According to sources, senior leaders of Vasan’s party have camped in New Delhi to get TMC as the party name. TMC was the party floated by Vasan’s father G K Moopanar in 1996. It was later merged with the Congress by Vasan. Vasan, who announced quitting the Congress and floating a new party recently, is expected to unveil the name and flag of the party at a conference in Trichy on 28 November. More than 1.5 lakh people are expected to attend the meeting at Trichy’s G Corner ground. Vasan had said it would draw the attention of the whole country’. He said that his party would be a trendsetter and would draw the attention of the entire country and not just Tamilnadu. The cadre were enthusiastic about the launch throughout the State, Vasan said. T Homecoming he five fishermen from Tamilnadu, who were sentenced to death in Sri Lanka for alleged drug trafficking but set free after President Mahinda Rajapaksa pardoned them, arrived in Rameshwaram to a huge welcome today. A grand reception was held for the five -- Emerson, P. Augustus, R Wilson, K Prasath and J Langlet, in Thangachimadam on their arrival. The fishermen from Rameswaram, who were released by Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday, arrived by an Air India flight at 1.05 a.m, airport officials said. Tamilnadu Ministers B Valarmathi, S Sundararaj and K A Jayapal, Union Minister of State and senior BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan and State BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan were among those who received the fishermen. Meanwhile, police on Friday started questioning selfstyled godman Sant Rampal after he was arrested at his ashram with more than 400 followers following a 10-day deadly standoff. Rampal was sent to a five-day police custody on Thursday. Police have filed criminal charges against him and his supporters over the stand-off that left six people dead and about 200 others injured. Rampal and 38 others have been charged with murder and other offences after a clash between his supporters and another group killed one person in July 2006. He was freed on bail, which was cancelled after his followers entered a courtroom and threatened lawyers in July. 5 fishermen back in TN q Rs 3 lakh each as financial aid: CM q Warm welcome at Thangachimadam Support showers from govt NT Bureau Chennai, Nov 21: Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today said Rs three lakh each has been provided to the five fishermen who were freed from a Sri Lankan prison yesterday. In a statement here, he said the cheques for Rs three lakh were handed over to the fishermen by State Ministers B Valarmathi, K A Jayapal and Dr S Sundararaj, when they (fishermen) reached Chennai airport late last midnight. Panneerselvam said the financial assistance was given to enable them start a new life. Listing out various steps taken by the AIADMK government headed by J Jayalalithaa for the welfare of fishing community in general and for the release of five fishermen in particular, the Chief Minister said Jayalalithaa stands at the forefront when it comes to protecting the rights of fishermen. As soon as a false case was foisted on the fishermen, Jayalalithaa took all necessary steps to face it. Since this is an international issue, Tamilnadu government could not contact with the Lankan government directly. So the State government and Jayalalithaa continously persuaded the Centre to take up the issue and ensure their release. The Central government took steps accordingly and the fishermen were freed, which is a good thing,’ he said. Panneerselvam added: At this juncture, it is sadenning that some politicians in Tamilnadu are trying to politicise the issue, by stating that they were the reason behind the release of the fishermen.’ HIT & SIT Parents staging protest at Kodambakkam seeking justice for the physical education teacher of a private school, who was brutally attacked. Photo:B ANAND Protest throws traffic out of gear at Kodambakkam q Attack on PT master q Parents stage rasta-roko NT Bureau Chennai, Nov 21: Tension prevailed in the Kodambakkam area this morning after hundreds of people took to the roads to seek justice for Loyola Matriculation School’s Physical Education Teacher (PET) S Baskar. The protestors shouted slogans near the Kodambakkam bridge and gathered in front of Meenakshi College, bringing traffic to a halt for couple of hours on the stretch. A huge posse of police was deployed at the spot to avert any untoward incident. City Commissioner of Police S George and Additional Commissioner for South, Abhash Kumar and Joint Commissioner for South R Thirugnanam arrived at the spot to investigate into the teacher-student assault case. At around 11 am, headmaster Father Edward Selvaraj and Arul Raj appealed to the protesters to end their agitation. After being assured of a fair investigation, the crowd dispersed and traffic resumed on the road. Police also claimed to have arrested 17 persons who were part of a mob that waged an attack on Baskar(42) the PET within the school premises last afternoon. According to police sources, while Baskar was conducting a PT class on Thursday morning, a student of class VIII imitated his whistle, which enraged the teacher. He then reportedly warned the student in front of the class and sent him to another teacher who reprimanded him. During the third hour of the day, the boy complained of a heachache