DEEP CREEK CEMETERY
BROADWATER COUNTY
TOWNSEND, MONTANA
SEPTEMBER 2008
This cemetery is located about three and one half miles southeast of Townsend, Montana, Township 6 North, Range 2 East, Section 15, Lat.
N46°16’55”, Lon.W111°27’52”. Traveling south from Townsend on Highway 287, turn left onto Lower Deep Creek Road for about one and a
half mile, turn right and travel on the Litening Lane, take the Deep Creek Cemetery Road to the left. The cemetery consists of marked sections and
there is a small shed on the cemetery proper where a listing of burials and maps are available to locate the graves. Schauber Surveying of
Townsend, Montana surveyed the cemetery and prepared the listing and maps. Many funeral markers have been set flush on the surface. The grass
has grown over so some markers are not visible. The plot numbers were taken from an old listing.
“Townsend is a county seat advantageously “surrounded by the grandeur of the great Missouri River and its valley” and under the protection of
the Big Belt Mountains. The first passenger train to travel from St. Paul to Portland (September 1883) stopped at Townsend. The town had been
laid out and developed in anticipation of the coming of the railroad, and it was named by railroad officials, reportedly in honor of the wife of
Charles B. Wright, president of the Northern Pacific 1874-79 – her maiden name was Townsend. The post office opened in May 1883 with
William Woods, a watchmaker, the postmaster. A $10 thousand hotel, the Townsend House, was built. Town lots sold for $5 apiece and pioneer
families built fine houses, giving the new town a dignity that has maintained throughout the years. W.E. Tierney opened a merchandise center on
the ground floor of a big building. The upstairs served as a hall for church, theater, school programs, dances and suppers. Agriculture gradually
replaced the railroad as the dominant economic factor. The early post office moved back and forth across the street as postmasters changed and
took the office to their places of Business (Grace Holloway in Broadwater Bygones).” Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Names on the Face of Montana,
The Story of Montana's Place Names, Mountain Press Publishing Company, Missoula, 1983.
According to the records at the Broadwater County Museum, on September 1, 1917, Jacob Titman, D.J. and Anna Van Buskirk and Eleanor Van
Buskirk deeded ground to Deep Creek cemetery. September 2, 1917 was the filing of the articles of incorporation. On May 2, 1918, D.P. and
Suella Cauffman deeded more ground to Deep Creek cemetery. Alex Carson and H.P. Brandes deeded more ground to the cemetery on October
15, 1918. William and Mary Prosser deeded ground east of the original and the Titman addition on June 11, 1958. Mark Shelley built the
“Missouri Valley Flour Mill” on his ranch and what is now called the Vennekolt ranch. He died in 1889 and is buried here.
The first burial is mentioned in the Broadwater Bygones on page 84. James Jackson Keaton died in 1880 and supposedly was the first to be buried
in this cemetery. His tombstone is in Section A. There are children and adults that were buried elsewhere and were moved into this cemetery.

Helena Independent, 12/10/1880, page 3: Death of James J. Keaton.
We are pained to learn that Mr. James J. Keaton, residing near
Centreville, in Meagher county, died on Tuesday last after a short
illness. Mr. Keaton has resided near Centreville for many years, and
was loved and respected as a man of upright character and devoted
Christian principles. He was a member of the M.E. church, South, and
took an active interest in every good work. His bereaved family have
the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends in their great sorrow.

Helena Independent, 1/11/1877, page 3: DIED. At Deep Creek,
Meagher County, January 7, 1877, Arthur, son of R.M. Provence, aged
3 years.
Daily Independent, 1/12/1877, page 3: Obituary. Died, on the 7th inst.,
at the residence of his grandfather, Thompson Kemper, near
Centreville, Meagher county, Montana, Arthur N. Provence, aged 2
years, 6 months, and 21 days. His malady was scarlet fever in its worst
form, and the little one lingered through six days of most intolerable
suffering. He is the last of a family; his mother died two years ago, and
his father, R.M. Provence, having been murdered by Indians last
August in the Black Hills. His little spirit took its flight to join his
parents in a better land, leaving dear friends to mourn his untimely
departure.

