The story of ZAFFERANO has its beginnings in
2001 from the long experience of Federico de
Majo, businessman and designer, who has worked
in the family business on the island of Murano, in
the field of blown and artistic glass since the Seventies.
ZAFFERANO stems from Federico de Majo’s profound awareness of the secrets of glass shaping and
experience in the creation of objects of design that
will result in multifarious collections of wine-tasting
glasses, art glasses, tableware accessories, lighting
fixtures and decorative accessories.
The company aims at offering both the private and
hospitality environments a complete range of products, in order to provide the table and the interior
decoration with a strong aesthetic style.
Specifically selected materials, researched and innovative technical shapes - such as the patented collection Esperienze - reveal a strong focus on design
and product research.
Federico de Majo
ZAFFERANO nasce nel 2001 da un’idea di Federico de Majo, la cui storia ha inizio nella vetreria muranese di famiglia. È qui che a metà degli
anni Settanta, inizia a dedicarsi con passione al
vetro soffiato ed artistico. Partendo così da una
profonda conoscenza dei segreti della lavorazione del vetro, l’imprenditore e designer, dà
vita a collezioni di calici da degustazione, bicchieri
artistici, accessori per la tavola, lampade e complementi. L’obiettivo dichiarato è di offrire una
proposta completa rivolta tanto agli ambienti privati quanto alle strutture destinate all’accoglienza
e all’ospitalità, per conferire all’arredo della tavola
e degli interni una forte connotazione estetica.

Bon Bon Collection
La collezione BON BON e’ completamente eseguita a “mano volante”, una tecnica
antica e sofisticata, ogni pezzo e’ lavorato senza l’ausilio di attrezzature meccaniche,
i sottili bordi vengono rimessi a caldo e con magici movimenti rotatori attraverso la
forza centrifuga dilatati e portati alle dimensioni desiderate.
Le inclusioni, i riporti e le basi dei nostri oggetti sono ottenute tramite l’unione di vetri
incandescenti che si amalgamo insieme indissolubilmente.
Ogni gesto diventa irripetibile, la quantità del vetro attinta per le inclusioni e per le
altri parte applicate a caldo non può essere dosata perfettamente dalla, pur esperta,
mano dell’uomo; le forme stesse, sempre simili, godono di quella unicità, data dalla
lavorazione, che rende ogni nostro prodotto, non riproducibile esattamente.
Per questo, piccole difformità sono da ritenersi un vero, autentico pregio, testimoni
delle caratteristiche di eccellenza artigianale della nostra produzione.
Ogni oggetto porta inciso sul fondo il nostro marchio di garanzia a testimonianza
della sua originalità.
The BON BON collection is exclusively made using the “mano volante,” or flying hand,
an ancient and sophisticated glass-making technique. Each piece is worked without the
help of any mechanical equipment; the thin edges are re-heated and expanded to the
dimensions desired by centrifugal force applied by the skilled glass-blower. The handles and
bases are applied while the glass is in a molten state, each union unique and unrepeatable.
Even the most expert hand cannot precisely measure the quantity of glass used for the
applied parts; thus every finished object, though of similar shape, has a uniqueness granted
by the glass artist that renders each piece singular and unreproducible.
For these reasons, any small flaw should be considered an authentic mark of value that
evidences the unique craftsmanship of our products.
The bottom of each object is engraved with our guarantee trademark to certify the
originality of our products.

“Parlare dell’ideazione e della lavorazione di questi bicchieri
è forse per me il piacere più grande. Ho cercato un’idea che
non ripetesse la consuetudine solo formalmente piacevole di
tanti calici già esistenti. Mi venne così, seduto alla scrivania di
una stanza del Morgan’s, che sta sulla Madison. Fuori pioveva,
una miriade di cerchi concentrici vibrava nello specchio delle
pozzanghere: un pensiero concreto, immediato, realizzato”.

“To talk about the conception and rafting of these glasses –
Esperienze – gives me great pleasure. I looked for an idea that
did not follow the behavior of being merely pleasant to the
eye, which is the case with so many existing wine glasses. The
idea came to me while I was sitting at the table in a charming
room at Morgan’s, Madison Avenue. It was raining outside, a
myriad of concentric rings vibrated in the mirrors created by
the puddles; a concrete, immediate, fulfilled idea”.

