AVC 2015 set to engage
and enthrall - last
chance to register!
Optometrists from across the country will be
arriving on the glorious Gold Coast in just over
one weeks time for AVC 2015! With AVCs 10
to 12 April clinical program being its best yet,
it comes as no surprise that registrations are
still coming in.
This program will prove to be an unmissable
opportunity for optometrists to gain their
annual CPD requirement, with topics to suit all
practice types, from a high calibre presenter
line up.
Topic
highlights
of
this much anticipated
program include ocular
oncology with renowned
ophthalmologist Dr Sunil
Warrier. Delegates will be
given tools to accurately
assess patients with
suspicious conjunctival, choroidal and retinal
lesions. Dr Warrier will outline what current
treatment options are available for these
lesions, giving delegates an overall update on
ocular oncology.
Melbourne paediatric optometrist Nelofar
Deen will give delegates an understanding
of common ‘red flags’ in the paediatric
population.
This will include differential
diagnosis for common eye conditions and
further insight into the optometric tests used to
rule out these ‘red flags’.
Professor Brien Holden
OAM will be joining
delegates on Saturday
11 April with his one
hour presentation on the
challenges of myopia.
This lecture is one not to
miss and will describe the
variations in the normal pattern of peripheral
refractive errors and the relative role of
peripheral vision in refractive development.
He will outline strategies optometrists can
utilise in the management of their patients
with myopia, identifying the behavioural and
lifestyle changes that can be incorporated
alongside optical and therapeutic care.

give attendees a better understanding as to
how silicone hydrogel contact lenses can be
best utilised in practice. They will also leave
this lecture being able to describe how silicone
hydrogel lenses can assist in the contact
lens management of a wide variety of ocular
conditions including high refractive error,
astigmatism, keratoconus and post-surgical
corneae.

Hub meeting set for 28
April
The Member Hub meetings are off and
running, with Townsville having held theirs
in early March.
Darling Downs members will have the
opportunity to join their local Member Hub
meeting (previously branch meeting) on
Tuesday 28 April 2015. This meeting will
prove to be a great avenue for members
to discuss local issues and have their
say. All members within this region will be
contacted shortly with an official invitation.

“I want to start working immediately to provide
for the people that need refraction services
and refer those with other eye problems,” said
Sahondranirina. “We plan to conduct a number
of outreach programs and establish a centre for
refractive services in Madagascar. We also want
to work with the Ministry of Health in order to
garner enough attention for the project.”
“I am hoping that many more people will choose
to study optometry and over the next few years
we can start making a marked difference,” said
Raveloson.
“The biggest problem we have at the moment
is that there are just two of us.”
