Michael Laidler 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A 18th / 19 19th October 2014 BISHOP JOSEPHвЂ™S PARISH VISIT As many of you know Bishop Joseph Oudeman, auxiliary Bishop Brisbane, has just completed a pastoral visit to our parish. He couldn't meet everyone for obvious reasons but he did his best to touch base with quite a number. Bishop Joe spent all of Friday visiting our Catholic schools and meeting with staff and some students. He commented on the quality of Principals of each school and had a chance to dialogue with the school leadership. Bishop Joe was particularly impressed with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd initiative and was able to spend a couple of hours at the Atrium on Saturday morning. The Bishop was heard to say "the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has the potential to change the lives of the young children and their families". We are indeed blessed to have the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium. It is more than a building. It is a place in which our children can come to meet Jesus the Good Shepherd in a practical hands-on way. The Catechesis is based on Montessori principles of education allowing the children to use and develop their senses. I encourage parishioners to make time and arrange through Angela Williams our director (via the parish office) to visit the Atrium and see for yourselves what this parish is trying to achieve in the ongoing faith development of our children. Several families have described the initiative as a "God send" and indeed it is! The Bishop also had an opportunity to listen to the members of the Parish Mission Council and members of the Finance Board. Two mission councillors, Graham Bousen and Helen Goldsmith gave a little presentation on where we have come from in terms of the pastoral plan of three years ago and where we would like to take the parish now given the new ideas gleaned from attendance of Parish Mission Councillors at the recent Proclaim conference in Chatswood. The Bishop responded by making the point that things cannot remain the way they are in the church in general. We have to become more missionary, by looking out into the world and engaging with it. He reminded us of the call of Pope Francis for the church to be in the world even if the church is not of the world. Pope Francis expects us to "get our hands dirty" not by judging people but by loving them even in their sinfulness. Jesus did and we should too! Bishop Joe had a non-stop 3 days. I've only referred in detail to a few of his activities here. Bishop Joe presided at four parish masses, had coffee with parishioners in the our coffee shop, farewelled Fr Paul Taubman, visited our new emerging Stella Maris Church at Broadbeach, celebrated the birthday of a 100 year old parishioner, and a hosted a dinner with the Deanery priests (12 priests). I am grateful to Bishop Joe for his presence amongst us and for his kind words of praise for the parish we are. There is something very special about you the people of this parish and I thank you for your active participation in so many areas of parish life. How to Act Appropriately in a Catholic Church This is an edited excerpt from an article by Anthony Kain, PP Glenelg and Plympton Parishes, Adelaide, published in Liturgy News, September 2014 edition. Over the next few weeks, an edited version of the article will be presented. This is not to create вЂ�liturgical vigilantesвЂ™. This is to invite us to pause and think about how we do what we do in the sacred space that is the church building in preparing to celebrate the liturgies of the Church. Hospitality, humility, acceptance of and respect for the other over rides all. вЂњA Starting Place: Even before the celebration itself, it is commendable that silence be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the vesting room, and in the adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred action in a devout and fitting manner (GIRM 45). A sober place to open this topic. Key to getting started is that phrase вЂ�so that all may dispose themselvesвЂ¦вЂ™ This presupposes that вЂ�allвЂ™ are there to carry out the action that the liturgy presents, that all are вЂ�devoutвЂ™ and they have an idea of what a вЂ�fitting mannerвЂ™ is. But we can no longer take this for granted. In this pluralistic country, even in such things as when to stand and sit, the priest will need to give directions, especially for the people in the front pews at first communion, weddings or funerals! There has been a dramatic change over the years in what people do when they enter a church. Reverent silence frequently gives way to a vocal, chatty atmosphere. I wonder if a вЂ�causeвЂ™ of this change (perhaps a subconscious reason) is that previously people said nothing in the liturgy, with the dialogue limited to the priest and server. Silent spectators were suddenly very involved in speaking prayer out loudвЂ¦ so we talk!вЂќ Remember to wear your name badge if you have one. This assists those of us who are a tad forgetful with names. It also assists the building of community. Safe organisations exhibit an extended culture of guardianship through loving vigilance and the implementation of key safeguarding elements вЂ“ Safe Recruitment & Selection Practices: Code of Ethical Behaviour: Safe Activities: Responsible Management Disclosure: Mandatory Reporting. The implementation of the Policy in parishes in the Archdiocese of Brisbane is mandatory. A training program of approximately three hours is available to parishes to explain the policy, along with expectations and procedures for compliance and monitoring of best practices in parishes. Participants in training will include all clergy, and parish staff, as well as volunteers who coordinate work with children, young people and vulnerable adults, in order for parishes to develop an extended culture of guardianship, and to address past behaviours which have caused harm, trauma and distress . If you are interested in sponsoring this item for your family or a loved one the cost is $4,500. Many items have been donated. The Reconciliation furniture was sponsored by holiday makers from Melbourne last week. There are only 20 pews left to be sponsored. At a recent funeral it was the wish of the family for friends and family to contribute to a pew in memory of their loved one rather than give flowers. We also welcome Brandon, William, Brodie Summer, Sebastien, Theresa, Jason and Eliah who will receive Baptism preparation in the coming term.
