No clinical signs. Virological tests were negative. In the farm were kept 1650 pigs. According to the SVD national program the animal were destined to slaughterhouse and meat was handled according to EU legislation (national market only, special mark). The animals were sent to the slaughterhouse by channeling procedure and a time program for slaughtering was scheduled by competent authority. At the end of that program (22/04/2014) a pig of the last lot (4 pigs) showed a clinical sign (presence of vesicles on the mouth) On 24.04.2014 the National reference laboratory confirmed the primary outbreak. SVD outbreaks 2014 The secondary outbreak was confirmed (by serological test + epidemiological connection with the confirmed outbreak) on 30.04.2014 in a fattening farm cod. 059PZ753 with 686 pigs, that introduced pigs from breeding farm 096PZ030 (the two farms involved belong to the same owner). All 690 pigs have been killed and destroyed and cleaning and disinfection in both outbreaks were carried out. Control measures adopted In the Province involved: SVD Outbreaks and restriction zones: Measures established in Council Directive 92/119/EEC and Commission Directive 2007/10/CE are applied Movement standstill also in the remaining part of the Province. SVD free status of Potenza province has been withdrawn (Commission Decision 2005/779/CE). All the farms of the Potenza province have to be serologically tested, 2 times, 28 – 40 days apart (P: 5%, I.C: 95%) to regain the status of a Region free from MVS. Results All lots moved from the breeding farm cod. 096PZ030 (the origin of infection) have been traced and submitted to serological tests. Most of them were directed towards the fattening farm cod. 059PZ753 of the same owner (secondary outbreak). Few lots were destined to back-yard farms. No further secondary SVD outbreaks were detected. Conclusion To date, a possible hypothesis for the introduction of infection in the farm 096PZ030 is the contamination of truck during animal trade. In particular, the same vehicle was used both for the transportation of animals to fattening farm 059PZ753 and for the delivery of pigs to back-yard farms. Moreover the owner used a product not appropriate for the disinfection of vehicles with regard the SVD virus. Surveillance activities are ongoing and all 2,079 tests carried out by the veterinary services at the moment in the farms located in the Potenza province are negative. Thank you for attention
