THE PASTOR’S LETTER
Summer 2010
Dear Parishioners:
Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες:
During the summer when we allocate
time to rejuvenate our bodies, please let us
not forget to regenerate our souls.
Reme mb er: “Everything in Due
Moderation,” putting the Church first and
foremost. “For what profit is it to a man if
he gains the whole world and loses his own
soul? Or what will a man give in exchange
for his soul? For the Son of Man will come
in the glory of His Father with His angels,
and then He will reward each according to
his works” (Matthew 16:26-27). Let us be a
fine, tuned instrument – in body, soul and
spirit – that magnifies God with love and
boldness. Since the Divine Liturgy is the
means by which Christ comes to us
concretely in the Eucharist for adoration and
nutrition, please let us attend the summer
worship services. St. Paul calls all of us to be
leaven (yeast). Just as leaven converts a
large quantity of meal into its own quality,
let us change our neighbor and locality to fit
God’s specifications. Let us accomplish this
through Communion with the Church where
the power of the Gospel is great. What is
once leavened becomes leaven in turn for
others. God bless all of you with a safe,
fruitful and blessed summer.
Paternally,

Religious Education News
Dear Parishioners,
Saturday, May 15, although windy at the start, was the perfect day for a picnic, a Sunday
school picnic at Brandywine Creek State Park. Kites were flying, children were running every
which way playing ball games and follow the leader. I even noticed a group of fathers playing
soccer with their children. Many thanks to Georgia and Demetrios Halakos, and Maria and
Chris Kotanidis for organizing the picnic, to Eirini & Nicholas Staikos for organizing the
sports activities, to Steve Nicholas for the basil seed planting project, and to ALL the parents
who either made a monetary contribution to the Sunday school, spent time at the grill cooking
hamburgers and hot dogs or who brought desserts, drinks and a whole lot of “kefi.” You all
made it happen.
The following day, May 16 was Sunday school graduation for all the students. To the seniors
who have graduated and are off to college in the fall . . . congratulations and Godspeed.
Look for picnic and graduation pictures in the July issue of the monthly bulletin.
I am signing off for the summer, returning in September with a report for the monthly bulletin.
Have a good, safe summer.
Yours in Christ,
Helene Krikelis

PRESIDENTS COLUMN
Dear Parishioners,
Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,
It is difficult to believe that it is June already and all the
cold and snow are a distant memory. With June comes a
few big events in our community. First, congratulations to
all our community’s high school, Sunday School, Greek
School and college graduates. Please know that everyone
is proud of your accomplishment.
Also, by the time you receive this bulletin, we will be in
the middle of our Festival. We all know how important
the Festival is to our Church. Again, I want to thank
everyone who has been working behind the scenes since
January and who are volunteered during the Festival.
Brick sales for the Memorial Garden continue. More
information about the Memorial Garden and purchasing a
commemorative brick are in this bulletin. You can buy a
brick during coffee hour after Church services or by
contacting any Parish Council member.
Remember, Holy Trinity’s Third Annual Golf Outing will
be Monday, September 27 at Delaware National Country
club. We are looking for sponsors and golfers.
Finally, the Second Annual Fall Glendi will be held on
Friday and Saturday, October 1st and 2nd.
Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers in our community.
I hope you and your family have a safe and healthy
summer.
As always, please contact any Parish Council member or
me if we can be of any assistance. In addition to my
phone number listed in the front of the bulletin, please feel
free to email me at [email protected].
Thank you.
Spiros Mantzavinos

Stewardship
Stewardship is a matter of recognizing priorities. It’s not fundraising. Simply put, is your church
worth as much to you as is your monthly TV cable? Do you pay your cable provider more than
you offer your church each month? If so, then perhaps it is time to rethink priorities.
As we often have said, stewardship is the offering of time and talent, in addition to
treasure. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those parishioners who volunteered their
time cleaning the church in preparation for the Easter services and to those who
volunteered their talent beautifying the sanctuary and the Epitafio during Holy Week.
The choir members, chanters, altar boys, and the altar boys director offered their time
and talent also. As is the custom here at Holy Trinity, the GOYAns wrapped eggs and
conducted the Easter Egg hunt for children, following the Agape Services. For
everyone, it was a matter of recognizing priorities.
Soon, the summer season will be here. Many of you will be leaving
for well-earned vacations. Before you do so, however, please take
the time to consider, the work of the church goes on. Have you set
your priorities in order? Have you offered a pledge to your church
for the 2010 year? Have you, in whole or in part, fulfilled that
pledge by offering your time, talent, and treasure?
Are your priorities in order?

