Spring 2013 For friends of The Oklahoma Caring Foundation, Inc. oklahomacaringfoundation.org Magic Johnson contributes to record fundraising at Champions of Health Gala More than 500 people attended the ninth annual Champions of Health Gala, which was held Oct. 8th at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. A record $204,000 was raised through event sponsorships, auctions and ticket purchases to support the Oklahoma Caring Foundation. The gala is designed to recognize individuals and organizations that are working to improve health in Oklahoma. It also serves as the Foundation’s premier annual fundraiser. With one in five births being Latino, LCDA is critical to service delivery to a large population of families in central Oklahoma, including underserved children eligible to receive immunizations aboard a Caring Van. The partnership between LCDA and the Oklahoma City Caring Van program began in July 2001, in the heart of Oklahoma City’s predominantly Latino neighborhood. Through community outreach and announcements on local Spanish radio stations, families have been able to count on the Caring Van being in their neighborhood the same time each month. More than 2,500 children have received a total of nearly 6,500 immunizations through the Caring Van’s partnership with LCDA. 1 New Caring Van hit the road in southeast Oklahoma Oklahoma’s fifth Caring Van began serving communities in southeastern Oklahoma in April with a kickoff in the Talihina community. Operating in partnership with Choctaw Nation Health Services, the van traveled across seven counties providing immunizations and additional preventive health services. After many years of providing Caring Van services in rural communities, the Choctaw Nation van represents a new model in which a partnering organization can operate the van each day of the week, without relying on Foundation staff to drive from Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This arrangement has worked very well, with 46 clinics conducted in the fall of 2012 alone. “Because we work in such a rural area, the schools and parents appreciate the convenience of having this service provided,” said Kelly Adams, lead Choctaw Nation Caring Van nurse. “We like knowing that the risk of a child acquiring a vaccine preventable disease lessens with every immunization administered.” The Choctaw Nation Caring Van primarily serves schools, and the success of the new van is evident, with more than 1,700 children receiving immunizations in a four month period. Other services were provided to an additional 1,750 individuals including adult immunizations and head lice checks for children. Plans are underway to engage additional schools and Head Start locations to coordinate a preventive dental health component in 2013. Caring Van milestones celebrated in 2012 The Caring Vans produced record results in 2012, immunizing nearly 16,000 children with more than 25,000 vaccines at 729 clinics statewide. The addition of a fifth Caring Van increased the programs geographic reach and helped improve partnerships in communities historically served by the vans. On Aug. 27, Oklahoma Caring Foundation staff joined partners and funders to celebrate the 100,000th child immunized aboard a Caring Van. The celebration took place at Emergency Infant Services in Tulsa, an organization filling the needs of the most vulnerable young children in the community, which is also a service partner of the Caring Van program. “Our program targets children in low-income and underserved areas, so it’s especially exciting to know that these 100,000 children represent kids who may not have otherwise received immunizations,” said Ted Haynes, Board Chairman of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation. Caring Foundation and the SPRING 2013 3 Caring Vans protect children against influenza Influenza made national news in 2012 with early outbreaks across the country. With heightened awareness around flu prevention, the Oklahoma Caring Vans conducted a large statewide campaign, and provided flu vaccinations at more than 200 clinics across Oklahoma during the fall and winter of 2012. Our Caring Van coordinators focused their efforts primarily on serving schools, where children are most likely to be infected with influenza. Studies show that vaccinations are imperative for children’s health and readiness to learn, as it helps decrease school absences. High rates of flu and flu-like illness even led some Oklahoma schools to close their doors to protect children from the spread of the disease. During the 2012 campaign, the Caring Vans provided more than 7,000 children with flu vaccinations, which were administered for children ages 6 months to 18 years at schools, child care centers, and community agencies. The Caring Van program plans to continue playing an active role in flu vaccine administration in 2013 by actively working with the Oklahoma State Department of Health to coordinate outreach. Donor Opportunities As the Oklahoma Caring Foundation continues to grow, our donors have more opportunities to support our mission. In 2012, the Foundation established a charitable endowment fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation (OCCF). The fund will provide an avenue for long-term investment in the health and well-being of future generations of Oklahoma children, and ensure that the foundation is always a strong advocate for preventive health. Donors may also access OCCF’s expert staff to assist with personal charitable and financial planning goals. Our Tribute Gift program allows supporters to honor the lives of loved ones while creating a healthier future for Oklahoma children. Tribute Gifts are ideal for celebrating special occasions such as birthdays and holidays, as well as remembering the lives of individuals who have passed away. Foundation welcomes new Caring Van specialists In February, Leslie Knight joined the Oklahoma City team as a Caring Van specialist. Leslie works aboard the vans, coordinating immunization clinics. She recently took the lead in implementing the new BMI screening project aboard her van. Leslie brings several years of experience working with underserved populations through her work at the Department of Human Services and the University of Oklahoma, where she specialized in coordinating services for children in foster care. In December, Jamie Kucinski began work as a Caring Van specialist in the Tulsa office. 4 Jamie most recently worked in customer service at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma and brings many years of team building and project leadership experience to the Caring Van program. He is a dedicated community volunteer and was recognized as the company’s Volunteer of the Year for his work with youth through programs like CASA, Team USA Self Defense and YMCA. THE CARING CONNECTION Partner Spotlight: Laura Dester Shelter Providing services at locations where children spend their days has always been part of the Caring Van operations. That method took on new meaning in September 2011, when an observant Caring Van specialist noticed a woman bringing different groups of children to the health department each week for immunizations. The specialist discovered the woman was a registered nurse at the local Department of Human Services children’s shelter; All of the children were in 2013 Donor Spotlight The Oklahoma Caring Foundation’s work would not be possible without the help of businesses, philanthropic foundations, civic organizations and individuals whose contributions keep our Caring Vans running. On behalf of the children and families we serve, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who participate in our mission with their financial support. We would like to take this opportunity to spotlight two of our longstanding donors, Bank of Oklahoma (BOk) and the Inasmuch Foundation. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the partnership between BOk and the Foundation. In 2003, BOk provided the opportunity to add a new Caring Van that would serve the Tulsa metro area and rural communities across emergency custody after having been removed from their homes. Soon thereafter, the Tulsa Caring Van began services directly to the Laura Dester Shelter twice each month. Though immunizations are required for child care and school entry, the children are often from homes without the most basic needs. Providing services in an environment that is familiar to these fragile children proves to be a very positive arrangement for shelter staff. To date, more than 300 children have received a total of 830 immunizations through the Caring Van and Laura Dester Shelter. eastern Oklahoma. Ten years later, the BOk van is still on the road and has welcomed more than 28,000 children who have received close to a total of 50,000 vaccines. BOk continues to provide generous support for the Oklahoma Caring Van program. To date, BOk has invested more than $129,000 in improving the health of Oklahoma children. The Inasmuch Foundation has been a part of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation’s effort to improve access to preventive health services since 1996. They have contributed nearly $70,000 to support the belief that every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy. The Inasmuch Foundation of Oklahoma City, is part of the legacy of Edith Kinney Gaylord.
