank said the consolidation was founded on leveraging significant complementaries that exist between the two banks’.
The merger would be done through a share swap in which 725 equity
shares of Rs п¬Ѓve each of Kotak Mahindra will be issued for every 1,000
shares of Rs 10 each held in ING Vysya Bank.
Post amalgamation, shareholders of ING Vysya Bank will receive shares
of Kotak Mahindra Bank in the aforementioned ratio, resulting in change
in shareholding of the Kotak Mahindra Bank’, a statement from Kotak
Mahindra Bank said.
The transaction would be subject to approval of shareholders of both the
banks as well as statutory approval from RBI and Competition Commission
of India, it said. Netherlands-based ING holds 42.73 per cent stake in ING
Vysya Bank through two investment vehicles routed through Mauritius.
The statement further said: this revenue synergy led and growth oriented
amalgamation, adopting the best practices of the banking, governance
and prudence from both banks is expected to result in a superior platform
benefiting from efficiencies of size and scope over time for all shareholders, customers and employees’.
I am excited to announce the merger of Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING
Vysya Bank, subject to approvals. We will work to create stakeholder
value’, Kotak Mahindra Bank managing director and vice chairman Uday
Kotak tweeted. Following the acquisition, Kotak Bank’s number of branches
would more than double. This is Kotak Mahindra Bank’s first ever acquisition of any bank.
The last merger in the banking space took place in 2010 when ICICI Bank
amalgamated Bank of Rajasthan.
New Delhi, Nov 21 (PTI):
Tech Mahindra will acquire global network services п¬Ѓrm Lightbridge Communications Corporation (LCC) in an all-cash deal worth $240 million (over
Rs 1,486 crore).
The move will help the Mumbai-based п¬Ѓrm tap the rapidly growing market
opportunity in the telecommunications and enterprises network space.

We welcome a diverse workforce of 5,700 network professionals across
п¬Ѓve continents and more than 50 countries. We expect network services to
be a major growth engine for our organisation’, Tech Mahindra executive
vice chairman Vineet Nayyar said.
He added that the total cash outflow for the deal is expected to be between
$200-220 million as LCC has a shareholder debt of about $85 million, some
part of which Tech Mahindra may pay later.
The deal will be funded through internal accruals.
Headquartered in Virginia, US, LCC is one of the world’s largest independent global providers of network engineering services to the telecommunications industry. We have a lot of common clients but the deal will give
us access to 20-30 new clients in parts of Asia, Israel and Latin America.
The acquisition positions us as a pre-eminent partner for network services
globally’, Tech Mahindra MD and CEO CP Gurnani said.
It will also help further differentiate Tech Mahindra’s offerings to both
communications and enterprise customers, he added.
For the quarter ended 30 September, 2014, Tech Mahindra’s net profit
stood at Rs 719.7 crore, while its revenues were at Rs 5,487.9 crore.
Ernst & Young was Tech Mahindra’s diligence partner and Dechert LLP
was Tech Mahindra’s legal advisor for this deal. Jefferies LLC acted as
sole п¬Ѓnancial advisor to LCC and Covington & Burling LLP served as
LCC’s legal advisor.

London, Nov 21 (AFP):
Twitter`s co-founder outlined plans
to make cash registers a thing of the
past on Thursday as he held a global
launch for new software
that he said would help
small businesses grow.
Jack Dorsey, who is
chairman of Twitter and
chief executive of the mobile payments company
Square, said the software would allow
shopkeepers to track sales and provide
digital receipts.
We think it`s a great replacement to
any cash register’, Dorsey said at a
Financial Times conference in London.
It means we`re now a global company’, he said.
The software, Square Register, was
only available in Canada, Japan and
the United States, where it tracked
around four million sales a day.
It can now be downloaded for free
everywhere else and supports 130
currencies, although it will
not allow actual payments
for the moment.
The company offered testimonials from businesses in
Australia, Hungary, Mexico,
Philippines and Vietnam
and Dorsey said many had already
begun using the software by getting
around national controls.
Square teamed up with the smartphone app Snapchat earlier this
week for a service that allows users
in the United States to send money
to friends by simply typing dollar
amounts into new Snapcash’ messages.

Sochi, Nov 21:
Despite being down 4-5 with just three more games to go,
Viswanathan Anand said he was п¬Ѓne with an easy draw in the
ninth game and insisted that he still has a chance of posting
a win in the World Chess Championship match.
You have to just play the positions you get, the situations you
get. I can count, I know the score but I think I still have some
chances,’ Anand said at the post-match conference after the
ninth game ended in a quick draw.
Asked about the level of confidence at this point, the fivetime world champion said, Quite reasonable. I just have to try
harder with white,’ Anand said, pointing to his remaining two
white games in the last three rounds. A lot of this (theory) is
known, this idea is often met with Bishop move, but I didn’t
really expect it. But when it happened there is not really much
that black can do.’ Anand refused to draw comparisons to his
match in Chennai: I am going to focus on this match, I don’t

(today) there is a game going to be played tomorrow, so I will
go and focus on that now.’ Meanwhile, calling it a pretty even
match so far, world champion Magnus Carlsen said nerves will
play a part in the remaining games. On the shortest game in
the match so far, lasting barely an hour, Carlsen said, It was
very short indeed, I didn’t quite see what to do in this (final)
position, he is better prepared than I am.’