and stomach pain, following which his mother Aruna took him home. Soon after, a gang of three arrived at the school and showered blows on Baskar in the school playground. Later, another group of around 10 persons joined the mob and dragged him to a room and attacked him with furniture. The school management claimed that even though it had tried to convey to the men that an amicable solution could be figured out, the men continued to attack Baskar. Assistant Headmaster Alphonsa, who intervened to stop the attack was also manhandled by the assailants. The assault is said to be recorded in the school’s CCTV camera. Police has stated that the men are employees of Rich India Company run by the student’s father, T Arul Anandan, which supplies security guards and manpower. The firm allegedly has a reputation of its employees resorting to rowdyism, and that yesterday’s incident has only confirmed the same. Baskar is reported to be shifted from Royapettah Government Hospital to the ICU in Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. His condition is said to be stable. After reading out the names of Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for I&B Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Sate Governor Mridula Sinha, Parrikar appeared to have missed out on Rajinikanth’s name. But the former Goa Cief Minister, known for his ready wit, immediately made up for the lapse with a smile. Addressing Rajnikanth with a sheepish smile, Parrikar said, Sorry for that goof. I had written (the names down). Forgot the paper down there.’ Rajinikanth, known for his fiery persona onscreen but gentle otherwise, smiled back with equal warmth. New Delhi, Nov 21: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today filed an affidavit to contest the Justice Mudgal panel’s finding that its president in-exile N Srinivasan and four other board officials were aware of a player’s code of conduct violation but did not act on it. According to reports, the BCCI refuted the Mudgal committee finding that no action was taken against a player, known as the Individual 3 in the report, for his misconduct, saying he was reprimanded.’ The affidavit by the apex cricket body said that a BCCI working committee meeting was held on 18 November to analyse the report and it was deciphered that the incident was about an overseas tour in which Ranjit Biswal was the team manager. The affidavit said that Biswal, in the meeting, informed that the incident about individual 3’ (player) violating Players’ Code of Conduct was reported to the then BCCI president Shashank Manohar. The BCCI said the nature of violation by the player was minor’ in nature and the player was orally reprimanded.’ Along with the BCCI affidavit, Biswal also filed a separate affidavit explaining the entire episode. The Mudgal Committee, which had submitted its report on 17 November had said that N Srinivasan, along with four other BCCI officials, was aware of the violation of the Players Code of Conduct by the player, but no action was taken by any of them. The player was not named in the report. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel in his affidavit said: On 18 November, BCCI discussed Justice Mudgal Panel report and Ranjib Biswal, representing Orissa cricket Association, who was the manager at the time of incident, mentioned that the incident referred to by the panel took place when he was the manager of the Indian cricket team. The incident was a minor one and player was orally reprimanded and Sashank Manohar, President of BCCI at that time was satisfied with the explanation given by the player.’ 24 more in island jail A Sri Lankan court today reportedly extended the custody of 24 Indian fishermen up to 5 December. India can make a difference on the world: Modi New Delhi, Nov 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned from an official trip to Australia, Fiji and Myanmar recently, has blogged about his visit and experience there. Modi wrote, I saw a reflection of the energy of our youth, keeping pace with rapid changes across the world. I am convinced, with even greater consciousness, of the positive difference India can make on the world stage’. In the case of Australia, this was the first bilateral visit by a Prime Minister of India in 28 years. Fiji witnessed such a visit almost 33 years back. On one hand, the IT and Communication revolution brought the world closer but on the other hand, we could not reach the shores of these two countries, each important in its own way, for almost three decades’, the Prime Minister wrote. I attended five Summits including the one with leaders of Pacific Islands that I hosted in Fiji and met 38 world leaders. The number of full bilateral meetings I had stands at 20. In fact, I had the opportunity to meet leaders from every part of the world! These meetings were frank, comprehensive and fruitful. We covered substantial ground on several issues. I met a wide range of business leaders as well’. Modi further wrote, During these bilateral meetings, I noticed one thing- that the world is looking at India with renewed respect and immense enthusiasm! I see a global community that is tremendously keen to engage with India.’