Lent (18 February – 4 April), no flowers
The Revd Lynn Grove writes
Dear friends,
First, thank you for all the Christmas cards and good wishes, and
especially for the lovely cyclamen plant. It’s blooming well on my
windowsill. Second, a very Happy New Year to everyone!
I’m writing this at a time when I like to look back at the past year and
forward to the next. 2014 was a good year for our churches. We had
three lovely weddings, many baptisms, two of which were occasions
when a parent and child were baptised together – very special. Then we
had our Confirmation, a notable occasion in the life of our church.
Christmas was marked by a congregation of over 100 at the Crib/Carol
Service at Hawnby on Christmas Eve, and the Carols in The Inn at
Hawnby were a great success. Lovely food too! All our Christmas
services were well attended, but this was really special! Looking
forward, we have weddings and baptisms to come in 2015 and maybe a
Confirmation too. I’ve had one enquiry – if you’re interested for
yourself or a family member, do please give me a ring. Other things are
also in the pipeline, some at the ‘idea’ stage, others well on. There will
be a Deanery Family Afternoon on Sunday, June 7th. Ryedale
School’s Big band is booked and all sorts of fun activities. We’re also
working on ideas for a possible children’s day in the Parish, probably at
Hawnby, around Easter –details next month.
It seems strange that by the time you read this Lent will be approaching
and that Easter will be here and yes, there are Easter eggs in the shops
already! The details of our Lent course are below – do try to come!
We’re planning a ‘different’ service for Maundy Thursday, in the
form of a Seder meal! Look at next month’s Parish News for details,
but it will be fun and suitable for children, although there is a serious
purpose behind it. Then there’s Mothering Sunday, and – ‘Stop
Press’, this – we’re planning an Easter Fun-Day for children and
families on Tuesday March 31st at 2-4 pm in Hawnby Village Hall.
It’s amazing how God is working within these communities of ours.
There is an energy around, and new people seem to be coming forward
with ideas and offers of help. Many thanks to all of you – and if anyone
has ideas as to what the church should or could be doing, please tell me
or a church warden. We really want to know! But I see God working
not only in the happy times but above all in the sad times that are a part
of life. We have had funerals that have torn at the heart strings in the
past year, and yet the presence of God was there to help and sustain all
of us. I have become so aware that responding to what God is doing is
infinitely more effective than trying to do things on our own and
worrying about them. That means taking more time to pray, to draw
close to God and listen to what he’s saying. So my New Year
resolution is to do just that – spend more time praying and less time
worrying! But there is lots to do – balance will be important. Helpful
suggestions welcome!
With love,
Lynn

Carols in the Inn at Hawnby & Diary Draw
The carol singing in the Inn at Hawnby was well supported and much enjoyed
by everyone, about 30 people sitting down for supper after. The diary draw
made £221.20 for the parish and was won by Elaine Garbutt. Congratulations,
Elaine.

It is with sadness we record the death of Ruth Dickson. She lived at Scawton
Moor House for many years with her late husband Matt. She will be sadly
