PASTORAL MESSAGE The stroke of midnight on December 31st brings with it the desire to make the most out of the New Year. Many of us spend the time leading up to the New Year reflecting on the year gone by and identifying past joys and troubles. We make conscious decisions to start new diets, to sign up for a gym memberships, to try to quit smoking, or to save more. The New Year is a new start. This is all to say that January highlights our desire to change. In that light, I am going to take a slightly different approach to January’s Pastoral Message. Usually I look at the major feast or celebration within a month and try to create a small sermonette using the ecclesiastical events of the month. Instead I would like to talk about change. As in our lives, January will see some changes in the parish, and it is my desire to introduce them and explain the reasoning behind them here. First, and most excitingly, our parish will be welcoming Michael Kallis as our Youth Director. Michael graduated from the Seminary this past summer, and has continued his studies in Greece for the past semester. He has worked for numerous Archdiocesan Youth Ministries in the past, including Crossroad, HCHC Ambassadors, and multiple Summer Camps. He will be a wonderful asset to our parish and I look forward to the beautiful relationships he will be cultivating with our young members. Our parishioners will see a few changes to the Divine Liturgy that I would like to explain. In order to insure that our Church School students have an adequate amount of time for class, and that they are all arriving to class at relatively the same time, we will begin dismissing the Church School students for communion first. We ask that parents of older children remain in their pews until all the children have received, while parents with young children can accompany them to receive before returning to their pews. Two additional liturgical adjustments will begin in January. You may have noticed that there are prayers in our Liturgy books that are marked as silent prayers of the priest, and yet I read most of them aloud. Silent prayers within communal worship is actually a later modification to the service. In fact, in the 6th century St. Justinian Emperor of Constantinople set forth a law making it illegal for any clergymen to perform the Liturgy with silent prayers. In this light, we would like to reintroduce the practice of reading the prayers of consecration aloud, with the entire community responding “Amen” to each of the three petitions of consecration. One Priest Choir/Chanters sing “Come let us worship…” at Small Entrance Priest does not cense after Small Entrance Priest does not chant after the Small Entrance Multiple Priests Priests sing “Come let us worship…” at Small Entrance Priest censes after Small Entrance Priests chants 1st and last Hymn after Small Entrance Agios O Theos (3 Times) Agios O Theos (5 times with Priests chanting #3 & 5) The second liturgical shift that you might notice in January is one that completes a series of changes that you might have already picked up on, but perhaps did not know the reasoning or their interconnection. These changes are based on the number of priests that are serving at a given Liturgy (deacons, while members of the clergy, do not factor into this count). The rubrics for how to conduct certain aspects of the Liturgy change when two or more priests are serving together. Currently we use a mixture, doing some things according to the single priest guidelines, and others according to the multiple priest guidelines. My hope is to establish consistence in our observation of these rubrics. Here is a little chart to show you how the number of serving priests affects the Liturgy. Panagiotis Parish Council News January, 2015 Happy New Year! I hope your Christmas and New Year holiday season brought happiness, good health, and hope to you and your families. On December 7th, the parish held its annual election of the parish council. Nine of the eighteen seats were up for election and we had fourteen highly qualified candidates run. Congratulations to returning council members, Chris Atsaves, Fritz Freidinger, Jim Gottreich, Christy Gouletas, Nick Mechales, George Nassos, and Demete Papson. Also elected and will be serving the parish as council members for the first time are Frank Andreou and Louis Pappamichiel. I would also like to express my thanks and appreciation to the other candidates for their candidacy and interest in serving our parish. The new council will be sworn in at Liturgy on Sunday, January 4th, followed by a council meeting to elect officers for the coming year. We look forward to a busy and productive year. I would also like to thank George Pontikes, the chairman of the elections committee, and his committee members for organizing and running a very efficient and professional election. It is with great pleasure that I announce the hiring of Michael Kallis as our new youth director. Michael is a 2012 graduate of the Hellenic College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies and a 2014 graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, as a Master of Divinity. He has extensive training and experience in youth related activities. Among his experiences include the coordination of several youth retreat camps both through the Hellenic College and in his home Metropolis of Detroit. His presence will provide Fr. Panagiotis with much needed assistance and a focused responsibility on the nurturing and spiritual development of our youth. Please help me welcome Michael and his wife Anna to our community. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend our Godparents Sunday Liturgy and event on February 15th. As we have done twice before, there will be a lunch served, along with bowling and bocce at Pinstripes in Northbrook following Liturgy. This is a great opportunity for Godchildren and Godparents to get together for worship and fellowship. This event is not only for those with Godchildren, but open and encouraged for the entire parish community. Jim Santos President, Parish Council Athletic Update Wanted to update the Parish regarding the Athletic Ministry. We began to form teams in Early October. Our season began on November 4th and we just finished the Thanksgiving Tournament. We have 111 children enrolled in the Athletic program spread across 6 different age groups. There are 30 players on the 3/4th grade co-ed team, 28 players on the 5/6th grade co-ed team, 13 players on the 7/8th grade team, 12 players on the Girls team, 15 players on the High School boys team and 15 players on the Men's team. The Men's team is comprised of College and older kids. I wish to congratulate the 5/6th grade and the Girls team for finishing 2nd in the GOAL Metropolis of Chicago Thanksgiving Tournament. As you can see with 111 active players….our Basketball program has turned into a very vibrant Ministry. It has been great fun for me to watch these kids and parents participate, bond together, form friendships and increase their participation in the other youth Ministries at our Parish. Want to thank our 10 coaches (John Hatzigiannis, Pete Maris, Pete Petrakis, Dan Garbis, Angelo Costas, Rob Mastros, Jim Kanellos, Jim Limperis and John Buscemi) for all their help and support for our program. Our season will end in -February and I will update the Parish on our progress after the season ends. If you are age 40 and over and still like to play, we have open gym on Wednesday evenings from 8:30 to 10:00 where we play pick-up games. We have been averaging 10-14 "old timers" every week.