. With every leader, we discussed how we could make our relations more extensive, diverse and wideranging. Strengthening trade and commerce and drawing industry to India was a central part of the discussion. Numerous leaders I met were very optimistic about our Make in India’ initiative and are keen to come to India and be a part of the extensive and diverse opportunities India has to offer. I see this as a positive sign, one that will bring several opportunities to India’s youth and give them the right exposure that will make them shine. Such exposure has become imperative keeping in mind the pace at which the world is developing. Several world leaders also showed keenness on our plans to create Next Gen Infrastructure’ and smart cities. I had the opportunity to address the Parliaments of Australia and Fiji during this visit.’ 2 FRIDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2014 City Centre The lost greenery of R A Puram CHENNAI TWIT PICK FOOD FOR THOUGHT T R he park in Krishnapuri, RA Puram mainra tained by the Corporation of Chennai has been in a state of neglect for more than g a month. Commuters complain that automen almost always overcharge. However, auto drivers tell us a tale of how the meter rate is not fair for them. My auto stand is in front of Kodambakkam railway station. Suppose a customer comes up and asks a trip to Vadapalani, I have to hesitate to switch on the meter. I will tell you why. Simply because it is not proſtable for us to go up to Vadapalani by meter rate and return back. Vadapalani has share autos running. Assuredly With various reason to ſrm their stand, auto we will not get a return savaari. It is a loss for us. Hence, drivers allegedly overcharge commuters at we are forced to charge more’, says Anniyappan. He Kodambakkam. also opines that the government revise the rates and make the minimum fare Rs 30 instead of the current rate which is Rs 25. During peak hours, we spend more petrol as we wait for the trafſc to clear. However, the meter shows only the distance and charge accordingly. It doesn’t show the amount of petrol spent. If we have to strictly go by meter, we will hardly gain Rs 200 proſt a day; given the rate of amenities, will we be able to run a family with that money’, asks Sekar, another auto driver from Kodambakkam. M A K AK However, commuters often feel cheated by auto drivers and few of them even AMB D O K conſded they would choose call taxi over auto-rickshaws since cabs at least run by the meter. I am done ſghting with the auto drivers. Few months back, when meters were compulsorily installed in all the auto-rickshaws. I, amongst general public, was the happiest. However, within few weeks, it became pretty evident that the auto drivers were not going to pay any heed to the law. They were charging over the meter fare. I honestly prefer a taxi since I don’t feel cheated while paying my fare. It is scary to even go and ask for an auto since you have to be ready to ſght over the fare’, says vice-president of Kodambakkam Residents’ Civic and Welfare Association, Balaji. He also complains that the Trafſc Police do very little to regulate this. A few weeks back, I called an auto rickshaw in Nungambakkam around 6 in the evening and asked him to turn on the meter. He shook his head and said a ſrm no. Frustrated, and due to language barrier, I went to the nearest trafſc constable who was regulating trafſc in that area and complained about this. To my shock, the policeman merely asked me to go ſnd some other auto-rickshaw then. With the police having such an attitude, I doubt the situation will ever get better’, says a female college student who seeks anonymity. With auto drivers blaming that meter fares are ridiculously low, the only possible solution to this tug of war would be for the government to look into the meter rates and revise them if the claims of the auto drivers are genuine and ensure that rules are followed. — NT Bureau ins has The recent ra ace sp made the ba am kkam beneath Kod logged. er ƀyover wat STAR SPORTS 1 Sri Sri Ravi Shankar @SriSri And the argument continues UNDER WATER TV TODAY People of all religions who misuse faith for personal gain should be severely dealt with.At the same time, innocent leaders must be protected 9 7 9 8 4 5 4 8 9 6 The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once: Easy nah? The CBI director has also made it clear that he has no intention to challenge the SC order by filing a review petition. Sinha said that he will obey the apex court order issued by a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India. Coming twelve days before his retirement, the Supreme Court indictment of him from the 2G scam case, saying the allegations against him of protecting some accused appears to be prima facie credible’ is a major blow to Ranjit Sinha and also to the agency he is heading. The apex court, in an unprecedented order, handed over the case to the senior-most officer after Sinha in the 2G scam investigating team. A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu, however, refused to pass an elaborate order on the issue saying that it would “tarnish” the image and reputation’ of the premier agency. The apex court also recalled its earlier order by which it directed the NGO to disclose the name of whistleblower who had provided documents and visitors diary of Sinha’s residence. This is undoubtedly one of the most, most embarrassing moments in the CBI’s history. The apex court was kind enough to pull its punches, in order to prevent the CBI’s name from being tarnished, but Sinha’s ignominy is complete. In many ways, the director made