Ross Taylor hit a return-toform half-century to help New

Taylor was 77 not out for
his 23rd п¬Ѓfty to help his team
recover from a shaky 79-4 to
close the fourth day on 167 for

with four wickets intact.
Mark Craig (nought) was
in Taylor’s company as New

Pakistan won the п¬Ѓrst Test
by 248 runs in Abu Dhabi last
week.
Meanwhile, Tim Southee, who
rocked the Pakistan line-up
before wicket-keeper Sarfaraz
Ahmed led the п¬Ѓghtback with
a ton, said We started so well

and then unfortunately we
couldn’t quite, I guess, deliver

Sarfraz batted extremely well
with the tail and worked the
strike nicely and batted a good

credit but I also think that we

Sarfraz’s 112 led Pakistan’s

New Zealand’s 403, conceding
a slender 10-run lead.

IPTL boss not concerned
over Federer injury
Singapore, Nov 21 (AFP):
The head of the new International Premier Tennis League
(IPTL) shrugged off concerns over Roger Federer’s fitness
yesterday as the Swiss star battles a back injury.
Founder and managing director Mahesh Bhupathi said he
had received reassurances from Federer’s camp as the clock
ticks down to the innovative tournament’s debut season.
We spoke to them. He’s fine, he’s playing Davis Cup this
weekend,’ Bhupathi told AFP in Singapore, one of four venues
for the IPTL which starts in Manila next week.
A possible withdrawal by Federer, who pulled out of Sunday’s
World Tour Finals decider but is playing the Davis Cup п¬Ѓnal
against France this weekend, would be a major blow to the
IPTL.
Rafael Nadal, who is recovering from appendix surgery, is
the notable absentee in a tournament which features a who’swho of current and former tennis stars.
Bhupathi said he hoped the made-for-TV IPTL, which puts
a limit on match-times and features a shot-clock, DJs and
cheerleaders, would become a strong
draw for players even at the end of a
long season.
We’ve created this exciting format
and they’ll hopefully schedule us along
with the four Slams and they can work
around it,’ he said at the launch of the
Singapore Slammers team.
People say that the season
is long but we’re creating
something that is exciting
enough for them to come so
that they’ll automatically
schedule us.’
Doubts have been
raised over the viability
and format of the
tournament, which has
ties of п¬Ѓve single-set
matches in men’s
and women’s singles,
mixed doubles, men’s
doubles and men’s
veterans.
Teams representing
Manila, Singapore, New
Delhi and Dubai will

four cities in a minileague packed into a
compact schedule of

nerve-wracking encounter which saw
each of them refusing to yield any

Bagdatis and
India’s Saketh

Abu Dhabi, Nov 21:
Kimi Raikkonen saw fun

ended months of waiting and
confirmed that Sebastian

Where Alonso and
Raikkonen were

Meet on Internationalisation of Higher Education’ at VIT Chennai campus
NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 21:
There has been a lot of talk
about brain-drain and all that but
the Cultural Affairs Officer of the
US Consulate General in Chennai Andie De Arment today said
that it is good to see people going abroad to study as it helped
students get a wider perspective
of things and also enhance their
skillset.
De Arment was speaking at an
one-day international conference
on Internationalisation of Higher
Education’ at the Chennai campus premises of VIT University.
The conference was organised
by the university in association
with the US Consulate (in Chennai).
Studying abroad would expose
students to international atmosphere which adds value to not only
education but also provides an opportunity to hone their competitiveness at the global level,’ she said.
There is a lot of awareness
among school students too, which

she was nice to note.
She said when they had interacted with 15-year-olds in
Bangalore recently to select
them for academic programmes
in the US as part of international
exchange programmes, the increased awareness levels were
clearly evident in them. There
was a six per cent increase in
students coming from India to the
US last year, she said and added
that around 100,000 students
were in the country last year from
India. Similarly, there was a 60
per cent increase in the number
of American students coming to
India in the last п¬Ѓve years.
Such two-way programmes,
internationalisation of education
help foster stronger ties between
the two nations, De Arment said.
Assistant Vice-President of
VIT University Kadhambari S
Viswanathan said technology
had a great impact on education,
it took the platforms of learning
to a global level. A professor
sitting in a university abroad can
educate students in any part of
the globe, thanks to technologies
like internet.

