The children enthusiastically participated in the parade and the mass drill. Games and races were conducted for both the children and their parents. BUNNY DAY AT CHETTINAD VIDYALAYA YOGA WORKSHOP A free yoga workshop on �Complete fitness through yoga’ was organised by Dharpana Yoga Mandiram on Nov 29 at its premises on Ranga Road, Mylapore. The session was conducted by physiotherapist and yoga instructor - Dr. Venkat. Participants were introduced to basic yoga postures and pranayama techniques. Manual therapy assessment and treatment sessions were offered to candidates with musculoskeletal pain conditions. ARIVUKKALANJIYAM AWARD CEREMONY The 24th Arivukkalanjiyam award ceremony organised by MTS Academy, BVB and Nehru Yuva Kendra was held at BVB, Mylapore on Dec 6. Today, there isn’t a place in the city of ours which oozes with the December spirit. Shopping malls raise giant Christmas trees, draw out colourful buntings and play carols in the lobby but the zing does not touch you. We go about windowshopping on Level 2 or head to Escape’s dark halls. I am content with something simple and small to apprciate the season’s colours - a walk or a slow drive down San Thome High Road after the traffic has died down and the skies are clear and starry. Many institutions here string out the stars and paper boxes, with lights inside them, hanging them from trees and walls and terrace tops. In the December darkness, they are a visual treat. The folks at St. Bede’s and at the Cathedral, the congregation at St Thomas’ English and St. Thomas’ Tamil Church and a few stores here have already illuminated their spaces. They remind us that it is Christmastime. Yesterday, we saw men working on the flag-mast at the Cathedral, raising a scaffolding on which little bulbs have been hung. When it comes alive, this will add to the colours of this road. I wish every house, store and campus on this road put up a few stars or erected a Christmas tree or stretched out some colourful buntings - imagine the sights you could behold when you drove down this way. For many years, members of an auto stand in a corner fronting the �kuppam’ in this area have put up a large crib and illuminated it - and the effort has been appreciated. Festivals are occasions when a community-driven effort can spread the spirit among its people. And give character to a neighbourhood. In the old days, government offices were fully illuminated on Independence and Republic Days. Central Station, Ripon Building, Southern Railways headquarters, General Hospital... the buildings on the Marina beach road and some private complexes on Mount Road. Hundreds of families would travel out to these areas of the city after dusk to enjoy the illumination. These were great attractions at a time when shopping malls and suburban amusement centres were yet to come up. We must not look to the state or a private enterprise to make our neighbourhoods colourful. A few enterprising souls and a few more positive-minded groups can make that difference. Meanwhile, wouldn’t you like to hang a bright, red star on the porch on in the balcony? And play Santa Claus to surprise your kids to create a memorable moment? 7 Dr. R. Bhaskaran, one of the oldest residents of Abhiramapuram passed away on December 2. He was 89. Born the second son to Ponnammal and senior advocate K. V. Ramachandra Iyer, he had a sister and two brothers. He grew up in the tradition-filled household near Sanskrit College in Mylapore, studied at P. S. High School and went to Presidency College. After his graduation, he secured a gold medal in BVSC and GMVC. His passion for research prompted him to join a research institute at Mukhteswar, Uttarkand, where he did his masters. Dr. Bhaskaran later joined CLRI and worked as the head of the department, microbiology, and secured a doctorate. Under the aegis of CLRI, he published numerous research papers and guided students in doctoral research. He also represented India at many international seminars and won accolades as an eminent microbiologist which paved the way for him becoming the chief tchnical expert in F.A.O., United Nations. He was stationed in Republic of Mali and subsequently in Niger before his return to India. An endeavor close to his heart was the Narayana Tirtha festival at Thirupunthuruti, near Thanjavur Dr. Bhaskaran married Malathi at an early age and they shared similar interests. His wife passed away a couple of years ago. They leave behind two daughters and a son. FOOD/CRAFT BAZAAR 2 A food and craft bazaar is on at the craft basket till Jan 5. SENIORS MEET AND GREET FOR CHRISTMAS The senior members of the Golden Years Club got together on Dec 14 to celebrate Christmas at St. Bede’s school campus in San Thome. They participated in games, pot - luck snacking and carol singing. The members also exchanged gifts to celebrate the joy of Christmas. 3. AT THE CATHEDRAL . . . 3 Four large candles with a wreath around them front the main altar at the San Thome Cathdral. These symbolize the four weeks of Advent which lead to Christmas - a time when people reflect and spiritually prepare themselves for the celebration. A giant crib is also being erected in the stage on this campus. It will be opened on Christmas-eve and will be open to all, till early January. 