Being God's family, then, calls us beyond our own individual family, our own parish or city, beyond social class. It is literally a family of everyone, open to everyone, for the sake of everyone. Let today's celebration shape us more fully as God's family, where the Lord's Table beckons all to be made one. In the context of family, this weekend in our parish we will conduct the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. The theme of the Appeal is: "One Faith. One Family”. It is a reminder of who we are, who we are called to be. Every time we say the creed, we reaffirm the fact that we are members of “one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church.” How often do we reflect on these words? The Appeal provides an opportunity to reflect on the fact that every Catholic is a part of their local Church or parish, and part of the universal Church. Each of us is responsible not only for our own parish, but also for the well-being of our Church throughout our diocese and the world. As “One Faith and One Family”, all are asked to give to this campaign that supports and provides critical funding to four very important ministries: pays for the education of our seminarians, helps the poor and those facing emergencies through Catholic Charities, provides support for designated Catholic schools, and enables new communications and evangelization to our faithful, our youth and young adults, and our fallen away brothers and sisters. Stewardship is an act of faith, it is at the heart of our lives as faithful members of the Church. It means we are ready to recognize all we have and all we are is a gift from God. How will you respond to His gifts to you? Today when you are handed an envelope at Mass, please make a pledge if your circumstances allow. Your gift should be something in addition to what you give to your parish. Every gift is important, and as one large family, we can do so much more! If you received your pledge form in the mail, and have already returned it, thank you! For those of you who did not receive a mailing or need more time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses again next weekend. As your Pastor, and a member of Bishop’s Advisory Stewardship Appeal Committee for the last 2 years, I want to assure you that the funds you contribute are deeply appreciated by our seminarians and the thousands of people who will benefit from your generosity. On behalf of Bishop Estévez and myself, I thank you for your generous contribution to the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. May God bless you! In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a Day of Prayer for Women and Men in Consecrated Life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, symbolizing Christ who is the Light of the World. So, too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church. I invite you to pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. In our parish, we are blessed with the ministry of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family. Grateful for their presence, it is my prayer that they may continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation. The Church also celebrates today - World Marriage Sunday - showing the fundamental importance of marriage and the family to the life of Christianity. This special day provides an opportunity to celebrate and to pray for the gift and blessing of marriage and to affirm and support engaged and married couples. Wednesday, February 11th is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick, an occasion of reflection and prayer for all those who suffer, but also for those who work in health care ministries. At the morning Mass we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Please join us and extend an invitation to those who suffer and to those who work in the medical field. Have a blessed week! With prayers, Fr. MAR CH 7, 2015 FATHER - DAUGHTER DANCE COME AND HAVE AN EVENING OF FUN, FOOD, AND MUSIC Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In 1565, a small band of Spanish explorers and priests celebrated Mass on the shores of North Florida in preparation for starting a settlement there. They named their new home St. Augustine in honor of the saint on whose feast day they sighted land. It was here our Catholic faith was firmly planted in this country. As we reflect on the importance of this year; let us remember if we truly believe in One Faith and act as One Family, we can continue to build the kingdom of God. When the history of the next 450 years is written, may it be said of us what good disciples we were! We faced economic uncertainty and shifting demographics; we faced threats to the church from society and scandal from within. We prayed and celebrated the Eucharist together. We invested in the life of the church through our sacrificial gifts. And through our efforts and the grace of God, people in our diocese came to know the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal enables our diocese to reach out to those who need to know the love of Jesus and his message of hope and salvation. It provides us with an opportunity to live as good stewards and to return a portion of the gifts God has blessed us with. I pray that each of you will give to this Appeal not because you are asked, but because you want to give – knowing that your gift is faith in action. We can do so much more when we serve him together. I am, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Felipe J. Estévez, S.T.D. SPIRITUAL GROWTH CORNER - THE BIBLE There are many ways to approach reading the Bible. You could, of course, start at Genesis and read your way through Revelation. It is one way to do it and millions of people do it this way every year. They start the year with a resolution to read the Bible, and they do, from start to finish. The primary problem with this approach is that the books are not even placed in chronological order, and so the bigger picture can be lost. The Bible was not assembled to be read from beginning to end. Start with the Gospels-Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. Don’t just read them once. Read them over and over, fifteen or twenty minutes a day, for a whole year. Allow the life and teachings of Jesus Christ to sink their roots deep into your heart, mind, soul, and life. Yet, Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what God wishes us to do. Yet, we Catholics should receive Holy Communion only when we are living in communion with the Catholic Church and in the state of sanctifying grace and have made the appropriate fast from food and drink. Because of the connection we draw between being in full communion with the Catholic Church and receiving Holy Communion, we cannot invite those who are not Catholic to share in Holy Communion with us. Still, we welcome all to this celebration of the Mass as our brothers and sisters, and pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit will one day draw us closer “..that all may be one.” (John 17:22). PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Loving God, You call all who believe in you to grow perfect in love by following in the footsteps of Christ Your Son. Call from among us more men and women who will joyfully serve You and your holy people as priests and religious. God moves in our hearts in a variety of ways, and brings many people to a desire to learn more about the Catholic Church and its lived faith and practices. This desire will lead many of you to enter into the process known as Rite of Christian Initiation. This journey will take place with others who share similar stirrings of the Spirit, and will be lead by Catholics who are grounded and knowledgeable about their faith and who are called by God to share this with you and walk with you on this journey of inquiry. Some of you will respond to an even deeper desire to become full and active participants, members of the Catholic Church and your journey will continue to include the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For these people, the sacraments of initiation usually take place at Easter or at a time that the readiness of these people is determined. The church encourages an ongoing conversion to Jesus Christ and the reign of God He proclaimed. The church wants to share its life with new members and offer them support and encouragement. What is the First Step? Adult Confirmation Preparation ~ A program is available for Baptized Catholic Adults, 18 years or older, who have received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist but HAVE NOT been Confirmed. Please contact Pat Noll at 282-3790. MASS FOR THE NATION March 7, 2015 ~ 8:30am “Someone recently asked me, why do I Pray for The Nation. Truthfully, how can I not? Most would agree that the sacrifices of our First Responders; the Men and Women of Uniform place themselves in harm’s way every time they respond to a call. Also their Brothers and Sisters of our Armed Forces, who are willing to put it all on the line as well. So many have given their all; the sacrifices they have made (PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE) are monumental. The very least I can do is to say a few Prayers for them. Furthermore, there is no question that we as Christians, Roman Catholics in particular; are under an all-out assault. The fundamental principles in every aspect of our freedom are on the line. The principles which are the foundations upon which we stand, are all in jeopardy. Our positions on contraceptives, marriage, natural order, abortion, and life itself; are all under attack 24/7/365. These things are who we are and they, each and every one of them, are at risk of fading away. Pray, yes I Pray for the Nation, and I do it as often as I can. If you are interested in joining me and a number of our fellow Parishioners. We pray for these concerns and many others and we do this together at the Mass for the Nation. We are hoping that you would consider joining us. In the mean time, You Pray for me, I'll Pray for You and together we can Pray for the World. Hope to see you at Mass.” Frank Ricketts, a fellow parishioner. DO YOU NEED A BREAK?