GOYA News
Holy Trinity Members,
I want to thank everyone for being so supportive and helpful during this past year, we would not have been able to
do it without you. Specifically I would like to thank our board members Alisa Raisis, Ria Karavasilis, Peter
Stevens, and Leah Vande Poele. They did a great job and we worked very well together. Next, I would like to
thank our advisors George Rassias, Virginia Karablacas, Louisa Tzidras, Peter Rassias, Dino Charalambides, Gale
Kostas, Leo Raisis, and all the parents that made this year successful and fun. Without these supportive advisors
and parents there to help us, GOYA would not have been the same so thank you, thank you, thank you. Last, I
would like to thank all of the GOYAns for making my senior year unforgettable. I will miss you next year and I
wish you the best of luck.
Last month was quite an exciting and eventful month for GOYA. We handed out Mother's Day flowers to all the
wonderful mothers of our church. We also had a lock-in our hall, which was very fun and a great event. Last, the
Raisis family opened their house up for our annual end of the year party where we voted for our executive board for
next year. Congratulations!
This month I hope to see all of the GOYAns at our annual Greek Festival June 1st through 4th. GOYA is once
again running the soda booth so we need all of the GOYAns to sign up for as many shifts as they can. Check your
email and respond with the day and shift you can work. I hope to see you all there.
Congratulations on a great year and good luck next year!!!!

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist
(Feast Day: June 24)
Reading:
He that was greater than all who are born of women, the Prophet who received God's testimony that he
surpassed all the Prophets, was born of the aged and barren Elizabeth (Luke 1: 7) and filled all his
kinsmen, and those that lived round about, with gladness and wonder. But even more wondrous was
that which followed on the eighth day when he was circumcised, that is, the day on which a male child
receives his name. Those present called him Zacharias, the name of his father. But the mother said,
"Not so, but he shall be called John." Since the child's father was unable to speak, he was asked, by
means of a sign, to indicate the child's name. He then asked for a tablet and wrote, "His name is John."
And immediately Zacharias' mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed from its silence of nine
months, and filled with the Holy Spirit, he blessed the God of Israel, Who had fulfilled the promises
made to their fathers, and had visited them that were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, and
had sent to them the light of salvation. Zacharias prophesied concerning the child also, saying that he
would be a Prophet of the Most High and Forerunner of Jesus Christ. And the child John, who was
filled with grace, grew and waxed strong in the Spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his
showing to Israel (Luke 1:57-80). His name is a variation of the Hebrew "Johanan," which means
"Yah is gracious."
Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone
O Prophet and Forerunner of the presence of Christ, we who fervently honor you cannot worthily praise you. For by your revered and
glorious birth the barrenness of your mother and the muteness of your father were unbound, and the incarnation of the Son of God is
proclaimed to the world.
Kontakion in the Third Tone
She that once was barren doth today bring forth Christ's Forerunner, John, the culmination and the crown of all the Prophets. For when
he, in River Jordan, laid his hand on Him Whom the Prophets preached aforetime, he was revealed as God the Word's fore-chosen
Prophet, His mighty preacher, and His Forerunner in grace.

