Commodore’s Report
Hello All,
I hope everyone is well amongst the membership and families,
although we know that Bruce Lamb is not and I’m sure we all
send him our best wishes and hope for recovery. Both Bruce and
Val have had the worst luck health-wise and must be wondering
how it could happen to them. Also last year’s regular sailing
member Howard Harker has had a long-running illness and last I
heard has gone to live near family in Mooloolaba and has taken
“Altaire” up there too.
On a more cheerful front, Norm Winkworth, who was another
regular sailor from Iluka before moving to Murwillumbah, has
bought himself a Careel 22 that needs some TLC and hopes to be
back with us after some work on the boat. It was good to see Bob
Ey again last Friday who sold his boat “Bright Eyes” some time ago
but is back to sail again as crew. A couple of new members are in
the process of signing up including one with extensive sailing
experience but no boat. He is in the market for a small trailersailer, preferably a folk boat or similar, so if you know of one I’ll
pass the info on.

The PYYC executive met with the junior sailing administration as
requested by the previous members’ meeting in November. It
was an information sharing, fact finding, clearing the air meeting.
The extensive agenda included the intention to formally
recognise the junior sailing division and sub-committee in our
constitution and club rules, agreeing on what reporting the
juniors need to make to the executive and members in relation to
on-water and other activities, correspondence, minutes of
meetings, accounting, purchases, assets, etc., and also to try and
get more integration of junior family members with senior
members through common interests, joint functions and using
club facilities rather than going elsewhere. We all recognised the
hard work, enthusiasm and in some cases considerable amounts
of money and free labour put in by the administration to make
the junior sailing so successful after just 2½ years. In the end it
was a very constructive exercise while also resulting in some
compromise which was reported to the members’ meeting and
generally accepted by members on 2 February.
The intention at this time is to give the statutory 21 day’s notice
of a Special Meeting to agree to amend the constitution
accordingly, with the meeting to be held immediately prior to the
next Members’ Meeting on Monday 13 April. The notice and
schedule of amendments will be forwarded by e-mail.

We had a great Australia Day, but unfortunately at two venues
due to a lapse in communication. Over 30 members attended the
club house on a very hot and humid day. It started at 10.00am
with most staying until 3.00pm and a few diehards until rather
later. The new huge BBQ, spotted by Garry at the Wellspring op
shop and donated by them, worked like a charm with more food
than we could eat. Being so hot outside, we had the Austrailan
Open tennis on TV, indoor thong throwing with the target being a
certain females behind (I swear there is still one missing) and four
games of Bingo with a bottle of wine for the winners. Some
members spent the day at Moriarty’s Beach with their boats and
thankfully they had a good day there too.
The deal with Steven Chivers and the Flight Centre at Grafton has
been finalised and Bill should be putting something about it in
this issue. Essentially for every travel package booked through
Steven the club gets a “kick back” of 1% of the cost. The Flight
Centre has a lowest price guarantee and all we have to say is that
we were referred by the PYYC. It doesn’t even matter if you are a
member or not, so pass this information on to family and friends
who may be travelling soon and try Steven out for a good deal.
The first spinnaker race since Christmas is on this Sunday 8
February and then the calendar is full on including the Easter
Regatta in April and the Founding Fathers Regatta in June.

Andrew Passmore and his sailing committee are meeting and
planning for these events which have been growing rapidly again
over the past few years. Hopefully as many members as possible
will take to the water and show the flag as we are getting a bit
outnumbered.
See you on the water,

Vice Commodore Report
Hi all, new year is starting with twilight racing starting on 4th of
Feb and Sunday series starting on 8th Feb, also Junior sailing is
kicking off again on Sat 7th Feb.
We have had a great turnout for our one off Wednesday racing
over the holiday season as well with good numbers.
Letting everyone know Easter Regatta is only 8 weeks away so get
your boats ready for a great weekend of sailing.
Hopefully we will have good numbers again this year.
Short but sweet this month will hope to have more info in next
edition.
Don’t forget Big River Sailing Club Regatta is on the 14th and 15th
of Feb, our junior division will be having a camp out and racing
over the weekend as well.

Junior Sailing Report
As usual, Junior Sailing took a break over the school holidays
but we are now getting ready to go again, with some clear tasks
and challenges ahead in the coming months. We met with the
Executive team on 12 January for a lively and productive
meeting (if you want to liven up your life, join a committee,
that’s what I say!) to talk about the Junior program and our
relationship with the broader club. I think the general view at
the end of the meeting was that we were all clearer about roles
and responsibilities and that the integration of junior and
general club members was not without its challenges due to us
providing a service for children, whose needs don’t always fit
within the wider club activities. Anyway, nobody was injured in
the meeting and we all remain ready and able to move into the
2015 season.
I mentioned challenges and tasks – these are to engage more
families to join the program, having gained a few and lost a few
over the past year. We really want to focus on kids in the 9-12
year age group and will be targeting some publicity in the local
media and local schools to this end. We can’t spread the net
too wide, however, due to our second challenge – ensuring that
we have enough suitably experienced, trained, cleared and
child-focussed instructors! At the present time we have the
(Continued on page 10)

rather wonderful team of Scott, Tim, Scooter and Shane, with
the occasional help of Kev and Andrew P. The problem is that our
main 4 instructors are all super-busy, with three of them working
away on a regular basis. At the moment, if Tim, Scott and
Scooter are away we just can’t sail.
So, we’re looking for volunteers to help. In order to take kids out
on boats as an instructor you need to:
like being around kids – they don’t listen, they jump all over the
boat – they need to have fun whilst learning!
be able to sail a dinghy
be willing to complete the YA instructors course
be able to commit fairly regularly (at least one Saturday a
month)
have Working with Children clearance (free and easy to apply)
If that sounds like YOU or you can pass the word to some funloving person then please let me know (0416 162 800)
The first dates are as follows:

Rear Commodore’s Report
The weather man struck again with a forecast of 85%
chance of rain and S-SE winds of 15-25k on Australia Day – not
very conducive to a BBQ at Moriartys, so with discretion being
the better part of valour, we decided to transfer the event to
the Club house.
As it turned out the rain held off until late in the day but the
winds did eventuate, so we were somewhat vindicated in the
decision, especially as a majority of attendees planned to be
ferried across and back on Bar Tender.
Even so, a number of boats, who had spent the weekend on the
water, ended up at Moriartys and had an enjoyable time.
Meanwhile, back at the Club we had around 30 members and
visitors partaking of the BBQ (ingredients supplied by the CVC),
games such as throwing thongs at an unnamed member's
derriere, and even our Commodore running a game of Bingo.
Plans are well under way for Easter but we'll keep the details
until the next edition of ATB. Just ensure that you all keep 3-6
April in your diary for a good time at your Club.

Hasn’t the weather been variable. I have looked at the forecasts
and now regret believing them. Both sailing and golfing
activities have suffered. Not to mention Australia Day.
I hope you enjoy the content provided by everyone to this
