19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus' disciples must have felt intense fear on
the lake as their boat was tossed around in the
dark. Thick clouds would have covered any moon
and no lights from the shore would have been visible since tiny oil lamps would not penetrate the
darkness that far out. In that storm, Jesus comes to
calm the waves and give hope to his disciples. He is
also the One who comes to us in the great storms
of our own lives. When we are tossed about by the
problems, fears, difficulties, and tragedies of life, Jesus is there to give us hope. Like the passing thunder-storm, we still have to deal with the effects of
life's problems. They don't magically go away. But
Christ is there to see us through, even as we recover from whatever storm battered our life.

Saverio “Sonny” Lucente, 77. He was a U. S.
Army veteran and member of San Angelo Club. Son of
+Michael and +Virginia “Dolly” (nee Vassalla); brother of
Jerry (Phyllis), Michael (Janet) and +Arlene; uncle of
Christine (Tony), Jerry (Tracy), Michael (Nicole), Yvette
(Maurice), and 9 great-nieces and nephews. He was buried on Thursday, July 17, at St. Mary Garden Mausoleum, Evergreen Park, IL. May he rest in peace.

THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY
- VELIKA GOSPA - WILL BE CELEBRATED FOR THE 108TH
TIME ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 15. Welcome to all who are
returning year after year, as well as those who are coming for the first time.
• WE NEED VOLUNTEERS.
Consider helping our parish family
in various ways: setting up, cleaning, helping at the booths, helping
at the bar or kitchen, selling tickets, miscellaneous tasks.
• The winner of last Sunday Velika Gospa Raffle drawing
was Marinko Luburiü. Congratulations! The main drawing will be on
August 15, at 10 p.m. You can
win: $20,000 grand prize, $5,000
second prize and three more $1,000 prizes. If you need
more tickets, they are available at the Parish Office. Proceeds from this Feast helps our Parish and our School.
Thank you for your participation and generous support!
• Today, August 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. there will
be Rižot dinner, homemade bread, coffee and cake as
well as T-shirts sponsored by Zumba and Book Club.
• Our spiritual preparation (Novena) for the feast
of Our Lady continues this evening. Rosary starts at 6:30
p.m. and Mass at 7 p.m. Ther will be a priest available
for the sacrament of reconciliation (confession) from 6
p.m. and on. Come, bring your friends, your family and
your intention for the Novena.
• FLOWERS. If you wish to donate flowers in
memory of a loved one, please, see Louis and Mary
Scalise, Ken and Jan Zekich, or Ivan and Vesna Jureta.
• FOOD ORDERS. If you wish to order a whole
lamb or half a lamb, please, call our Parish Office. Order
forms for other foods are in the lobby of the church.
• VISITING THE SICK. We would like to visit sick
and homebound parishioners on Monday, August 11.
Please, call the Parish Office to make arrangements.
• Annual Velika Gospa Bake Sale will be on Wednesday, August 13. Baked goods include Povitica, Burek and Strudel. There will be coffee and other goods.
• Please, join us in the School Hall on Thursday,
August 14, at 10 a.m., for preparation and cutting of
vegetables that will be used for Velika Gospa lunch.

Great Procession will begin at 10:15 a.m. in front of the
church. Please, bring your family and friends. Following
the Procession, the Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Tomislav Dukiü, OFM - a former pastor of Sinj, Croatia.

11TH VELIKA GOSPA
GOLF TOURNAMENT
On Sunday, August 17, we
will have a Velika Gospa Golf Tournament for the 11th time. It will be
held at The Links at Carillon, Plainfield, IL. 18 holes shotgun style will
be played. Dinner will be served
with a special program. All are welcome. The proceeds
will go to the victims of recent flood in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially to the families with little

PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY HILL, WI
Our Annual prilgrimage to the National Shrine of
Mary Help of Christians in Holy Hill, WI will be on Saturday, August 23. There will be a

Tickets for St. Jerome School’s Annual Football
Mania Raffle are on sale. Each $20 ticket has 11 chances
to win a share of $925 in weekly prize money for each of

U nedjelju 17. kolovoza održava se dobrotvorni
golfski turnik. Sav prihod üe iüi za pomoü stradalima u
nedavnoj poplavi u Hrvatskoj i BiH. Turnir üe se održati
na The Links at Carillon u Plainfieldu, IL. Nakon igre bit
üe veþera i prigodni program. Dobro nam došli.