Bartholomew and Barnabas the Holy Apostles (Feast Day: June 11)
Reading:
Saint Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles, and had Galilee as his homeland; this is all that
is known of him for certain according to the history of the Gospels. Concerning his apostolic work,
certain say that he preached in Arabia and Persia, and especially in India, bringing to them the
Gospel written by Saint Matthew, which had been written originally in Hebrew, and which was
found there one hundred years later by Pantaenus, formerly a stoic philosopher and later an
illustrious teacher of the Christian school in Alexandria (see Eusebius, Eccl. Hist., 5: 10). Other
accounts say that he went to Armenia. According to some, he ended his life by being crucified, or by
being flayed alive, in Albanopolis (Urbanopolis) of Armenia. This also confirms an ancient tradition
preserved by the Armenians. According to some, Bartholomew and Nathanael are the same person,
because the Evangelists who mention Bartholomew do not mention Nathanael; and John, who alone
mentions Nathanael as one of the Twelve, says nothing of Bartholomew. Indeed, Bartholomew is a
patronymic, "son of Talmai," which means "bold, spirited" (see also Jesus of Navi 15:14; II Kings 3:3), and Nathanael could have had
this as a surname. According to the Synaxarion of the Menaion on April 22, however, it is Simon the Zealot and Nathanael who are the same;
the Evangelists who mention Simon the Zealot (or "the Cananite") do not mention Nathanael.
Saint Barnabas, one of the Seventy, was from Cyprus, of the tribe of Levi, and a fellow disciple with Paul under Gamaliel. He was called Joses,
but was renamed Barnabas, which means "son of consolation," perhaps to distinguish him from the Joses called Barsabas and surnamed Justus
(Acts 1:23). Saint Barnabas had a field, which he sold and brought the money to the Apostles (Acts 4:36-37). Before the conversion of Saul to
Paul, it was Barnabas who was the leader of the Seventy Apostles, the first in preaching and chief spokesman. After Saul's vision on the road to
Damascus, it was Barnabas who joined him to the Apostles when the others, because of Saul's reputation as a persecutor of the Church, still
feared him (Acts 9:26-27); again it was Saint Barnabas who conscripted Paul as a preacher, bringing him from Tarsus to Antioch after the
stoning of Stephen, to assist in spreading the Gospel (Acts 11:25-26). Saint Barnabas preached the Gospel in many places, traveled together with
Paul, and finally was stoned to death by the Jews in his native Cyprus. During the reign of Zeno, in the year 478, his sacred relics were found,
having on his chest the Gospel according to Matthew written in Greek by Barnabas' own hand. This Gospel was brought to Zeno. Because of
this the Church of Cyprus received the right of autonomy, and its archbishop was given the privilege, like the emperor, of signing his decrees
and encyclicals in vermilion.
Apolytikion in the Third Tone
O Holy Apostles, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.
Kontakion in the Fourth Tone
To the Church thou hast appeared as a great daystar; with thy teachings as thy rays and beams of awesome miracles, thou hast enlightened those
praising thee, the Lord's Apostle, O sacred Bartholomew.
To thy Lord, O Barnabas, thou wast a genuine servant; and among the Seventy Apostles, thou wast the foremost; and with Paul, thou shonest
brightly in thy wise preaching, making known unto all men Christ Jesus, the Saviour. For this cause, we celebrate thy divine memorial with
hymns and spiritual songs.

The Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles
(Feast Day: June 30)
Reading:
The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother
Andrew, the First-called; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who was also the
Evangelist and Theologian; Philip, and Bartholomew (see also June 11); Thomas, and Matthew
the publican, who was also called Levi and was an Evangelist; James the son of Alphaeus, and
Jude (also called Lebbaeus, and surnamed Thaddaeus), the brother of James, the Brother of
God; Simon the Cananite ("the Zealot"), and Matthias, who was elected to fill the place of
Judas the traitor (see Aug. 9).
Apolytikion in the Third Tone
O Holy Apostles, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of
sins.
Kontakion in the Second Tone
O Lord, receive the steadfast and divinely voiced preachers, the pinnacle of Your disciples,
unto their rest and the enjoyment of Your blessings. You received, above every offering, their
labors and their life. You alone know what the heart holds.