matters more difficult for himself by accusing an senior officer of DIG rank of being a mole for Bhushan’s NGO. Needless to say, such allegations only ended up harming the CBI’s name further. Sinha had been mired in controversy right from his appointment on 3 December, 2012. The BJP had opposed his appointment with Arun Jaitley, then leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, even writing a letter to the prime minister on the matter. Of course, the BJP itself split on the matter with a few leaders like Shatrughan Sinha coming to his rescue. Ranjit Sinha got into more trouble when he took the CBI’s investigative report on the coal scam to the then law minister Ashwani Kumar for vetting. In September this year, Ranjit Sinha’s role in the 2G investigation came under a cloud when a national daily revealed details from the visitor’s diary outside his home, alleging that corporate honchos representing the accused in the 2G scam were frequent visitors to his home. With the Supreme Court raising doubts over the integrity of the CBI director, it would be best for the agency if Ranjit Sinha immediately tenders his resignation. The larger point is: However perfect the system, it still necessarily relies on those who are put in charge of it. The CBI Director was given a two-year fixed tenure on the premise that it would insulate him against undue pressures from the political executive. But as the experience with Ranjit Sinha shows, the security of tenure only emboldened him to do his own rotten thing. He was clever, though, playing the ruling party’s tune when it suited him, pretending to be independent at other times, but all along feathering his own nest. In a sense, Ranjit Sinha has met his come-uppance just when he seemed to be getting away with his double act, running with the scamster hares and hunting with the unscrupulous hounds and, finally, settling the winner as per his own personal convenience. Ranjit Sinha, to say the least, has further besmirched the already low image of the country’s apex investigating agency. Sooner the last infliction of the UPA is out of the CBI, the better it will be for the restoration of some of its lost credibility. Hopefully, the next incumbent will be free from the taint of a crooked political connection. Martin Knapmeyer of the German Aerospace Centre, DLR, said yesterday that sound was recorded by instruments in the lander’s feet. Scientists are carefully analysing data collected during Philae’s 60-hour operation on the comet, which already yielded evidence of plentiful frozen ice and organic molecules on 67P. Researchers at the Universities of Glasgow and Lisbon and Mosaiques Diagnostics in Germany teamed-up to study the effect of olive oil, a Mediterranean diet staple, on heart health in a group of non-consumers. The study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was set up to examine the effect of phenolics, natural compounds found in plants, including olives, on heart health. Phenolics, along with monounsaturated fatty acids, are thought by the Federal Drug Administration in the US and European Food Safety Authority to be responsible for the protective effect of olive oil. The researchers recruited 69 healthy volunteers who were split into two groups and asked to consume 20ml of olive oil either low or high in phenolics every day over a six-week period. A particular feature of the study was the target group studied: healthy individuals who did not regularly consume olive oil. The research team applied a new diagnostic technology to study the impact of the oil supplements on health: urine samples were examined for a range of peptides (produced by the breakdown of proteins) already identified as indicators or bio markers of diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic kid- ney disease (CKD) and diabetes. The results showed that both groups saw a big improvement in scores for CAD – the most common form of heart disease. Dr Emilie Combet of the School of Medicine at the University of Glasgow, said: What we found was that regardless of the phenolic content of the oil, there was a positive effect on CAD scores’. In the population studied, any olive oil, low or high in phenolics, seems to be beneficial. Advani & co impress in World Snooker Have to try harder with white, says Anand Sochi, Nov 21: Despite being down 4-5 with just three more games to go, Viswanathan Anand said he was fine with an easy draw in the ninth game and insisted that he still has a chance of posting a win in the World Chess Championship match. You have to just play the positions you get, the situations you get. I can count, I know the score but I think I still have some chances,’ Anand said at the post-match conference after the ninth game ended in a quick draw. Asked about the level of confidence at this point, the fivetime world champion said, Quite reasonable. I just have to try harder with white,’ Anand said, pointing to his remaining two white games in the last three rounds. A lot of this (theory) is known, this idea is often met with Bishop move, but I didn’t really expect it. On the shortest game in the match so far, lasting barely an hour, Carlsen said, It was very short indeed, I didn’t quite see what to do in this (final) position, he is better prepared than I am.’ We let them off the hook, says Southee Dubai, Nov 21 (AFP): Ross Taylor hit a return-toform half-century to help New Zealand recover after Sarfraz Ahmed hit a fighting hundred for Pakistan in the second Test in Dubai on Thursday. Taylor was 77 not out for his 23rd fifty to help his team recover from a shaky 79-4 to close the fourth day on 167 for 6, having an overall lead of 177 with four wickets intact. Mark Craig (nought) was in Taylor’s company as New Zealand will seek a serieslevelling win in the three-Test series on an intriguing final day. Pakistan won the first Test by 248 runs in Abu Dhabi last week. Meanwhile, Tim Southee, who rocked the Pakistan line-up before wicket-keeper Sarfaraz Ahmed led the fightback with a ton, said We started so well and we got those three wickets and then unfortunately we couldn’t quite, I guess, deliver the finishing blow there.’ They batted well, I think Sarfraz batted extremely well with the tail and worked the strike nicely and batted a good tempo. So they deserve some credit but I also think that we didn’t quite get it right all the time in that first session.’ Sarfraz’s 112 led Pakistan’s fightback as they managed 393 in their first innings in reply to New Zealand’s 403, conceding a slender 10-run lead. Pakistani spinners Zulfiqar Babar (3 for 60) and Yasir Shah (3 for 65) had jolted New Zealand but Taylor stood firm. Babar removed Brendon McCullum (45), Kane Williamson (11) and Jimmy Neesham (11) in another display of beguiling left-arm spin on a Dubai stadium pitch which is taking notable turn. Bengaluru, Nov 21 (PTI): Top Indian cueists Pankaj Advani and Kamal Chawla registered routine wins to give the home fans enough smiles on the second day of the IBSF World Snooker Championship here yesterday. Smarting from having given away two frames in his 4-2 win on Wednesday, Advani did not take his foot off the pedal to humble Chi Wai of Hong Kong 4-0. Hot favourite to pick up his 13th world title, India’s poster boy of cue sports never faltered once in his 99(47)-24, 67(45)39, 65(53)-0, 84(63)-45 victory. Madhya Pradesh cueist Chawla, bronze medallist in 2011 Bangalore Championship and now playing with a bandaged finger, was on the fast lane to finish line with a 3-0 lead against Marwan Alfalasi of the UAE before he came across a speed breaker. On the women’s table, eight-time national champion Vidya Pillai showed no Indian hospitality to a hapless Fernando Irinen of Brazil, demolishing her 3-0 with a 44 break. IPTL boss not concerned over Federer injury Singapore, Nov 21 (AFP): The head of the new International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) shrugged off concerns over Roger Federer’s fitness yesterday as the Swiss star battles a back injury. Founder and managing director Mahesh Bhupathi said he had received reassurances from Federer’s camp as the clock ticks down to the innovative tournament’s debut season. We spoke to them. He’s fine, he’s playing Davis Cup this weekend,’ Bhupathi told AFP in Singapore, one of four venues for the IPTL which starts in Manila next week. A possible withdrawal by Federer, who pulled out of Sunday’s World Tour Finals decider but is playing the Davis Cup final against France this weekend, would be a major blow to the IPTL. Rafael Nadal, who is recovering from appendix surgery, is the notable absentee in a tournament which features a who’swho of current and former tennis stars. Bhupathi said he hoped the made-for-TV IPTL, which puts a limit on match-times and features a shot-clock, DJs and cheerleaders, would become a strong draw for players even at the end of a long season. We’ve created this exciting format and they’ll hopefully schedule us along with the four Slams and they can work around it,’ he said at the launch of the Singapore Slammers team. People say that the season is long but we’re creating something that is exciting enough for them to come so that they’ll automatically schedule us.’ Doubts have been raised over the viability and format of the tournament, which has ties of five single-set matches in men’s and women’s singles, mixed doubles, men’s doubles and men’s veterans. Teams representing Manila, Singapore, New Delhi and Dubai will play each other in the four cities in a minileague packed into a compact schedule of about three weeks. Pune gains from tie’ against Bangalore Bangalore, Nov 21 (PTI): Pune Marathas made a remarkable recovery from 0-2 down to win their next three matches in a row as their contest against Bangalore Raptors ended in a thrilling tie to run away with a bonus point in the Champions Tennis League here yesterday. Marcos Baghdatis played superb tennis against Feliciano Lopez to win the super tie-breaker as the five-match contest ended 24-24 at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Stadium. Both played their hearts out and hardly showed any signs of fatigue as they played three -- the mixed doubles, men’s doubles and men’s singles -- of the five sets of the fixture. It was the Cypriot Baghdatis who prevailed over Spaniard Lopez in a nerve-wracking encounter which saw each of them refusing to yield any inch. While the Spaniard produced some exquisite flat returns, Baghdatis regaled the the motley spectators with his fine overhead placements. Bagdatis and India’s Saketh Myneni then defeated Lopez and Ramkumar Ramanathan of India 6-4 in men’s doubles. Earlier, impressive wins by Thomas Enqvist and the mixed doubles pair of Venus Williams and Feliciano Lopez helped Bangalore Raptors take a 15-12 lead over Pune Marathas.
