Ridgeland Ave. Palos Heights The Voice - H ΦΩNH Why we venerate icons Official Monthly Community Publication of St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 12307 S. Ridgeland Avenue Palos Heights, IL 60463 Last month, we began a new series of articles whose theme was ‘Catechism 101’. The first topic was the symbolism of candles and why we light them at church. In this month’s issue we will examine another practice whose significance is often overlooked: The veneration of icons. Every time we enter an Orthodox church, before we even light our candles, we make the sign of the cross and venerate the icons in the narthex. Furthermore, we venerate the icons in our home and we teach our children to do the same. To those not familiar with Orthodoxy, lighting candles is somewhat understood, but kissing icons seems very strange, or even idolatrous. Therefore, we have the responsibility to be able to explain the significance of venerating icons as it is so prevalent within our faith tradition. REV. FR. Athletics “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” 2 The Voice First of all, icons are not idols. We do not venerate the wood or the paint. We venerate the icon of Christ as an act of confession that the Son of God became incarnate. God took on material form, and therefore He can be represented in material form. The Word of God became man and consequently He can be depicted as a man. When someone denies the freedom to form a representation of Christ on a piece of wood, stone, metal, or any medium, it is equivalent to denying that the incarnation of God ever happened. The incarnate Lord, according to the Apostle Paul is the foremost Icon of God. When we venerate the icon of Christ, this expression of devotion is not given to the icon as a material object but as a material expression of the prototype which is the Incarnate Word. Of course, we often venerate icons which do not depict Christ but depict the Virgin Mary and the saints. All human beings, even though we are marked by sin, we never lose the image of God within us. We are all icons of our Creator. That is why, for example, the priest censes all the faithful after censing the icons, because we are icons of God. Those who have attained holiness in this life are even more clearly icons of God having also achieved the likeness, which was lost at the Fall of Adam. This holiness, however, and the restoration to the likeness of God, is made possible by the incarnation of Christ. What it means to attain holiness is to allow Christ to be your prototype. As Christians we are called to no longer live for ourselves but to have Christ living in us. It is noticeable that all the icons of saints look alike. While maintaining some physical characteristics pertaining to their gender, age, and occupation, the prototype for the face of every saint is the face of Christ. Therefore, the veneration of the icon of a saint is connected to the veneration of Christ Who is the source of their holiness. Giving honor and showing devotion to the Panagia or the saints is to give honor to their prototype, to the Christ whom they served and worshiped throughout their life. Likewise, we venerate other material expressions which point to sanctification of all nature through the incarnation of Christ. We venerate the Gospel book, the cross, relics, or even the right hand of the priest, be- cause they are material objects that point to the source of holiness that fills them. The veneration is not to the object but to Jesus Who sanctified all creation by His incarnation. We are all made in the image of God and by His incarnation all humanity has been sanctified. If we treat objects made of wood and metal with such veneration, if we kiss them with love and devotion, if we handle them with respect and awe, how much more are we to venerate one another. The honor we pay to holy images should pale in comparison to the honor we pay to one another, the living icons of God Who created us in His image. When we venerate and kiss the feet of Christ on an icon or show honor by our devotion to the saints, let us remember to honor and venerate the image of God in every person, even the least of our brethren among us. Amen. Then our class made their own crosses that you can see displayed in the window of our classroom. Parents, grandparents and children alike are all having fun at Cherubs. Please join us if you and your young children are available on Tuesday mornings for our playgroup. Janine (Georgiopoulos) Riley Cherubs Advisor P.T.A. We had a great first day of school with children and parents attending an Agiasmo and then they painted a pot in which the students later planted their vasiliko. On Sept. 27th we had our 9th Annual Open House where the students came in the evening with their parents to show off their classroom and all the “big work” they have been working on these past few weeks. We were very excited that Evan and Peter brought in some of their plants that they had planted during summer camp and last spring’s science class. Evan’s sunflower grew over 7 feet tall and both students brought in potatoes that they had cultivated all summer. Thank you to both boys for sharing with the class. One of the traditions that we are very proud of are our field trips. We are excited about our first field trip of the year which will be to The Children’s Farm. This trip is part of our unit on the community and its many helpers. The Farm is a real working farm and pumpkin patch. The children will be able to hold, touch and learn about a variety of animals, as well as go on a hay rack ride and pick their own pumpkin. Archangels Academy continues to excel in the field of early childhood education and in our continued effort to stay competitive the field we have incorporated tablets into our classroom.