108 godina þastimo kao ýudotvornu Gospu Sinjsku. Srdaþna DOBRODOŠLICA svima koji se i ove godine utjeþu
zagovoru Blažene Djevice Marije, a osobito onima koji üe
nam se pridružiti ovoj proslavi po prvi put!
• RAýUNAMO NA VAŠU POMOû: Tijekom godina
ova župa je poznata po primjernom odazivu mnogih u
pripremi i uspješnoj proslavi. Mi, vaši sveüenici franjevci,
oþekujemo vašu podršku i ove godine. Unaprijed vam srdaþno zahvaljujemo na tome.
• BOGATA LUTRIJA: Dobitnik drugog ranog izvlaþenja je Marinko Luburiü. ýestitamo! Izvlaþenje ostalih nagrada üe biti u petak 15. kolovoza u 10 sati naveþer. Prva nagrada je $20,000, druga je $5,000, te još tri

üe pripremiti Zumba i Book Club. Takoÿer üe se moüi nabaviti i prigodne majice.
• DEVETNICU nastavljamo danas s molitvom
krunice u 6:30 te sa sv. Misom u 7 sati naveþer. Prilika
za sv. ispovijed üe biti od 6 sati naveþer.
• CVIJEûE. Ako želite darovati za cvijeüe u spomen na svoje pokojne, javite se Louisu i Mary Scalise,
Kenu i Jan Zekich, ili Ivanu i Vesni Jureta.
• NARUDŽBA HRANE. Ako želite naruþiti pola ili

Godišnje hrvatsko hodoþašüe u svetište Gospe
od Milosti na Holy Hill, WI üe biti u subotu 23. kolovoza.
Sv. misa üe biti u 11 sati prije podne a Put križa te blagoslov u 2:30 poslije podne. Prijavite se u Župni ured
ukoliko planirate iüi s nama autobusom.
PIKNIK HRVATSKE ŠKOLE
Piknik Hrvatske škole üe biti u subotu 30. kolovoza kod franjevaþkog samostana na Drexelu. Piknik üe poþeti u 10 sati prije podne. Bit üe prilike za upis u novu
školsku godinu. Takoÿer, djeca i odrasli üe moüi uživati u
nogometu, buüanju i drugim sportovima, u lijepoj prirodi
i ugodnome društvu. Ruþak üe biti u 1 sat poslije podne.
TREBAMO UýITELJE HRVATSKOG JEZIKA
Hrvatska škola traži nove uþitelje i uþiteljice hrvatskog jezika. Nastava hrvatskog jezika se održava subotom
od 8:30 sati ujutro do 12:15 sati poslije podne. Javite se
þlanovima odbora Hrvatske škole ili izravno fra Ivici.

LET US PRAY ROSARY
Every morning at 6:50 a.m. Rosary is prayed at
St. Jerome’s Church.
On Monday evenings Rosary is prayed at Giggie
Cortese’s house (3110 S. Wells St.) at 7:30 p.m.
On Wednesday evenings Rosary is prayed for
the souls in Purgatory in Gerard Fratto’s garden (2716 S.
Princeton Ave.) at 7 p.m. Also, on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
Rosary is prayed with Croatian Franciscan sisters at St.
Anthony’s chapel in Hyde Park (4848 S. Ellis Ave.).
CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE
Let’s get acquainted! Join us on Sunday, August
24, 2014 at 12:30 p.m., in the Upper Small Hall to learn
more about Catholic Financial Life and what CFL can do
for you. A brief presentation will take place in Croatian
and English. Catholic Financial Life can provide a wide
variety of member benefits and ways to help you keep
and earn more money. Refreshments will be served.
CHILDCARE/HOUSEKEEPING WANTED
A babysitter is wanted. A person with a reliable
vehicle who will take care of 11-year old girl. Babysitter
needs to do light housekeeping, prepare food and transport a girl to her lessons and activities. Hours generally:
Monday through Friday; from 3:20 p.m. (after school)

IS ASSUMPTION - VELIKA GOSPA
A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION?
In the United States and other countries, the
bishops have received permission from the Holy See
(Vatican) to abrogate (temporarily waive) the requirement for Catholics to attend Mass on certain Holy
Days of Obligation, when those Holy Days fall on either Saturday or Monday. Because of this, some Catholics have become confused about whether certain
feasts are, in fact, Holy Days of Obligation.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
(Velika Gospa) is one such Holy Day. However, when
it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation to
attend Mass is temporarily waived. For instance, the
Feast of the Assumption fell on Saturday in 2009 and
Monday in 2011; in both cases, Catholics in the United States were not required to attend Mass.
