collane, ma nessuna di tali edizioni ne ha preso in
considerazione l’ampio
testimoniale, spesso caratterizzato da complessi fenomeni di rimaneggiamento e contaminazione. La presente
edizione critica è per la prima volta basata
sull’escussione delle principali testimonianze manoscritte, alcune delle quali sono state
riscoperte o rivalutate solo in tempi recentissimi: ne risultano la soluzione di varie cruces, il restauro di passi finora ritenuti soddisfacenti ma in realtà problematici per il senso, e più in generale la rivalutazione di un
grande autore del nostro Medioevo.
In less than sixty years (1946-2004) the most
prominent 14th century short story collection after
the Decameron has been published seven times
in prestigious series, but none of these editions
have taken into consideration evidence from the
extensive manuscript tradition, often characterised by complex re-workings and contamination.
For the first time the present critical edition is
based on the examination of the major manuscript witnesses, some of which have been rediscovered or re-evaluated only very recently. The result is the solution to various cruces, the restoration of passages considered acceptable until now
– but in reality problematic in terms of meaning
– and, more generally, the re-evaluation of a
great author of our Middle Ages.

The title Les aventures des Bruns indicates an
Old French compilation, with sporadic Italianisms, which various elements suggest may be attributable to Rustichello da Pisa. The text is
characterised by a rich tradition that sometimes
blends with Rustichello’s other chivalric work,
the Arthurian Compilation. Various manuscript
cycles open, in fact, with Les Aventures des
Bruns, to the extent that, for centuries, the readers of Guiron le Courtois began their reading
precisely from this material. This publication
inaugurates the series of editions in progress edited by the «Gruppo Guiron».

In this study, the author analyses the Provençal
canzoniere U in its ecdotic, linguistic, and physical aspects, considered in terms of their strong,
mutual interrelations so as to better highlight the
broadly cultural value of the witness. In an attempt to situate its particular place in the larger
context of production in the langue d’oc, this
research helps us recognise in the manuscript not
only an important piece in the panorama of ancient Italian reception of Provençal lyric, but also
a stimulating point of view from which to investigate complex problematics that involve broader
areas of the troubadour tradition.
The Abbey of San Michele della Chiusa was
founded just before the year 1000 A.D. on the
summit of a mountain at the end of the Valle di
Susa, one of the great transalpine roads of communication in the Middle Ages. For its origins
and location it became an important European
meeting point between cultures on both sides of
the Alps and one of the bastions of ecclesiastical
reform in the age of Gregory the Great. The literary works written there between the 11th and
12th centuries and now collected in this new critical edition, are proof of this: the history of the
founding, at the centre of an ideal axis between
the two great sanctuaries of the Archangel
Michael in Normandy and on Mount Gargano;
the legend of the hermit founder; the lives of two
of the early abbots. The appendix includes a selection of Clusine liturgical texts.

election of Pope Francis, and much more. Many rites and symbols described here were elaborated in the Middle Ages and in Early modern times. Many
of them are still used today. But other ancient rites and symbols have been abandoned in recent years, and the articles in this book examine just as much
the reasons for abandoning them as those for retaining them.

This study on the boy bishop’s feast in
western Europe deals with a subject that
has been hitherto neglected by medievalists. It is situated between different fields of
research: the study of rituals and festive
culture, the history of pre-modern theatre
and liturgy as well as the history of childhood. The book tackles this subject from a
geographical and temporal macro-perspective, covering iconographical and textual documents belonging to 150 different
institutions (cathedrals, cloisters, schools)
from the 11th to the 16th century. In contrast to a rather misleading perspective of
scholars who regarded the feast as an element of the culture of laughter and indirectly associating it with carnival, this study
shows the boy bishop’s feast as a liturgical
feast that was closely linked with the cult
of the Holy Innocents and Saint Nicholas.
Thus the book provides new insights into
the late medieval culture of piety as well as
religious ritual and concretises the inherent logic of liturgical festivals, which gradually became enhanced and transformed
outside the liturgy. The book also contributes to the history of childhood by
looking at the role and function of children in medieval clerical communities.
There the boy bishop’s feast not only was
an occasion for joy and play, it also prepared the children for their roles in later
life and helped the hole community to rememorize the salvation story as well as
universal Christian virtues – like inno-

qui analyse l’explication du mouvement

ton de l’ensemble. Bien que soit privilégiée la
voix des médecins, entre XIIe et XVe siècle,
elle n’est pas seule à se faire entendre et elle
ne se restreint pas au simple jeu des quatre
humeurs. Elle entre en résonance avec les
propos de philosophes, d’astrologues ou d’alchimistes et répercute autant les attentes
propres aux sociétés médiévales et à leurs
composantes culturelles que des interrogations qui ont traversé les siècles depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours. Comment rendre
compte de l’animation du corps et des interférences entre le somatique et le psychologique? Quelles parts accorder aux données
physiologiques, à la morale, aux influences du
milieu extérieur dans le bon fonctionnement
du corps ou ses dérèglements et dans les
comportements humains? Quel regard le
médecin porte-t-il sur les limites de son art et