4. SHARING WITH THE NEEDY Madras Christian Federation, who have been celebrating Christmas with the needy and underprivileged for almost 25 years, organised yet another event this year at the San Thome Community Service Center on Dec 14. The guests of honour were Dr. A. F. Selvam, director, Dr. Selvams Eye Care Clinic and industrialist Dr. J. M. H. Hassan Moulana. About 250 people received dhotis and sarees after which a sumptuous lunch was served. 5. CHRISTMAS PARTY AT VANILLA Vanilla Place hosted its annual Christmas party at its premises on Dec 14. Children took part in Christmas games, rode on the open horse carriage driven by Santa Claus and visited the North Pole to take a picture with Santa. They also wrote down their wishes for him and decorated cookies. About 100 families also participated in live carol singing along with Vanilla’s band of musicians. Now one portion of this relaid road has been excavated by civic agency staff to understand major repairs. The portion, though marked out by dividers can pose a danger. Will the portion be cemented once work is completed? - R. Vivek, Alwarpet. Flimsy �covers-up’ of sinking portion of two main roads The two sinking areas of main roads got some attention but how! St. Marys Road pit ( at Hameedia store) was covered with bitumen mortar. (without any repair to the underground channels which are the cause for this sinking). R. K. Mutt Road zone, opposite BSNL office was also topped with waste materials without any repair to the underground channels which are the cause for sinking, Is this not a sham? Pat for ration shop staff The other day, I went to the ration shop at Abhiramapuram ( C. P. Ramaswamy Road) for pasting a new sheet in the ration card. There were 3 staff members and hence the process was swift. It took hardly 2 minutes per person and the queue moved fast. Parking lots are too big Traffic Police have marked out spaces for parking on North Mada Street - with fresh paint. It appears as if one third of the road is for parking of vehicles. S., Mylapore Readers’ letters seem to have some effect Kudos to Mylapore Times for publishing two letters narrating the consumers difficulties with the gas companies while linking their bank account numbers with gas connection numbers for availing the subsidy. This must have brought a change in the attitude in the minds of the gas supplier. I am also a consumer with the South Madras Gas Agency. On 12th Dec. I received a SMS in my mobile that the gas company is open on Sunday for receiving application from consumers for bank account linking. After reading the letters in your newspaper with a degree of apprehension; I approached South Madras Gas Company on Sunday. To my surprise I was given a warm welcome. They accepted my application after a brief scrutiny and my work was over in a couple of minutes. Looks like readers’ letters had a positive effect. - S Kailasam, R. K. Head to Annai Organic and Naturals at Luz Church Road. The recently opened store has a lot from provisions and juices to cosmetics and household items. The owner M. N. Rajendran, a registered naturopath and cell therapist, has been practising naturopathy since 1994. He says, “My parents were my inspiration. I grew up believing that nature has the cure for most of our ailments”. He opened his first organic store in Madipakkam in 2004 and another one in Adyar in 2006. His products are acquired from all over India and some are also imported. So how does he choose his products? He says, “Two things are very important for a good organic product - the soil and the seed. Kurinji soil - found near hills is believed to be the best kind for organic products. Food cultivated on this soil is believed to have medicinal properties. Most of my products are grown on this kind of soil. The seed should not be a hybrid or genetically modified. If these two factors are taken care of, you can be rest assured that the product is a natural and fresh organic product”. So what does the store have? Rajendran says, “Our store is an organic supermarket. We stock more than 70 different varieties of rice and about 13 varieties of millet like varagu (kodomillet), samai (little millet), phini (foxtail millet), kuthirai vali (barnyard millet), bajra and ragi. We also have certain rare gluten free products like buckwheat, raajgera, singada and amaranth”. Fresh organic vegetables are sold from 11 a.m. everyday. The store also sells cosmetics like organic kajal, facewash, showergel, shampoo made of out neem and aloe vera and 12 varieties of soap. Products like flaxseed, chiaseed, hempseed, cold pressed extra virgin oil made out of sesame, coconut, groundnut, sunflower, mustard, olive and certain rare types of oil made out of hazelnut, grapeseed, walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seeds are also available at the store. Snack lovers can feast on treats like home made murukkus, peanut balls and biscuits.  Rajendran says, “Diabetic care and cure food are available here. Herbal juices like amla, aloe vera, neem, bailey grass, tulsi, wheatgrass, noni, heart care and glucowin joice are our specialities. We also carry a unique product Calpamrit juice which is a combination of tulsi, amla, aloe vera, ginger, ashwaganda, giloi, bilva and several other ingredients”. Different varieties of vinegar (apple cider, balsamic, red wine), jam, honey, juice, pasta, noodles, and all aroma health and beauty products are also sold here. Rajendran says, “We also sell organic dishwashing gel, washing powders and floor cleaners.
