We are a Tithing Parish The Baptism of The Lord World Meeting of Families Patron Saints Saint John Paul II and Saint Gianna have been chosen as the two worthy Patron Saints to guide all in preparation and participation of this international event as they fully embody the history, mission and theme of the World Meeting of Families 2015.— Archbishop Charles J. Chaput Saint John Paul II—In 1979, Saint John Paul II was the first pope to visit Philadelphia, where he said Mass on Logan Circle for nearly one million people filling the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In 1994, he celebrated the first World Meeting of Families in Rome, which aimed to strengthen the sacred bonds of family across the globe. Upon his canonization, he was declared “the pope of the family.” Saint Gianna Beretta Molla— A pediatrician and mother of four, Saint Gianna is best known for her selfless love as a mother, giving her life to bear her fourth child in 1962. She was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in 2004. Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint for mothers, physicians and unborn children. Her life was a testament to “the family fully alive,” the theme for the World Meeting of Families—2015. World Meeting of FamiliesMorning & Evenings Sessions for Preparation The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting World Meeting of Families, in September 2015, which will culminate with a visit from our Holy Father, Pope Francis. This event which occurs only once every 3 years, and was initiated by St John Paul II, brings people together from around the world to pray, learn, and embrace the importance of the family, in its many shapes and sizes, and recognize it as a critical foundation to our global society. In preparation of the event ALL are welcomed and encouraged to attend the sessions being offered here at SPX. The morning sessions dates are: Wednesdays, 11:30am-12;45pm on 1/14, 2/11, 3/11, 4/15, 5/13, 6/17, 7/15, 8/12 and 9/2. Call Rita at 610-5435348 if you have questions. The evening sessions will meet once per month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm in the SPX Dowd Center in the church basement. Our first session will be Wednesday, 1/7/15, and will serve as an information night. The universal guide created for this event, "Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive" will be available during the information session. If you do not have a copy of the book, you will receive a free copy at the meeting. Each chapter covers a different subject yet is complementary to the others. Registration is not required and there is no fee for participation. The subsequent sessions will follow on the 1st Wednesday of each month: 2/4; 3/4; 4/1; 5/6; and 6/3. We hope you will join us, and please invite a family member or friend as we prepare for this unique opportunity to share in this very special and important event. If you have any questions, please email either: Chas DeFeo [email protected]; Bernie Long [email protected] ; or Trisha Brown [email protected]. If you have missed any of the meetings, you are welcome to join us anyway! 181—Saint Pius X Page 4 January 11, 2015 The Baptism of The Lord Dear Sisters & Brothers, Today the Church celebrates The Baptism of the Lord. Water is the most abundant substance on earth. We drink it, we wash with it, we play in it, we transport on it, we grow food with it, we dilute with it, we sit on a shore and dream with it. Consider any given day and how often water comes into play. Yet, unless the water is shut off to our homes or places of work, we seldom think about it. It’s just there—everywhere and all the time. Water is so easy to take for granted. Given the abundance and usefulness of water, it ought to be no surprise that our first sacrament, baptism, uses water as its primary symbol. And just like the water around us, we can so easily take our baptism for granted. Today’s Feast and gospel can be a reminder to us that we can never take either water or our baptism for granted. We mark the end of this Christmas Season with this feast of the Lord’s Baptism. May we all keep the flame of Christ that dwells within us, because of our Baptism, bright and cheerful in our life’s journey. As we end this Christmas Season, please accept my thanks and the thanks of Father Waters, Monsignor Jagodzinski and Father Weber for all the nice and thoughtful Christmas greetings, spiritual enrollments, tasty Christmas goodies, and gifts that have been extended to us. We are humbled, grateful, and appreciative of your kindness to us. Please pray for us. Know that we do pray and remember all of you at Mass. May God bless you and yours in 2015. As we end this Christmas Season, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia recognizes Catechists who have reached milestones in service to the parish CCD. Sing to the Lord, praise his name! Could the psalm be any clearer? There can be no doubt that we are all called to sing the Lord’s praises, whether in our pew singing congregational hymns and psalms, or in the choir loft singing specially prepared music which praises His name in a very intense way. Our choir season has begun for this liturgical year, but it is not at all too late to add your voice to that of the faithful members of our SPX adult choir. We would really love to have you join us! Choir rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:00 until about 8:30 and sings each week at either the Saturday vigil, or the 9:30, or the 11:30 Sunday Masses as well as at special festive liturgies throughout the year. We are in special need of MEN’S voice. You need not be able to read music to join, just to be able to match pitches. You don’t even need to be to be able to be at every rehearsal and every Mass we sing...we practice each piece many times so that all will be comfortably familiar before we perform it. Please give serious thought to adding your voice to ours, especially if you have had some experience singing in school, or church, or even in a well-tuned shower stall. If you would like further information, please call Bob Jones at 610-357-0047, or email [email protected] or just climb the stairs at the rear of the church up to the choir loft any Thursday night. We’ll be looking for you! Mark your calendars now for the 21st Annual Mom Heart of the Home Spring Day of Renewal on March 21, 2015 from 9am to 3:30pm at Sts.