Holy Trinity Food Pantry
US POSTAL SERVICE ANNUAL LOCAL FOOD DRIVE
On Saturday, May 8, the National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Services,
held their annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive with all food collected going to local food banks and
pantries. Interesting – that the US Postal Service gets involved at all in any public endeavor at a local level.
But this annual program of the US Postal Service – Stamp Out Hunger – brings into focus the very critical
shortage of food that food banks are facing all across our land. Because of the current world-wide economic
crisis, even local, small food banks and pantries are feeling the pinch.
But we parishioners at Holy Trinity are doing our Christian duty by filling our food bins month after month.
In May, Tina Ganiaris King delivered 10 bags of food to the Claymont Community Center and Steve Nicholas made a delivery of
several bags to the St. Stephen’s Church Food Pantry.
Please continue to respond to the needs of the underprivileged in Wilmington. Sharing your many blessings is such an easy way to
get involved in a program that is on-going.
Please continue to bring in all non-perishable food items such as:
Fruit, fish, pastas, cereals, baby food & formula, peanut butter, jelly, sugar, flour, rice, gravy, jello...
any food that will not spoil.
Think of that needy family when you go food shopping and buy that extra box of cereal, that extra can of soup, some canned goods
that will help the needs of those who have not, someone who perhaps has children – children who miss meals – simply because they
do not have enough to go around.
Our food bins are located in the Church Narthex and by the Church Office for your convenience.
Thank you, Nikkie, Tina, John & Steve
May 12th marked our 27th year of service to the
Emmanuel Dining Room East
We thank our sponsors, Evie and Emmanuel Fournaris, who hosted and worked the kitchen serving 160
warm meals on Wednesday, May 12th, as we marked our 27th year of service to this dining room and this
very worthy cause. Thank you Evie and Manny for your generosity! Through their commitment and that of
many others, we continue to do good work providing the food and serving the luncheon meal for the most
needy in our city on the 12th of every month.
On Saturday June, 12th, Mrs. Anthi Manukas will sponsor the meal in loving memory of both her husband,
George, and her brother-in-law, Renos Tsakataras. If you would like to help out on that day or if you would like to
sponsor a month and become a part of this worthy cause with your family, friends or church organization, please
contact Nikkie Tsakataras at 655-2252 or Tina Ganiaris at 764-2183.
The Emmanuel Dining Room is located in the Old Asbury Church at 3rd and Walnut Streets. We sponsor and serve
the luncheon meal on the 12th of every month from noon until 1 p.m.
We would love to have you join us...
Have a nice summer!
Young @ Heart News The Young@Heart will have its last meeting of the year on Thursday, June 11, in the AHEPA Room, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with reception. The main event of the meeting will be election for officers for next year. Everyone is requested to attend for this important function. Christina Sanford moved on to the Metropolis Level St. John
Chrysostom Oratorical Festival where she won “Honorable Mention”.
We congratulate her for a job well done.
Prayer is one of the most fundamental aspects of
Christianity. There are many virtues with which it has
a reciprocal relationship- it both needs and creates
faith, hope, love, gratitude, repentance, and humility.
Today we will explore the last of these, humility. What
is true humility? How can we, living in this prideful
world acquire it, and lastly, but certainly not least, how
does it apply to our daily prayers?
Respectfully submitted by Christina Sanford
True humility, C.S. Lewis says in The Screwtape
Letters, is not trying to make yourself believe you are
not talented when you know you are. Similarly, in
his book Beginning to Pray, Archbishop Anthony
Bloom says that humility is not a “ sheepish way of
trying to imagine that we are the worst of all.” He
continues, “Humility is the situation of the earth.
The earth is always there, always taken for granted, never remembered, always trodden on by
everyone, somewhere we cast and pour out all refuse. … silent and rich….making out of all the
refuse new richness in spite of corruption.” Thus, true humility is not saying that you do not
have talents that you do, or that you are the worst person ever. It is love as defined by 1st
Corinthians 13; there can be no love for all mankind where there is no humility. We cannot
truly love our neighbor if we believe ourselves to be better than he is. Humility is accepting that
we, in and of ourselves, are poor. Everything- life, material possessions, the ability to think and
feel, even humility itself, comes from God out of His love for us. All of it can be taken in
seconds by an earthquake like the one which so recently devastated Haiti or by a tiny blood
vessel in the brain bursting. It is when we feel this, when we realize our complete dependence
on God, that we are truly humble. True humility, then, is the ability to be taken for granted by
men and knowing that we are completely dependent on God for everything.
To cultivate humility we must realize who we are in the grand scheme of things. To realize this
we must have faith in and love for God. When we posses faith and love for Him we will realize
that “ all good things come from above,” and that in and of ourselves we have and are nothing.
When we have love for God we will see His likeness in all people, and when we see His image in
all people we will be humbled towards them.
Humility is necessary in all aspects of the Christian life, but particularly in prayer. We, who would
not exist except for God’s love cannot approach him with anything else but humility. When we go to
God with humility we begin to find the door to the Kingdom of Heaven says Archbishop Anthony
Bloom in Beginning to Pray. It is only when we know we are nothing that we start to pray, and
only when we start to pray that we find that the Kingdom of God truly is within us. Humility is
always important in prayer, but it is even more so when we are confessing our sins and asking
forgiveness, because, as we learn in the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, God will only
forgive us if we really want, and believe that we need, His forgiveness.
Humility is very important in every facet of the Christian life. Without it we cannot realize the glory
of God’s Kingdom, or truly love our neighbor. Though it may not seem fruitful on earth, if we are
humble we will be richly rewarded by God, for as Christ Himself said in Matthew 23:12 “whosoever
exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.”

