TORINO
JAZZ FESTIVAL
This year the festival offers an authentic globalized jazz trip. The event has
received the patronage of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO
for the 30th April which is dedicated to jazz. The festival for this event,
which constitutes the main Italian date, hosts South African, Cameroon,
Norwegian, American, Israeli, Lebanese, Brazilian, Canadian, Argentine and
French artists together with a wide range of artists from the Mediterranean
world, in a variety of styles that shows the profound change in the
conception of jazz : it is no longer just that of the glorious Afro-American
tradition, but nowadays embraces the most diverse styles.
The festival promotes three original productions: Diane Schuur with the
Torino Jazz Orchestra, Mauro Ottolini who set the music to Buster Keaton’
masterpiece The seven chances and Stefano Battaglia in a reinterpretation
of the composer Alec Wilder’s opera. New collaborations are beginning
with the institutions (Il jazz della Liberazione), the usual openness to other
artistic languages (cinema, arts, literature), the glamorization of the rich
artistic and productive fabric of the city. The 9 o’clock free concerts in the
setting of Piazza Castello, will host the stars: Al Di Meola with a tribute to the
Beatles, Manu Dibango, Enzo Avitabile and Bottari di Portico and Caetano
Veloso. At the Carignano Theatre, the icing on the cake (it has to be said):
birthday wishes to Gianluigi Trovesi: special guests Gianni Coscia and
Umberto Eco. Among the concerts with admission fee several proposals
stand out: Uri Caine/Dave Douglas, Kenny Barron /Dave Holland, ending
with Louis Moholo for focus on South Africa.
The collaboration with the Conservatory Giuseppe Verdi and the Juilliard
School of Music continues for the master-classes. Obviously the rich
billboard does not end here: there will be many TJF Fringe night concerts
with extraordinary guests such as Jon Balke and Javier Girotto, concerts
by the Jazz Club Torino in Piazzale Valdo Fusi and so much more.
May Day with the traditional non-stop jazz Festival in Piazza Castello:
Taranta Nera, Giornale di Bordo, the Paolo Fresu Quintet which celebrates
thirty years of activity, Ibrahim Maalouf, the fusion music with Alain Caron
and a great closing performance by Elio e le Storie Tese.

FRINGE
This year also, the TJF FRINGE will unleash its sparkling jazz notes
in the clubs, the streets and the squares of the city for five long nights
from 26th to 30th April 2014.
The 2014 edition will be inspired by John Coltrane’s masterpiece: A
Love Supreme which this year celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of
its publication, a work that has influenced musicians of all genres.
Experimental music, the pulsating soul of FRINGE , will infect more than
200 artists involved in 70 concerts of a program that promises to be
varied thanks to the mix of Italian and international musicians, such
as the drummer Roberto Gatto, the saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, the
Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, the Argentine saxophonist and drummer
Javier Girotto and Minino Garay.
There are numerous special events typical of FRINGE such as the
unmissable appointment, starting at 11.00 pm, with the solo on the river
Po, “l’urlo dei Murazzi “ which symbolically gives the green light to the night
concerts and will be followed, a novelty for this edition, by the performance
on the Night Towers, a temporary structure in Piazza Vittorio, that will
host musicians for a unique show of notes dropping “from above” which
will involve the whole square in a whirlwind of music and dancing.
Among the improvised projects on the borders between jazz, world,
electronic, rock music and dance, the second edition of Fringe in the Box
is confirmed, by Ugo “Hugo” Basile and Francesco “Pisti” Pistoi, a musical
experiment which involves the live sampling of musicians and electronic
processing by a pool of international DJs and producers . A true festival
within a festival, the TJF FRINGE, which will heat the banks of the River
Po, the premises of Via Vittorio and Via Po with performances and
special events.
THE TJF
STREETCAR
Like New Orleans, the first capital of jazz Turin also has a Streetcar
named desire. An extraordinary vehicle, wandering throughout the
city during the days of the festival, which takes jazz to places that are
perhaps unusual. What a surprise to see the Lippa Jazz Band emerge
from a car that at each stop magically becomes a stage, bringing energy
and a good mood to those doing their shopping, returning from work or
school ... fun for everyone.
In partnership with GTT, the Association of the Tranvieri (streetcars) and
the City, the Association Torinese Historical Trams and Moncalieri Jazz
Il JAZZ DELLA LIBERAZIONE
(THE JAZZ OF THE LIBERATION DAY)
FRIDAY 25TH APRIL
The concurrence of the Turin Jazz Festival beginning on
Liberation Day is the result of a deliberate choice.
An illegal musical status under the Fascist regime, after April 25th
Jazz became synonymous with freedom.
Starting from the theme of Liberation a historical and musical course
leading the audience into a 40s and swing music atmosphere has been
organised, accompanying it to the two appointments in Piazza Castello
with which the festival officially opens.
Readings, spaced out with the music of a big band, exhibitions, guided
tours, film screenings and so much more animate a packed schedule,
wanted to celebrate Liberation Day and an historic page of Italian jazz
and not only.
The whole day is accompanied by the screening of a video to the tune
of In the Mood by Glenn Miller which narrates the Resistance and the
Liberation of Turin through images.
Beginning at 3:30 pm at the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza (Museum of
the Resistance), in Corso Valdocco 4/A.
In collaboration with:
Museo Diffuso della Resistenza, della Deportazione, della Guerra, dei
Diritti e della Libertà (Museum of the Resistance, Deportation, War,
Rights and Freedom)
Istoreto - Piedmont Institute for the History of the Resistance and
contemporary society “ Giorgio Agosti “
National Cinema Museum in Turin
ANCR - National Resistance Film Archive
And with the support of:
Regional Council of Piemonte – Committee of Resistance and Constitution
Provincial Council of Turin - Committee of Resistance, the Constitution,
