Hrvatsko društvo željezničkih inženjera THE 6th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RAILWAYS Invitation to participants and information Organized by: Croatian Association of Railway Engineers in co-operation with the following partners: UEEIV, HŽ Infrastruktura d.o.o., HŽ Putnički prijevoz d.o.o. and the CroatianAustrian Chamber of Commerce Place: Zagreb/ Slavonski Brod Time: May 28 and 29, 2014 Framework subject: INVESTMENT IN RAILWAYS DEVELOPMENT AS SUPPORT FOR ECONOMIC PATRONAGE Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Croatia INTENDED PURPOSE OF THE SYMPOSIUM The Croatian Association of Railway Engineers, in co-operation with partners, is organizing the 6th international symposium on railways with the aim of taking stock of the current condition and perspectives of railway transport in Croatia and the surrounding region. Upon Croatia's accession to the EU, its railway infrastructure became an integral part of the EU railway network, which has major implications for the functioning of railway transport in Croatia. At the end of last year, the European Commission has adopted a new infrastructure policy, which served to establish a core transport network, i.e., nine transport corridors. The core network should be completed until 2030 by means swift investment, and significant alterations and improvements to the traffic links between the East and the West will be undertaken. Considering the fact that Croatia is located on that route, there are ongoing investment works on our rail network, and the same will have to be intensified and expanded to the entire region in order to accomplish set goals. Having in mind mentioned circumstances, as well as the current economic crisis, the Symposium will initiate a discussion on real consequences of a new European transport policy for Croatia and the region, as well as a possible impact that investment in railways could have on positive developments in the economy and faster emergence from the recession. Symposium conclusions and recommendations will be of good use to administrative bodies of the EU, the Republic of Croatia and neighbouring countries, CER and international financial institutions as guidelines for planning rail infrastructure investments.