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS
Happy Spring! We are nearing the end of the year and our schedules are as full as
ever. Our May Board and General Meetings were held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010
where we discussed our Church’s Nameday, the Metropolitan’s visit, the Festival
(baking and selling) and our End of the Year Luncheon. The Festival baking took
place in May. The karithopita was made on May 11th, the koulourakia on May 18th and
the almond cookies on May 19th. I would like to thank all the ladies for their hard
work and Mr. Lempesis for his help. Our Church’s nameday was celebrated on
Monday, May 24th and we welcomed our Metropolitan Evangelos who came to
celebrate with us. I wanted to thank the ladies who served the delicious meal provided
by Tom & Dimitra Lempesis and the Parish Council, and Sophia Psaltis, Loula
Kapordelis and Susie Kelleher for helping me prepare the St. Agape room.
June is as busy as May with the Festival. Our Philoptochos ladies will be manning
both the pastry booths, inside and out. If you would like to volunteer your time, there
is a schedule in the Church office. Call Susie and she will be happy to put your name
on it. Our last event of the year is our luncheon. If you look in this bulletin, you will
find a flyer with all the information. Just don’t forget to tell Soula Tsakiris your
luncheon choice.

Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas
The importance of the “Belonging”
This year, twelve young people of our Community
graduated from the High School. As far as I know, all of
them will begin their journey towards their adulthood and
their carrier as students of an institution. We wish you all
GOOD LUCK from the bottom of our heart, because we
love you, because you are our continuity and the future of
our communities.
All these young people may be graduates of the
Greek School, or the Sunday School, or both. They may
be members of the dancing group, or GOYA or both.
Some of them served the priest of the community as his
helpers in the Altar of the Church. Let us not forget that
their parents were their necessary transportation and the
power that was giving them the financial means to learn
dancing or attend the school.
The complaints of the parents and their children
ranged from lack of time to the inappropriateness of the
space and the teaching personnel, and the common
complaint, “me again what happened to the rest of us”.
Complaining is easy and it usually expresses the problem
of that moment. However, I think it is time to ask
ourselves if all this effort was worth the effort, whether our
children have retained anything that will follow them for
the rest of their life.
Directly or indirectly our children, even by
osmosis, were baptized in the water (ideals) of Hellenism
and Orthodoxy, our language, history, mythology and our
morals and customs. Without realizing it they took with
them the over 4,000 years of written history of the
Hellenic nation. They took with them the importance of
working and collaborating with the “other” for a common
cause. They learned that for the Greeks is very important
to be with their children at all social functions, to share the
same food and to dance together. Knowledge is never lost.
They will always remember the Greek language they
learned once, the Epitaphios procession on every Great
Friday and the Lord’s Resurrection every Holy Saturday,
in midnight. They also learned that a manifestation of the
Greek way of life is that an intense disagreement about
something at noon does not mean that we cannot have a
pleasant dinner the same day.
Our children learned that “they belong” to a group
of glorious past, with parents, friends and relatives who
care about their progress. They are proud because they
belong somewhere, whose preservation will work
tomorrow. They are not “Tabula Rasa”, but they have solid
background for the rest of their life. They are not leaving
home only to be absorbed by the society but they can teach
it instead. If they need help they know that it is in our
communities! It is up to them to seek for it!