Sono esperienze uniche quelle che si assaporano grazie a questi calici dalla estesa
superficie di contatto e dalla particolare ondulazione alla base del bevante. L’ampiezza
della superficie, aumentata dalle ondulazioni, favorisce la centrifugazione, l’ossigenazione,
ed il percorso evolutivo del vino, che dall’ambiente ridotto della bottiglia, in cui è rimasto
a lungo, si porta verso una condizione di perfetta bevibilità. Queste stesse ondulazioni
consentono di osservare le tonalità e i riflessi del vino senza dover inclinare il calice.
La collezione Esperienze, il cui brevetto è depositato, è disegnata da Federico de Majo,
realizzata in vetro sonoro superiore e disponibile in due versioni: soffiata a bocca e con
esecuzione meccanica. Per le specifiche tecniche, oltre che estetiche, i calici Esperienze
sono un apprezzato strumento per la degustazione, frequentemente selezionati per
valorizzare le eccellenze della produzione enologica internazionale e per accompagnare
prestigiose manifestazioni enogastronomiche tra le quali Vinitaly a Verona.

It is a unique set of experiences that the taster enjoys when drinking from these glasses, with
their generous surface area and rippled bowl.The surface area in contact with wine is increased
by the ripples, allowing the taster to swirl, oxygenate and develop the wine to best advantage
once freed from the restrictions imposed by the bottle, bringing it to a condition ideal for
drinking. And these same ripples show up the hues and reflections in the liquid without having
to tilt the glass.
The Esperienze collection (patent pending) is designed by Federico de Majo and crafted in
crystal glass and available in two version: mouth blow and machine-made. Esperienze winetasting glasses are an appropriate tasting stemware appreciated by wine professionals and
connoisseurs. Designed to enhance the finest distinctive characteristics of each wine they

Pensavamo che non si potesse fare nulla di innovativo nel campo della degustazione e del servizio del vino.
Ma l’attenzione alle forme che è stata messa in questa collezione, la maniacale assoluta ricerca della
leggerezza rendono questi calici l’eccellenza assoluta.
Le forme sono studiate per ciascun vino, mentre il comune denominatore di questi calici superleggeri è
dato da questo finale a labbro che rende più confortevole l’approccio con il liquido.
Così, vino bianco, rosso, grandi rossi, gli aromatici, i distillati, gli spumanti e champagne si consumano con
la solita piacevolezza ma con in più la sorprendente agilità del calice che rende la degustazione unica nel
suo genere.
Probabilmente i calici da degustazione più leggeri mai prodotti, sono frutto della matita di Federico de
Majo, che ancora una volta, dimostra la sua coinvolgente passione ed abilità nella ricerca del bello.

We actually thought we couldn’t do anything else that was innovative in the field of wine-tasting and
serving, and yet the meticulous attention applied to the shapes in this collection, and the virtually maniacal
search for lightness have endowed these excellent glasses with an exceptional quality.
The shapes have been studied for each wine while the common denominating factor of these ultralight
glasses consists in the rim which provides a smoother approach to the liquid.
As such, white wine, red wine, important reds, aromatic and distilled wines, spumanti and champagne can
all be enjoyed with the usual delight but with the added element of the surprising ‘agility’ of the glass which
makes the tasting such a unique experience.
Probably the lightest glasses for tasting ever made, these have been designed by Federico de Majo who
once again has shown his extraordinary passion and skill in searching to create something simply beautiful.

Starting from the innovative undulating ripple at the bottom of the bowl of the glass, it came
as a natural consequence, after the artisan craftsmanship carried out completely by hand, to
move on to the industrialization of these tasting glasses.
It would have been a loss to leave the pleasure of seeing great wines come back to life after
the customary hibernation in the bottle only to a restricted elite group of enthusiasts.
Hence the Nuove Esperienze (New Experiences) collection, produced with the aid of the latest
model of blow-moulding machine at a reasonable cost, gives the opportunity to all those who