R. M. PROVINCE
Rocky Mountain Husbandman, Sept. 28, 1872. We copy the
following particulars of the death of R. M. Province from the
Helena Herald: Thos. B. Persell, of Prickly Pear valley,
41
writing to his wife from Deadwood City, under date of
September 3d, gives the following particulars of R. M.
Province, of Centerville, by the Indians;
“It is my painful duty to chronicle the death of Milton
Province, whom you well knew. He was killed by the Indians
of the 30th of August, near Crook City. He was working for
the Logan boys, hauling hay, and was shot while on top of a
load of hay. Four redskins fired at him, and three balls struck
him, killing him instantly. Two men with their teams were a
few rods to the rear, and they barely escaped with their lives,
losing all their stock. Logan had warned his men to keep a
sharp lookout for the Indians, and to quit when they thought it
was getting too warm. On the fatal day, Province told his
companions that he was not afraid of the Indians, and he
would drive ahead; that he was prepared to die and therefore
had no fear. We gave him as good a burial as the country
would permit.”
Mr. Province was a prosperous farmer of Deep creek,
Missouri valley, and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of
friends, to whom this is sad intelligence. Upright in all his
dealings with his fellow men, with a keen sense of honor, a
pure, Christian gentleman, his death will be deeply deplored
by many friends.

Helena Independent, 9/15/1882, page 3: Death of Hon. James T.
Thorpe. Hon. James T. Thorpe died at his residence in Meagher county
in the afternoon of Wednesday, the 13th inst. Mr. Thorpe was formerly
a resident of this county, where he made a large number of friends. For
several years past he has resided in Meagher and represented that
county in the Legislative Assembly. He was a successful farmer and a
man of more than ordinary intellectual attainments. For some time past
he has been failing health and with the view of trying a change of
climate had recently disposed of his interests in Montana intending to
remove this fall to New Mexico. Mr. Thorpe was born in Andrew
county, Missouri, from which State he immigrated to Montana in 1864.
He leaves a wife, who is a daughter of Mr. Patrick Woods, of
Highwood, and several small children, who in their affliction have the
sincere sympathy not only of their own, but also of this community.

near Centerville, in Meagher county, M.T., September 13, 1882, James
Thomas Thorpe, aged 42 years.
Helena Independent, 12/19/1882, page 3: Memorial. James Thomas
Thorpe was born June 28, 1842, and was reared in Andrew county,
Missouri. He received his education in the common district schools of
his day, principally under the instruction of Prof. V.P. Kelly, now of
Clinton county, Missouri. His early life was spent with his father in the
quiet pursuits of a farmer. He served two years in the confederate army
under the command of Gen. Sterling Price, and was a prisoner of war
nine months at Fort Delaware and Point Lookout. He was married
April 21, 1864, to Laura L. Woods, and emigrated to Montana in May
1864, arriving at Virginia City the 15th of September of the same year.
He united with the Christian church in Helena in August, 1868, and

was immersed by the Rev. Thomas Campbell. He settled in the Prickly
Pear valley in September, 1866, and removed thence to the Missouri
valley in March, 1876, where he has since resided. He was elected
representative to the lower house of the Legislature of Montana,
November, 1878. In December, 1880, he returned to Missouri after an
absence of seventeen years from the parental roof. During this visit to
his parents he closed the eyes of his mother in death. In consequence of
ill health he designed to remove to Missouri in the spring of 1883.
Death met him before his wishes were consummated, and he departed
this life in the 41st year of his age, Sept. 13, 1882, leaving a wife and
three children. His illness was of long duration, but his Christian
fortitude never failed him, and he was reconciled to death, not
doubting the promise of “the sweet by and by.” The only burden of his
mind was leaving his young family when it most needed his fatherly
care. He sleeps with two little ones in the Deep Creek burying ground,
and his dying request that his family should return and settle in
Missouri will be fulfilled. The following resolutions were passed by
the Deep Creek Literary Society on convening for the winter of 188283:
Whereas, our dear brother, Mr. J.T. Thorpe, has been removed
from our midst by death, and,
Whereas, he was for several terms a most worthy and efficient
President of this society. Be it therefore
Resolved, That as a society and as individuals we deplore the
calamity that has taken from us one of our most faithful workers and
ardent friends of the cause of social improvement;
That we regard his life as worth of imitation, and his removal
as a transplanting from a troubled to a peaceful shore;
That we tender to his bereaved relatives our affectionate
sympathy in their deep sorrow:
That we inscribe the names of James Thomas Thorpe and
Mary Shelley Fricks on our “Roll of Honor.”
That a copy of these resolutions be sent for publication to the
Helena papers and Rocky Mountain Husbandman.