New Delhi, Nov 21:
With an aim to unite Hindus across the globe, the World Hindu
Congress 2014 (WHC) began here today.
The conference is being organised by the World Hindu Foundation and is expected to be attended by about 1,500 delegates from
40 countries.
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai
Lama will address the inaugural session.
Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Nitin Gadkari and Nirmala Sitharaman
are also scheduled to address the gathering.
BJP president Amit Shah is among those set to take part in later
sessions.
The conference, which has attracted educationists and scientists,
will have 45 sessions.
The organisers said the WHC intends to serve as a channel for
Hindus across the globe to congregate on a common platform and
deliberate on ways to strengthen the community.
They said the Congress will also help organise the talent of Hindus
that remains scattered and help people network with one another.
The need of the hour was to have a pressure group’ of Hindus
just as the Jews do in the US, one activist said.
We are a united society. But we are not an organised society.
The purpose is to have an organisational structure and institutional
framework so that Hindus across the globe can leverage each other,’
Liza Bhansali, coordinator of WHC, said.
The conference will see discussions on economy, politics, education, women and media.

Relief for
Indian
techies in US
Washington, Nov 21 (PTI):
US President Barack
Obama today bypassed
Congress to announce the
most sweeping immigration
reform in a generation that
will protect 5 million illegal
workers from deportation
and may benefit hundreds
and thousands of Indian
techies seeking legal permanent status.
Obama rejected accusations by conservatives
that he is offering a free
pass to undocumented
immigrants and warned in
a prime-time address that
he would bolster border
security and make it harder
for unauthorised outsiders
to get into the country.
The executive action, said
to be one of the largest
measure by a US President
on immigration, is expected
to help a significant number
of Indian techies who currently have to undergo
a painful and agonising
process of H-1B visas to
get legal permanent status

line in Mumbai. Kohli said it was already obvious that he and Anushka were in a relationship
and people should not be curious about them
anymore. If you are seen together somewhere
and still people ask is it confirmed?’, then it is
a matter of common sense. If you know then
why ask the same question, that is our basic
logic behind it. It is not something wrong apparently for people that we are doing. We will not
personally like to speak about it because it is
something very personal for us and that should
be respected by the media and everyone else
as well,’ Kohli said.
The 26-year old stand-in-skipper also batted
for boxer Sarita Devi and felt that her decision
to not accept the bronze medal at the Incheon
Asian Games wasn’t against the rule. I know
about this incident and I think a sportsman
needs utmost support from his sporting association or sporting firm. I personally don’t think
her decision was against the rules. She felt
something and took that decision. I am feeling
that it could have been on the wrong side or a
different view. I don’t know what is the actual
issue but what I have seen from outside, this
is my opinion,’ he said.

2. Figures for the quarter ended September 30, 2014 are the balancing п¬Ѓgures between audited п¬Ѓgures in respect of full п¬Ѓnancial
period ( 18 months) and the published period to date п¬Ѓgures upto the quarter ended June 30, 2014. Also the п¬Ѓgures upto the

3. The Company operates in a single business segment - castings. Further, the Company markets its products primarily in the
domestic markets. Hence there are no reportable geographical segments.
4. The Company’s performance has been impacted by automotive market slowdown, inadequate price compensation, volatile
material prices, delays in recovery of certain long pending balances and consequent extended working capital cycles etc. As
a result, the company has significant accumulated losses as at September 30, 2014. In February 2013, the Company had
intimated to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR’) about erosion of more than 50% of the Company’s
peak networth pursuant to section 23 of Sick Industrial Companies (Special Provision) Act, 1985. (SICA’). The Company has
initiated various steps to improve its operational performance / liquidity, remove bottlenecks relating to its projects, improve
the networth including raising of capital etc. Based on business plans, availability of short-term and long-term bank funding
arrangements, independent impairment testing, increase in capital by way of preferential allotment and qualified institutional
placement and in view of the continued support by the promoters including assistance in relation to certain long pending
balances, the Company believes that it would be able to realize its assets and settle its liabilities in the normal course at their
carrying values and that no adjustments would be required in respect of the carrying value of assets/liabilities as at September
30, 2014. Accordingly, the п¬Ѓnancial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis.
5. The Company had acquired a piece of land from APIIC (Andhra Pradesh Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation Limited)
and the registration of the land in favour of the Company would be completed upon the Company commencing commercial
production before March 31, 2012. Whilst steps are being taken to implement the project on such land, the Company has not
been able to do so in view of the delays in basic infrastructural facilities (electricity, water supply etc) being made available to
the Company. The Company has been seeking extension of time from the Government Authorities to implement the project.
The Telengana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (pursuant to the formation of the state of Telengana) has
sought to cancel the allotment of the aforesaid land and has requested the Company to surrender the possession of the vacant
land by October 20, 2014 for which the Company sought a further extension of time up to September 2015. The Company has
also communicated the tentative timelines for implementation of the project. Based on legal advice, the Company believes that
it has adequate grounds to defend its position on retaining the possession of the land. Pending the resolution of the aforesaid
matter, the associated project costs incurred to date aggregating to Rs.1,658 lakhs (excluding land cost) have been carried at
cost as at September 30, 2014.
6. The Company’s previous financial year was for a period of 6 months ended March 31, 2013. The aforesaid format of presenting
the п¬Ѓnancial results is in the context of shorter period for the previous п¬Ѓnancial year and the related guidance provided by the
stock exchange.
7. Exceptional item of Rs. 1129.53 lakhs for the eighteen months ended September 30, 2014, represent amount incurred towards
voluntary retirement arrangements with the employees in one of the plants.
