After almost a year on the job, I
can’t say that sentiment has changed at all. Just the opposite: I am constantly
amazed at the wealth of potential when it comes to relations - people-topeople, economic, cultural, academic - between Canada and Italy.
On the trade front, we’ve signed a historic agreement-in-principle with the
European Union: the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
Bilateral trade between Canada and Italy is already flourishing, in fact, Italy is
one of Canada’s leading trading partners in the EU. Once CETA comes into
force, these essential economic ties will be further solidified and strengthened,
to the benefit of both of our countries.
There is so much to celebrate when it comes to the Canada-Italy relationship.
And you - Canadians who have made Italy your home and friends of Canada
here in Italy - are at the heart of it all. So thank you, and a very Happy Canada
Day to you all.

Chers Canadiens et amis du Canada,
La dernière fois que je me suis adressé à vous date du mois d’octobre, à
l’occasion de l’Action de Grâce du Canada. Je venais de revenir en Italie en
tant qu’Ambassadeur du Canada (ayant été dans le passé Consul Général
à Milan) et j’exprimais ma reconnaissance d’avoir l’opportunité de travailler
à nouveau ici pour renforcer les déjà étroites relations qui existent entre le
Canada et l’Italie.
Après presque un an de travail, mes sentiments n’ont point changé, au
contraire! Je suis constamment stupéfait de la richesse du potentiel des
relations interpersonnelles, économiques, culturelles et académiques entre le
Canada et l’Italie.
Sur le plan commercial, nous avons signé un accord de principe historique
avec l’Union Européenne: L’Accord économique et commercial global
(AECG). Le commerce bilatéral entre le Canada et l’Italie est déjà florissant et
en effet l’Italie est l’un des partenaires clés au sein de l’UE. Dès que l’AECG
sera en vigueur, ces liens économiques fondamentaux seront d’autant plus
consolidés et renforcés au bénéfice de nos deux pays.
Il y a beaucoup de chose à fêter lorsque l’on parle des relations entre le
Canada et l’Italie et vous, Canadiens qui avez choisi l’Italie et amis du Canada
en Italie, en êtes partie intégrante. Un grand merci alors et Joyeuse Fête du
Canada à vous tous.
Et pour ceux d’entre vous qui désirent vivre un peu de Canada en Italie, ne
manquez pas de visiter le Pavillon du Canada à la Biennale d’architecture

workout below is designed to
SHOCK your metabolism! Shaking
up your workout routine with
different training times, different
exercise sequences and different
tempos is what will give you
accelerated fat loss results.
I have put together a full body
workout that targets your abs,
particularly those lovely obliques
(love handles). Working these will
definitely tighten and tone up your
waistline.
The Workout breakdown:
12 mins, 4 exercises/ repeat 3
times.
An intermediate workout but you
can add some intensity if you are
advanced by skipping a 2 minute
round before and after the final set
or running on a treadmill if you are
at your gym.
50 seconds of work/ 10 seconds
of rest
1. Diagonal/ center plank jumps
with burpee Jumping Jack
(In plank position on hands jump
center/both diagonals then a
jumping jack upwards)
2. Dumbbell chest press with lower
and upper ab crunch
(Lie on your back, as you do a chest
press, raise your legs upwards and
then crunch upper body up, then
lower legs down and repeat. If you
don’t have dumbbells, use bottles
of water/ bags of sugar)

(Lie on your side and move your

Birth and Death
Registrations
Overseas
British
nationals
living
in
Italy should note that as of
Monday 9th June, the Foreign
& Commonwealth Office is
changing the way that it registers
the births and deaths of British
citizens overseas.
The process will gradually be
withdrawn from British Consulate
in Rome during the rest of 2014.
Thereafter this option for British
residents will be carried out by a
central registration unit in the UK.
Consular
birth
registration
is an optional service and is
only available to those born
overseas who have an automatic
entitlement to British Nationality
at birth.
There is no legal requirement
for a consular birth registration,
and a local birth certificate with a
certified translation if necessary
should be sufficient for all
purposes in the UK including
applying for a passport.
Similarly there is no requirement
for a consular death certificate
– a local certificate should be
sufficient for winding up the
affairs and obtaining probate in
the UK.
The
processing
time
for
registrations will remain the
same
but
applicants
will
need to allow extra time for
documents to be sent to and
from the UK. British nationals
can find information online on
how to apply for a consular
birth (gov.uk/register-a-birth) or
death (gov.uk/register-a-death)
registration.
Centralisation of birth and death
registration into a single-purpose
unit in the UK will allow the FCO
to provide a common online
application procedure with a
credit card payment facility,
which will be more efficient and
convenient for customers.
Centralisation will also enable
FCO consular staff to better
focus to their primary function
of assisting British nationals in
distress.

•340 grams cake-and-pastry flour
•1.25 grams salt
•5 eggs, separated
•1 Pinch cream of tartar
•340 grams granulated sugar
•3.75 grams finely grated orange rind
•80 mL orange juice
Filling and Decoration:
•2 kilos of strawberries
•680 grams whipping cream
•57 grams icing sugar
•5 mL vanilla
Method
Sponge Cake: Sift together flour
and salt. Return to sifter and set
aside. In large bowl, beat egg
whites until foamy: sprinkle with
cream of tartar and beat until soft
peaks form. Gradually add half
of the sugar, beating until stiff,
glossy peaks form.
In large bowl, beat egg yolks and
remaining sugar until thickened;
stir in orange rind and juice. Fold
into egg whites. Sift flour, a third
at a time, over egg mixture, gently
folding in each addition.
Transfer to ungreased 3.5 L cake
pan and bake in 180°C oven for
20 to 25 minutes or until spongy
to a light touch. Let cool in pan
for 10 minutes; turn out onto
wire rack to cool completely. If
possible, wrap and store for 1
day. (Cake can be frozen for up
to 2 months.)
Filling and Decoration: Hull and
slice about one-quarter of the
strawberries. Whip cream; stir in
icing sugar and vanilla.
With long serrated knife, cut
cake horizontally in half. Set 1
layer, cut side up, on serving
tray. Spread with about one-third
of the whipped cream mixture;
cover with single layer of sliced
strawberries. Set top layer, cut
side down, over berries. Spread
remaining cream over top and
sides.
Cut remaining berries in half and
arrange in overlapping rows,
cut side down, forming 2 side
bands and a maple leaf in centre.
Arrange remaining berries as
garnish around sides of cake.