La Navigatio sancti Brendani, anonima opera irlandese che conobbe larghissima fortuna in

ha lungamente lavorato Giovanni Orlandi (1938-2007). Il presente volume propone, con
minimi aggiornamenti, la traduzione e il commento che egli già aveva allestito mentre procedeva alla ricostruzione testuale. Il testo critico qui presentato è elaborato a partire dalle
ricerche da lui condotte ed è accompagnato da un’introduzione letteraria e filologica.
The anonymous Irish work, Navigatio sancti Brendani, which enjoyed fabulous popularity throughout Europe, is one of the most extraordinary medieval narratives. The author takes his readers
on a journey rich in marvels and encounters with characters suspended between the earthly and the
hereafter, a journey both monastic pilgrimage and rapturous exploration of creation.The edition of the text, transmitted by an extensive and complex
manuscript tradition, was prepared over a long period of time by Giovanni Orlandi (1938-2007). The present volume offers the translation and commentary that he had already prepared while continuing work on the textual reconstruction.The critical edition presented here is expanded from his research, conducted and is accompanied by a literary and philological introduction.

The traditional name Appendix Probi refers
to a group of grammatical excerpta that appear
only in Ms. Lat. 1 at the National Library in
Naples, most likely transcribed at Bobbio at the
end of the 7th century from a copy of the Instituta artium by pseudo-Probus. The premise of
this new edition is a re-reading of the
profoundly damaged manuscript, which has
proved more complete than that done by previous editors, thanks to the use of a new equipment for examination of palimpsests at the National Library in Naples. A CD-ROM containing a reproduction of the manuscript accompanies the edition.

MIRABILE is the portal providing access to the extensive databases, the journals and the miscellanea produced by
the Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino (www.sismelfirenze.it), the Fondazione Ezio Franceschini
(www.fefonlus.it) and, since the beginning of 2012, significant databases from other organizations and research institutes. In addition to Medieval Latin culture (Medieval Latin Database), MIRABILE has now expanded to include
medieval vernacular culture (Romance Database, French Database) and a specific section devoted to hagiographic
texts and manuscripts (Hagiographic Database).
This new content, coupled with the reorganization and implementation of various search filters, has increased research
possibilities and accessibility of results. The high cross-referencing between databases increases considerably the possibility of accessing relevant information on authors, manuscripts, and texts. All the contents are available in an integrated format such that online access is even more profitable, opening possibilities for multidisciplinary research.
At the moment, MIRABILE contains information on approximately 108,000 manuscripts, 17,800 authors, and
340,000 bibliographic records; in addition, 1,600 journal articles and 1,080 miscellany volumes essays in PDF
format are available.

Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale.
ROME. Collection of Medieval Sermons

The project aims to organise a catalogue of medieval homilaries: these are homogenous collections of sermons and
texts on the art of preaching which, for the most part, circulated anonymously in manuscript form. Initially, 15 collections for a total of almost 1,370 sermons by approximately 45
authors will be available for consultation in Mirabile.
TETRA. Mediaeval Latin Texts
and their Transmission

The project aims to provide a census of the transmission of
Medieval Latin works similar to that for ancient Latin authors in the now classic Texts and Transmission, edited by L.
D. Reynolds. Therefore, for each individual work: the manuscripts in which it was preserved; the first printed editions,
other editions, citations and reuse; attestations of its circulation in different period and places.
TRAMP. Manuscript Tradition
of the Church Fathers

The project objective is to build a database of Latin Patristic
manuscripts, with entries on authors and texts (anonymous
and pseudo-attributions) dating within the 5th century and
manuscripts dating within the 15th century.
LIO. Repertory of Italian Lyric Poetry from Origins to Dante
Analytical records of approximately 180 authors and 4,000
liric compositions, complete with philological bibliography

MAFRA. French Manuscripts in Italy
The database catalogues 131 manuscripts (99 with French

of Medieval Lombardy

TeCoLM is a digital archive containing the descriptions of
all the manuscripts of the vernacular literacy from Lombard
region, from 13th to 15th century. It collects the membra disiecta of the vernacular works of authors from Lombard region
in a single database, furnishing clear information about codicological, palaeographical and linguistic features.

of the Romance Lyric Tradition from Its
Origins

TraLiRO is a catalogue devoted to the manuscript tradition
of medieval lyric texts from the Romance language areas.
The aim of the research tool is to sketch a concise, detailed
picture of the manuscript tradition of the various authors
belonging to the first phase of lyric production in each of