The Townsend Star, September 14, 1907:
Obituary.
On Wednesday morning, Sept. 11th, the town was startled and shocked because of the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Wm. [Myra}
Townsend. While it was known to her family and physician that she had heart trouble, speedy relief from the vicissitudes of this life were not
under contemplation at all. It seems she went to the wood pile to get an armful of wood and without showing any signs of distress or pain, fell
dead. Mrs. Fowell, who was at home, was the first to notice her, and running to her relief, was rewarded with but one sign of life – a long last gasp
for breath. She was carried to the house and Dr. Gilham sent for, but long before he reached the home she was dead. Myrtle Douthitt was born
January 12, 1862, in Ritchey, Mo: She was married to Wm. Townsend at Neosho, Mo., April 21, 1883. Five children came to bless the union of
Mr. and Mrs. Townsend, three boys and two girls. Two of the sons were buried in Colorado and three children survive her, namely Mrs. Fowell of
Harlowton, Miss Nellie Townsend, and Burt Townsend. The funeral obsequies took place at the home and the M. E. church, Rev. J. M. Faith
officiating. The service was a very impressive one, an appropriate sermon and excellent singing, and the church was beautifully decorated with
flowers. The burial took place at the Centerville cemetery. Mrs. Townsend was a pleasant, affable and generous woman. During her residence
in Townsend, she gained the friendship of all who knew her and her death is a hard blow to many friends as well as to the family. The sympathy of
the entire community goes out to Mr. Townsend and his family in their sad bereavement.

Born at Meeme, Wis., September 14, 1855, the son of Thomas F. Goodman, Judge Goodman attended the public schools of Chicago, where his
mother had moved in 1862. In 1870 he and his mother moved to a farm near Watseka, Ill. He worked on the farm until 1879, when he began a
scientific course at the Northern Indiana Normal school at Valparaiso, from which he was graduated in 1881 with a degree of bachelor of science.
In 1883 Judge Goodman was awarded the degree of doctor of laws from that institution. That same year he was admitted to practice in Indiana and
a year later moved to Emporia, Kan., where he remained a year.
Judge Goodman's active career in Montana began in June of 1885, when he moved to Townsend. He was a pioneer of Townsend, teaching in its
first school and remaining as its principal until 1888, when he entered law practice, later to become one of the most eminent attorneys for this
section of the state.
WAS LEGISLATOR: Judge Goodman was elected county attorney of Broadwater county on the democratic ticket, serving from 1897 until 1902.
From 1889 until 1891 he represented his county in the state legislature, serving in the first and second sessions. He was a member of the judiciary
committee in both sessions and was chairman of the code commission in the second session. In 1919 Gov. S.V. Stewart appointed him judge of
the district court, comprising Broadwater, Meagher and Wheatland counties.
In 1921 Judge Goodman retired from the bench and was elected state representative, serving two terms. In 1926 he was elected state senator and
since 1928 has been engaged in the practice of law here. He first became prominent as organized of the Montana Ditch company, an important
factor in the development of Broadwater county. He served as secretary of the company from its organization in 1893 until 1900.
In June, 1889, Judge Goodman was married in Wyoming to Miss Eva Allen. They were parents of one daughter, Mary Z. Mrs. Goodman died in
1928 and in 1930 he was married to Margaret Evans.
LODGE AFFILIATION
Judge Goodman was a devout member of the Episcopal church. He took an active interest in lodge activity being most prominently affiliated with
North Star lodge No. 19 of the Odd Fellows, of Townsend, of which he was a past grand master, and served six terms as grand representative in
the Sovereign Grand Lodge of the World. He was also a member of the auxilliary lodge of the Odd Fellows, Orpha Rebekah lodge No. 36. A
member of the Woodmen of the World, Judge Goodman had served as counsel commander, being the first of the Townsend camp. He was officer
of the Head camp, comprising nine western states and was a member of the legislative committee for several years.
December 28, 1936, Judge Goodman fell on an icy pavement and for many months suffered from a broken hip. During the past year, however, he
had been active in the practice of law and in overseeing the numerous interests in this county, which include several pieces of business property
61
and a prosperous ranch of 480 acres, which he acquired many years ago.
Besides his widow and daughter, Judge Goodman is survived by a half sister, Mrs. Mary Myers, who resides with the Goodman family, and a half
brother, William Nye, of Charlotte, Wis.

John E. Ireland, a former resident of Townsend, died Thursday morning at St. Peter's hospital, Helena. The body was brought here (Townsend)
last night and will be buried today in the Deep creek cemetary (sic).
Townsend Messenger 7/21/1893:
A Desolate Home.
A few days more than two months ago James E. Ireland and Miss Dissie Budd were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. Her health was so
poor that she was carried into her husbands home and never left it until after death claimed her. She was young and refined and made friends of
all. Although a stranger in this community she received every attention that loving hands could bestow, who with sister and noble husband
ministered to her every want. Her last earthly resting place is Deep Creek Cemetery, where she was tenderly laid last Sabbath, Rev. E. L. Lee
officiating.
